Guys,
Do we have an excact time, when this one starts?
I hear it starts after DT. On Facebook it sais 12.00 - nothing about 12 am or 12 pm.
There's no need for anyone to start before the bell.

prob after DT, but no clue exactly when. but rest assured, barges will be popped before the official start and well after the official ending.
if you're that worried, it's prob best to keep the mining ship docked for 10-14 days. if you're gonna participate, might as well start now and have some extra fun. and if you're a good miner, it prob doesn't matter at that much.
TL;DR prob after DT, not sure tho

It's not that I'm a miner, but I do alot of hauling in industrials. The word is that they gank not only Mining barges and exhumers, but also industrial ships, industrial command ships - like the orca -, freighters and transport ships.

I would imagine they'll primarily be targeting industrials in belts. People just hauling for level 4 missions will generally only be stations and gates which would open fire immediately on their ships. This will likely put off those paper thin destroyers or cruisers as gank ships as it will potentially decrease the chance of them getting a kill before the sentry guns get them, but you may still get BS gangs on gates and busy stations looking for easy targets. Combine this with the fact that if your not on autopilot your time at a gate will be short before you jump through or before you warp off and I think the increased risk will probably be fairly low.
If your autopiloting through empire then your chances of being popped will go up drastically.
I would expect some disco BS at some of the hubs used by haulers and miners over the coming week a bit though.

Interceptors are great for scouting belts and bookmarking them, but a shuttle works as well in a pinch.

10k EHP is what fail-fit Hulks have which get blown-up all the time. You want at least 20k for chance to survive.
This is the fit I use when I mine in hisec and w-space.
I use ECM drones. In hisec I either have the Orca kill rats with 5x Hobgoblin II, or if my alt is in a second Hulk I'll substitute 2x Hobgoblin II for a Vespa EC-600 drone. I first recall all the ECM drones so that the rats attack the Hulk and not the ECM drones (the rats will destroy the drones if they get jammed), and then send out the 2x Hobgoblin II to take out the rats.
In w-space I just use 5x Vespa EC-600 drones as there are no rats.
If I'm doing a level 4 mining mission, I'll use 5x Hammerhead II instead to take out all the cruisers and frigates.
When I use GSC (no hauler) I use 3x of them for 16,189.5 m3 (13,489.5 m3 without).
You can replace the rigs with shield extenders if you want a bit more buffer, but you better have a hauler on another account.

Nothing is invulnerable, but a Damage Control II has been a major factor in my survival. Overheating the hardeners after the first volley helps too. The ECM drones sometimes get lucky and prevent a second volley.
Being vigilant is probably the main reason I've survived: * watch local count for spikes (don't mine in systems with more people in local than belts) * watch local for gank reports * watch your directional scanner for incoming ships * when any non-mining ship lands in the belt, be suspicious, and prepared to warp out the moment you see a second.
Mining in missions is also helpful, as most gankers won't bother with scanning, and instead just patrol the belts.
I've had the same Hulks so long that even if I did lose them now, they have paid for themselves many times over.

- Put a DCU on of some sort. Barges can often survive because the attacker bases their ship on the minimum they think they need. Most people do not tank their barges. - Instead of putting 2 Strip miner IIs, can you fit three Is? That may get you more while risking less, not sure. - I have found gankers tend to be using a lot of thermal, so while EM is the 'hole' in the tank, plugging thermal tends to be more effective for me. - do NOT use any expanders - If you can fly ECM drones, they let you at least roll the dice once to get away. - If you want to live, you will have to rig for tank. It is up to you if it is worth it. - Stay aligned, and be ready to warp out at the first sign of trouble, not when you KNOW it is trouble - don't cluster with anyone. Neighbors mean bad times ahead - A fit I used in last 'geddon that survived 4 gank attempts and died in the 5th.

Medium F-S9 Regolith Shield Induction
Strip Miner I Strip Miner I
Medium Core Defence Field Extender I Medium Core Defence Field Extender I Medium Anti-Thermal Screen Reinforcer I
7400 EHP or so in EFT, but I have a couple of shield implants that add a couple hundred to that; also, the thermal rig is put on with antimatter in mind (seems to be the gank-ammo of choice)and you get a few hundred more against it. A typical barge has around 2,300 EHP, give or take, so you have more than tripled your EHP. You will have to do some hull repping, if you live Cool

I'm not sure you can really get much more than 34k ehp, with about 5000 shield hp, on a hulk even if you went all tank. A determined gank gang could still take you out.

No amount of EHPs will save you. Only working defense is being elsewhere. There are locations available for mining that will give you enough warning to move your hulk elsewhere before they get on top of you. -------- All I want is a better mankind.

In theory, yes, they can always bring more ships.
In practice, 1-2 ships can be survived depending on ship class, system security level, and your fit. More than that and you are toast.

Now, where is the fun in that? It IS just a game, so what if you lose a ship or two? Watching ships get 'corded is fun! I know they are probably out there, but I have rarely heard of gankers actually scanning the ships to see how well they are tanked. Wonder is you can fit a spider tank on a few hulks or covetors, or maybe have a nice Vulture in system boosting your tank? Maybe not, but still sounds fun to try .
Edit: Oh, and bring at least one combat drone so you get the kill!

Edited by: Julie Blue on 09/07/2010 20:48:34 Iam on the fence with this event, being a new player and trying to start out I can see the issue with Hulks and Ore ship in top high sec 1.0- 0.7 To me a player that has been in game for over 1 year and still mining in high needs his ship blown. All he is doing is making it harder for the new player to make some isk and move on. So on that blow em up :)
But.... Is Hulkageddon for real, what Iam asking is
1. Do the prizes get awarded to real players or are they alts / friends of friends ;) 2. If its all about getting hulks and macro's why do they count other ships. eg taken from the hulk site (http://www.hulkageddon3.machine9.net/) Exhumer 224 Capsule 32 Freighter 1 Industrial 3 Industrial Command Ship 3 Mining Barge 70

The problem is the decloak targeting delay. Alternatively, you have a safe spot out of sight a few thousand kilometers, and are aligned at full speed, and warp in at first sign of trouble. You can lock and boost pretty quick that way; however, the one time we actually tried it, no one attacked - the scimitar got there too quick and warned em off, or they weren't really attacking anyway, not sure.

If you bring enough people into a system to gank an Orca, and the pilot doesn't notice, then he deserves the gank.
I'm a miner myself and I have no sympathy for fail-fit losses nor AFK miners.
I was tempted to put together a search program to go through the killmails looking for any Hulk with 20k or more EHP. After quickly looking at 10 pages worth manually, I figured it would be a pointless exercise.

This. That's how how I learned to check a hulk with a ship scanner before trying to blow it up.

Thankfully IĈm floating in some quite little back water where i can still mine in peace
I also think ill rig a cheap stand in ship so i can mine without worrying about major losses if something were to happen.
(1)If you mine solo make a cheap stand in for you barge
(2)If your in a corp make sure you take a few corp mates with you when you mine or again make a cheap stand in for your barge
Tis all i can think of anyway
