Mixing gun types.
So I've been reading a lot about what kind of turrets to use for missioning ships. Examples:
Amarr - Tachyons vs. Pulses, Tachyons crush mid-long range baddies as long as they can track where pulses hit well and track good short-mid range.
Minmatar - Arty vs. Autocannons, Arty, like Tachs decimate mid-long range targets while AC's dominate short range but require an AB to reach the farther orbiting baddies.
Now here's the crazy part. Would it work to mix these two gun types? (ie Arty+AC and Tach+Pulse). So for example a mael with 4x Arty cannons and 4x AC's. Have the arty always blowing away mid-long range and AC always shooting smaller enemies. Or maybe 6x Arty and 2x AC. (2x AC seems to be a bit weak imo). Same would go for amarr by mixing Tachyons and AC's.
So what do you think? Just plain stupid, or so crazy that it might just work?

The word you are looking for is "sentrys".
Don't mix gun-types. Seriously. Go eighter (depending on ships speed and/or enemy faction - serpentis/Angel and artys don't go well for example!) and use drones/sentrys as compliment to help short and mid range.

Edited by: Kurfin on 03/07/2010 07:19:14 I'm assuming this is for missioning. Generally you want all your guns pointed at the same target. Taking down the enemies one at a time brings down the incoming dps faster than spreading your fire power over 2 of more ships (unless you have enough alpha to drop the 2 targets with only half your guns on each in one volley). Also in many missions the ships you are fighting won't be that spread out so you would probably find yourself with only half your guns being effective.
In short bad idea.

Haha ok thanks for clearing that up.
Looks like I'll scrap those Mael and Baddon fits lol
Jw, what would you suggest if you don't have enough drone band for a full squadron of sentries? Or what if you went the AC route and needed something to cover longer ranges?

As a rule it is never optimal to mix weapons... There are a few minor exceptions, notably with blasters (the range difference between Neutrons and Electrons is pretty minimal in a mobile ship so mixing Neutrons and Ions save fitting with a minimum of problems).
Mixing long and short ranged weapons however is only very situationally viable. I recall a trio of Paladins fitted with 3 Mega Pulse and a single Tachy (with which they could engage long range stealth bombers, Logistics ships...etc) each performing rather well during the 6th or 7th Alliance tournament.
In conclusion, avoid mixing weapon types unless there is no other way to achieve the result you're looking for. --

Mxing weapons is generally a bad idea if you got other options.
Like: Using drones for targets outside your guns "best range"
Minmatar got the "split weapons system" thingy that will get you to mix Guns and Missiles. But even there it es better to stay in one Rangecompartement to maximize dmg on one target. Because targets got tank, its faster to kille 8 targets one after another than to direct one gun at each target to kill them together ^^

Sometimes mixing missiles can do no harm. I.E. putting on 1 HM and 6 HAM on a Drake if you are short of implants. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I used to mix gun ranges. I also stopped doing it when I realized that not only did I have the (character) skills to no longer need to do so but also that it was much more efficient to base your ship around one specific range and add modules to complement it rather than trying to do everything at once.
Honestly, if you want to mix ranges you should consider mixing weapon types as well. Large ACs and artillery don't mix as well as large pulse lasers and artillery do, at least in terms of mutual ranges. Case in point, an apocalypse can hit out to 21km with MF crystals on pulse lasers while it hits out to 24km with EMP on 1200mm artillery guns. T2 ranged ammo will have a wider optimal range variance but will still yield better results than trying to mix 800mm ACs and 1200mm artillery.
I do not, however, recommend trying that except for the sake of entertainment value, yours or that of whomever blows your ship up.

Calling it stupid is too severe.
If you want to mix short and long range weapons, go ahead, I am not going to stop you. Then you will spend a hour on doing something that takes me 20-30 minutes.
The whole subject is about efficiency. If you do not care how long it takes, do it your way.

Personally i would use Arty's, and have a heap of light and medium drones for short range enemies, or 4 Ogres if i have Acs

At best, if you gotta mix, then mix the damage types if you are not sure about your target's resists.
I'll load all 4 missile types, mix load and watch the dps output. Then as the opportunity arises, I will reload with the higher dps warheads.
I think that should work for AC's as well. It's nice to be able to reload in 10 sec to a better ammo. ---
