HI All
IÆm new to the forums but IÆve been floating in and out of eve for quite a while (Not that i understand half of the games potential ).
IÆm am a Solo Miner and I am the proud owner of a Retriever Barge its a little rough around the edges but gets the job done. IÆve been working my way up to the Coveter Barge which should serve my needs nicely I think. But I will also be able to move it up a step to the mighty Exhumer Class, Is there any need for this as I mostly solo mine? I have a feeling that with all these options I am losing focus with my character.
IÆm basically looking advice on mining and tips you fine people might share with me.
Any character info (Bar my account password )can be provided on demand.
Thanks & Regards Normandy1

When you already are in a Retriever you¦ll skip the Covetor as you are only a few days away from a Hulk, which is the ultimate miners choice.
And as a miner you WILL want a Hulk, because of the amout of yield you get, because it¦s the only mining vessel you can fit a proper tank on, and because of the amout of ore you can hold before going back to station to unload.
Be aware that Hulkageddon III is in process now and your Retriever is a paper-thin vessel, easily killed by some catalyst. See the crime and punishment section for this and make your choice if you want to undock this week.
Hope that helps.

Hello and welcome to the mining profession
Once you get up to a covetor you have choice based on how much isk you have. The Covetor is cheap in contrast to the hulk but still does a good job if you dont mind jet can mining.
If you have the isk then go for a hulk, train exhumers up and have some fun, you do get some bonuses with the exhumer skill but its not absolutely massive. If you dont have the isk and you wont have it for a fair while then make sure you have Strip miner II skills trained before training the exhumer skill, this can make a big difference to your yield once you start using T2 crystals.
The hulk has a good tank for low (Never mine here) and null sec but its tank is its main advantage over the covetor, in Empire I personally dont think it makes much difference.
Hulks are good but only if you can afford them, they take a long while to pay themselves back unlike the covetor.
Thats my opinion anyway, with hulkaggedon on I wouldnt undock in a hulk, its expensive and cant be insured, the covetor on the other hand can be fully insured and only costs about 16m.
Also dont forget your refining skills for each ore, lvl 4 should surfice on the ores you mine most often not only does that allow you to get T2 crystals in your T2 strips but it gives you no waste in empire stations. Every little bit counts

Thanks mate i was not aware of this i thought the roid fields were very quite as of late, I'm glad you let me know . Ill aim for the Exhumer class then and see how i fair, I tend to use giant storage X8 at a time before shipping back with my itty mk4 i do things in bulk.
Once i have a hulk would there be any skills i could learn that would help me to be be a good addition to a corp? At some point i would like to help a larger force or even help the new guys an gals coming onto the mining scene
Thanks & Regards Normandy1

Do not, under any circumstance, let anyone know what your alt is. Just saying.

That depends on what kind of mining you do. The main advantage of Covetor is that it's fairly expendable so it is great for wormhole belts -- all you can mine arkonor (mercoxite in higher end belts), rats spawn only once (so tank does not matter), no local channel. Of course you will get ganked once awhile but the extra ISK you make should more than compensate for it in the long run.
Of course, if you are mining low end ore in a 0.8 high sec system then the hulk is definitely the best choice. Unless it's 'ulkageddon.

Skills for your Hulk will be Exhumer 4 (only Hardcore Miners go Exhumer 5) and Shield support skills for tanking your Hulk.
You will want Refining 5, Refinery Efficienc 3 and "Ore"Processing 3 for perfect refine in Highsec.
You might want to use Mining Drones to support your your yield so "Drones" 5 and "mining drone operation" 4 (5 if you want to use T2 mining drones), and to defence yourself against belt rats u might want to use Hobgoblins. Keep in mind that every skill from "Drone Interfacing" increases damage (from Hobos) by 20% and increases the yield of your mining drones as well for the same amount.
When searching for a corp to join, there are a lot of mining corps out there, 0.0 alliances are in search for miners as well the last days since the new upgrade system, and for special fun you can join a wormhole corp to mine high end ore, if you don¦t mind to spam directional scanner for every twenty seconds, and still lose your hulk once or twice in a while. You won¦t care as you will make billions every month.
Hope this helps.
Edit: Was¦nt sure about increase of yield from mining drones, had to look up.

Ha this sounds awsome mate. Puts a bit of fun and risk into it as well as being rewarding when it works out, I look forward to trying this.(Loseing ships is part of the game )

I¦ve been living in a WH for more than 3 months. Just a few facts to it:
You WILL have to defend the POS of your corp. Be aware that they might want you to be able to fly a cruiser/BC size ship for that purpose.
Logistic in WH-Space can be a nightmare. Be aware that you might not be able to export (selling) your goodies for quite a long time nor can import anything (ships/ammo).
Be aware that you MUST be able to use probe launchers and use them accordingly, there are a lot of skills to train. You WILL want to have a covops handy, enjoy skilling.
You WILL want to join corp raids against sleepers, when for some reason no grav sites spawn (so there is nothing to mine). Remote Rep Battlecruiser comes very handy there, again enjoy skilling.
Be aware that after some time living there, you won¦t be able to forget your directional scanner for years, as you will have to hit it every 20 sec watching out for combat probes, 3 times/minute, 180 times/hour and so on. You will learn a new meaning of the word "paranoia" (at least i did).
I¦m sure there is a lot i forgot. Have fun.

The hulk is the ultimate mining machine but just want to give a perspective on cost. Presuming non-Hulkageddon prices of 130M and 15M for the hulk and covetor, that is a 115M cost sink. Full throttle jetcan mining in hisec gives the hulk about 1M per hour yield differential over the covetor. Thus, you are sinking 115 hours before you break even although you "pay" for the hulk with only 12 hours. Not too bad for the mining enthusiast but eye opening for the casual miner.
I have to admit that I'm of the mindset - "cool, I can recoop my hulk purchase after only 12 hours".
Keep a covetor in reserve.
