Ok so I'm new to pvp. Flame on if you must.
Quite simply I am looking for what is considered the standard rules of engagement in a 1v1, in high sec, when the fight is initiated by dropping a can outside a station, naming it 1v1, and someone taking the opportunity to teach me a lesson about pvp.
I guess more specifically, is it normally a no holds barred, all out, dog fight to the death? Do you blow up their ship? Do you attempt to sieze fire if you have cut into their hull and/or the person has clearly lost the fight? When I lose should I worry about being podded or in duels like this are pods an un-ethical target?
I've read a lot of forums about where to go for pvp training, universities, RvB, etc. etc. etc. But I looked at this as a way to squeeze in a fight or two to get my feet wet while I run missions to build up my wallet so I can support a vacation to RvB or FW or something. So I wanted to be prepared and understand the rules of engagement as they are typically unwritten in such situations.
Thanks Orewell

Edited by: Seith Silverstein on 02/07/2010 14:19:30 As far as rules go, I'd just stick to No-Holds-Barred whenever you take from someone's can. Additionally, if you're in High-Sec, even if you take from their can they are not allowed to kill your Pod without Concord intervention. That doesn't mean they won't (though they probably won't), it just means they'll lose their ship for doing it (and a huge amount of their sec status depending on the security of the system you're in).
Remember, though, that if you take from someone's "1v1" can you are aggroed to them *and their corp* for 15 minutes. This means that he can kill you 1v1, then you dock up to get your mission ship and his corp comes and blows you up on the station. Always beware the ****s, we'll they'll take every opportunity to get easy kills.

Yeah I'm aware of the 15 minute timer, I have plans to generally run some missions and then before I log off try to get a 1v1 to close the night out. I'll never forget reading in a guide "Eve isn't meant to SEEM like a cold hostile universe, Eve is meant to BE a cold hostile universe" or something to that effect. I treat pretty much everyone (unless I know them personally) as if their only objective is to blow my ship to bits I just know that in "many" situations such as 1v1's there are usually unwritten rules that MOST people abide by. And that if I go out to duel in anything more then a cheap T1 frig, if I should expect to lose it to every person that looks my way.
I know "don't fly something you can't afford to lose" which I have several copies of the ships I plan to fly, I can afford to lose them, just wanted to know what to expect to some extent, going boom is less scary if you already know it's coming, then if you don't expect it

Edited by: Skex Relbore on 02/07/2010 14:44:41 Unfortunately in a game where lying stealing and betrayal are the order of the day 1v1s are regularly dishonored.
The only way I'd 1v1 someone not in RVB and have any expectation that it would really be a 1v1 would be to invite them to fleet and go to a safe to fight that way you know they aren't getting any gang bonuses from an off grid booster and one of their corp mates can't warp in on you without at least the warning of them dropping fleet.
Another way to limit the chances of getting screwed a little is to have them take your can. Which won't protect you from them using RR but will at least keep their corp mates from being able to kill you directly.
That said as long as you are following rule ONE of EVE and you aren't risking much in the way of a ship then if it gets dishonored you're out a rifter or what ever so take the agro and have fun.

It's no holds barred but if you're loosing and you can get away do so. Also all sorts of people don't care about being rather loose on how they define 1v1. As in it could be one Corp vs one player or one guy with a bunch of Remote repair, etc. -Jin Nib Trading on behalf of Opera Noir since: 2009.03.02 03:53:00

Can-baiting outside stations in highsec has no rules.
Or better yet, they have the rules defined by the can-dropper and will usually change the further down in hull the can owner are, as he realize you're going to pop him.
Most highsec "1vs1" kids will go to vast lenghts in order to come out on top of a fight.
With kids I mean n00bs and with n00bs I mean newbies scared ****less of the thrill that it is having your best internet spaceship going down in flames.
tl;dr: If you want a serious shot at a clean 1vs1, get it with someone that is cool with having it at a safespot while being in your fleet.

I would stay away from those cans in highsec. It's been a while since I have been in highsec but the stories I have heard are usually not ~ honorable ~
However, In my neck of the woods, The only 1v1 rule is that it is only your ship vs his, anything else goes. Podding after the fight, running if given the opportunity aren't against the rules per se, but more dependent on the attitude of the people fighting. I have had good success with 1v1s historically, Id say in lowsec for me 90%+ are honored, you do get the occasional pathetic little **** who can't handle a loss but all in all its not too bad.
And ffs yes, FIGHT TO THE DEATH! -------------------------------------------------

My experience:
1)It's to the death unless otherwise specified
2)you do have to hold your target or they can and will warp off (Beware of people who want a "no warp off" rule. They will not fit a point and may just fit a mwd speed mods and long range weapons and snipe you at 70k while you sit there wondering why you agreed to a no warp off rule.)
3)I have never had an agreed 1v1 dishonored be it a low sec pirate or a high sec carebear wanting to try some pvp.
4) If its not an agreed 1v1 don't expect a 1v1. Don't think their silence is an implicit agreement to a 1v1.

PvP 1v1 Rules in Hi-sec: 1: Make sure you know what they have. 2: Make sure you know you can win. 3: Make sure you have 2-3 corpmates sitting on a planet aligned to you. 4: ?????? 5: Profit

PVP 1v1 Rules: 1) You don't talk about the PVP rules. 2) Attack in a manner they aren't expecting, at a time when they don't expect it, in numbers they cannot resist. 3) ...? 4) Profit

You'd be surprised to know how many ppl are outthere who will honour an 1 vs 1.
Thing is, there are no rules. But if you are the type who'd want figths, not kills, you will find them. It's that simple. With a bit of experience, your scumbag meter will go through the roof everytime you'll meet hyenous characters.

Once I get into a fight it's me or them. I always vote for me because I love me. Usually that means protecting me by killing them. Sometimes I also pod them to make me happy.

Edited by: Othran on 04/07/2010 23:09:12 I generally don't do them and that's my advice to anyone.
However if you are going to do one my advice is to do it with someone with much more experience than you. Reason = they're much less likely to have mates ready to come in and kill you as you're a "newb" to them. If they do call in help then they look like idiots.
Best advice is don't do arranged fights.
