How can you kill some little newbies ship in safe space and not feel remorse.
So I tried it. Fit out a catalyst, and killed a little 14 day old dessie mining just for the hell of it.
I have never felt so guilty in my time in EVE... (I even sent him 30 million isk about 10 minutes afterwords)
So, besides me being an empathetic wuss, seriously, how do you deal with the guilt? (maybe you feel less bad when its a year old character in a hulk...)

Do it on someone who isnt just getting over the trial period, preferably 3months+, tears of shame turn to tears of join.
also, i too would be happy by you podding yourself

The first one is the on that gets you the most, after that they are all a snap.
You have taught the new player a valuable lesson, that Eve is not %100 safe. He will remember it and be wary.
If I catch a new player I will be a bit more generous with them, ransom for less, give them a bit longer to decide, etc, but I will still get my desired result from them. Highsec you have to gank, no grace period. If you want to take a whirl at pvp try lowsec and see what happens :)

Know how you feel as I am a pathetic empathic as well. I once paid a WT 12 mil to compensate for his agreed 1vs1 T1 industrial loss. (Took forever so it kinda felt like torturing someone and when he asked me to let him live because he was low on isk and the pvp rigged hauler had been so costly for him I got weak hearted and promised him to compensate him for the loss >_<)
I agree with everything Barakkus posts. |

F1-F8 and never look back.
If you are on such a guilt trip, you can always donate money for the pirate victims charity that I am setting up.
PS. If you are wondering if I have any morality issues with what I do, its a simple answer, no. The moment you fly into lowsec you are fair game to me, if you don't want to lose your shinies, don't come to lowsec. -

Not a pirate here, but I think you need to take into account a few things:
You killed a beginning player with probably no clue as to game mechanics in highsec. Thats not standard pirate practice.
Most pirates I know of will leave these unworthy targets alone, unless they are sitting with their n00b ass in a way to expensive ship for their account age, and thus probably plexed their way there and should be tought a lesson in the first rule of eve: Do not fly what you can't afford to lose.
Everybody hopping into low-sec on the other hand .. meh .. read the darn warning message you get at the gate, if that isn't clear enough for them, then you just have to teach them. No guilt there at all.
On a side note, read up on the 'Why are you all so untrustworthy threat ... you might find a few good pointers there on why guilt should not be an issue.
(If the rookie insured that ship you killed, his loss is minimal, his lessons learned huge, and daim, this game is nog about being safe ANYWHERE, just safer!) ========================== Nothing is true, everything is permitted. ========================== |

I feel no more guilty shooting people in eve than I do shooting people in CS or capturing someones queen in chess, it's all part of the game. That said, if I'm completely dominating someone in any game I'll often go easier on them and/or give them pointers if they're making obvious mistakes. In eve this manifests itself as me convoing my target and telling them what they did wrong or giving them fitting advice. I never send isk, just because it's a bad standard to set and probably does more harm than good to the person who receives it. - - - Dian'h Might - C&Ps resident "internet kleptomaniac" |

I think it is helped by the fact that this happens to all of us; everyone, at some point, has lost a ship and/or a pod at an unexpected or inconvenient time and/or place (some of us, as few as, oh, 20 minutes ago).
If theyre in losec, they knew what they were agreeing to (or should have) when the popup message appeared when they clicked jump on the gate. It is a pvp area, in a pvp game...they might just get shot at.

*Sigh* Okay, I'll bite...
I deal with the guilt because there isn't any. It's a video game.
All jokes aside, people that assume that pirates in EVE are also anti-social, immoral people IRL make me . Especially when they compare blowing up an internet spaceship with, say, robbing someone, or murdering them, or destroying their car.
It's not the same thing!
If your EVE character is a pure reflection of the type of person you are IRL, then you take this game waaaaaaay too seriously.

I also don't feel guilty when I headshot someone while playing Counterstrike, when I rush someone in SC, or when someone lands on my Boardwalk with a hotel and four houses. --------------- Faction-Militia:Player-Alliance::Newbie-corp:Player-corp |

Edited by: Krecian on 18/07/2010 03:30:56 My first kill was a newbie ship who stole rat loot from me. I sic'd a light drone on him and watched it pop. I didn't have any sympathy for the guy. My feeling? He was warned by the same popup box I saw the first time I looked at somebody elses wreck. If he didn't have the sense to heed that warning when I'm SITTING RIGHT THERE, he deserved to get popped. Better it happened on a ship that gets replaced than something expensive later. Sent him a nice "Welcome to Eve" mail afterwords, explaining why he got popped, and offering further advice on the game if he desired. Guess he couldn't hack it, never saw him in game after that. --------- "The first rock thrown again, welcome to hell little saint.
