Hi everyone!
I've been playing EVE for about a week now, really liking it, it's a lot more involved than I ever imagined. However, there's a pretty cheap trend I've been noticing. As I spend all my time in High Security space at the moment, I'm basically working on my skill set and building an income, I see a lot of very advanced players with highly advanced ships getting around baiting new players into combat.
You probably all know what I mean, but I'll give a couple of examples.
Leaving a cargo container in a high traffic area with some valuable loot inside. Anyone who takes it leaves themself wide open to attack and the attacker is usually lurking nearby.
Another was when I was working with a friend. I was mining and he was collecting the ore and selling it. As we were using a cargo canister to transfer the goods a Cruiser pulls into our vicinity and steals some of the ore. Then he immediately jettisons the ore. When you take it back, of course you're the one stealing now.
Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not condoning the theft of someone else's goods, but to bait a new player and then use your overwhelming strength against them to blow them to ****...well, isn't that just a little pathetic? Surely there's something more profitable you could be doing rather than ruining the game experience for someone starting out?

Edited by: Mal Lokrano on 06/07/2010 01:26:50 This is Eve, it is a harsh and cold place. People target the weak and take advantage of them. That is what makes Eve unique, its pressure on you to adapt and figure things out and become strong and experienced is not common in other games.
You will always have people who will try and kill you for no other reason than for giggles. For some its to pad their killboard stats, for others its to relieve boredom.

Edited by: Baka Lakadaka on 06/07/2010 01:56:48 While I don't condone baiting new players, it does provide some valuable lessons early on. If can-baiting occurs in any of the new player starter systems (i.e. where your character was 'born') then you should petition it as that's specifically banned. Once you move out of your starter system though, that protection is removed.
Recognising these tactics and being able to counter them, or at least minimise your losses is good training for your future in Eve.
I tend to be quite risk averse in high-sec. I tank my ships, I assume that someone will try to gank me, I assume that an ore thief or a ninja salvager is lurking nearby, I check every gate before sending a freighter through.
If someone steals, and I'm not prepared for it, I let them go - they didn't want the stuff, they wanted a fight. If I've got the necessary preparations in place though (e.g. my alt sitting nearby in a combat ship), I might just take the fight.
Treat it as a learning experience and you'll feel a lot better about it. Realising that the material losses are minor and learning to manage your risk is what it's all about.

Baiting is for the failed ones that cannot survive in low/null sec. Think of them as "special" pvpers. |

Actually I think the baiters are provding a valuable service. The sooner the new players are exposed to the cold harsh reality of the game the better they will be prepared when they naively arrive in low sec in their spiffy new expensive T2 frigate and get blown apart in 5 seconds flat. -----

I'm flying around lowsex right now in my brand new, spiffy and shiny Retribution that I named NoSex Ranger. So far I have been through 18-19 systems or so and haven't seen nary a soul. |

Watching ships explode (even my own) is all in good fun. Everyone gets popped when they first start playing and it toughens you up to the harsh realities of EVE. The sooner new players learn about the risks of jet cans and something about aggro mechanics the better off they'll be. EVE is not a place where you should ever be safe, only "safer".
OTOH, please do petition anyone flipping in rookie systems. That's the 3rd rail of can flipping IMO. Hey, once you leave the comfy confines of Todaki or wherever, it's Game On.
Seriously though, it can be fun to grow a pair and have a go at shooting the ebil piwates (or trap them). It's not that hard to do really (Battlebadgers are hysterical). The whole can flipping thing is actually more fun than you might imagine because you end up fighting other can flippers quite often, and the lengths that people will go to trap can flippers is really amusing. It's a sandbox, one person's fun is another person's griefing. Some folks like roaming the belts looking for trouble. Adapt, evolve, etc.
all the best, solomar |
