I turned my EVE account back on a few weeks ago, and I have experienced repeated freezing ever since. The game plays perfectly for up to an hour, then things start going crazy.
The first thing I notice is that time seems to speed up, causing the gentle rocking motion of my ship to change into a frenzied vibrating. This only lasts a short time, though, then I can no longer interact with the ship. Clicking and dragging on space does nothing, and eventually the ship model disappears entirely. Interestingly, some parts of the UI are often still functional (e.g. the market). Eventually the entire window freezes.
What's really weird is that the freeze often happens exactly 17 minutes after the hour. If I then restart EVE immediately, I can run for exactly another hour, within seconds. But it will always crash at 17 minutes past the next hour.
I have previously run EVE with no issues, though some change sets were less stable than others. I tried both updating my previous install to Tyrannis, and installing from the latest _m.exe, but the problem persists. I also tried the various graphical presets, and toggling off everything manually (including audio), but still it freezes.

I forgot to add something: this happens for me on every version of wine that I tried, from 1.0.1 to 1.2rc7, including crossover-games 8.2.0, 9.0.0, and 9.1.0beta1.

Could you check/pastebin your wine output when this happens, might help a bit

Here's the console output.
As you can see, not much going on until the alert system comes online, then the exceptions start.
I captured the exceptions using the LogServer, but I'm not sure what to do with the capture files...

I don't think it is wine or eve when there are timing effects happening as described.
Something else in your system should be the cause...maybe check your cronjobs or other time stuff and your system logs.
It could be network disconnects or update searches. My eve occasionally crashes when new system updates become available (Opensuse 11.2).

Good call, DoubleWhopper. I run ntpdate in cron.hourly, which is set for 17 minutes after the hour. I watched the network over wireshark, saw the ntp traffic, and immediately EVE went crazy.
So apparently EVE really doesn't like system clock changes.
I removed the cron job, and now EVE works perfectly. Thanks!

Eww, yeah, saw your post to late. I had the same effect a year ago and it was indeed the NTP deamon.

I've had that problem too. You can use ntpd though, it updates the time very slowly (and progressively) and EVE is okay with that. But yeah, you are obviously interested in my post because you're now reading my signature.

Yep, it's a weird Eve bug, been around forever. There was a time when the servers weren't NTP sync'd and had drifted too far off so everyone was getting randomly hit.

Posix, and I presume most OSes, require that the intervals of system timers be adjusted to accommodate date/time corrections.
The pitfall with this definition is that timers are usually never used for date-stamping but instead are use for metronomic ticks. This leads to the programmatic assumption of all the intervals being equally timed. They aren't.
Personally I feel this is wrong. If one wants to know the date/time then one should query it. But that's not how the API is so we have to use what's available.
Either one codes for date-stamping or one codes for fixed intervals. If the latter is chosen then one needs to ensure that that's actually what the OS is providing.
Of course, I don't know for sure this is the root of the problem but it certainly would be a good candidate.

So thats what that was, it happened so infrequently i never bothered chasing it.
It used to however destroy my local cache and id be crying about my contact folders and all my settings like overview. Later when they introduced saving overviews i made copious backups but it happened less and less, also less detrimental to the cache.
Nice to know.

Here's a trick you can do to re-create this: Change the clock on your computer while its still running. (e.g you can use 'ntpdate ntp.uio.no' if you ARENT in norway .. This will mess up your client.) Kill ntpd service, and set the time before you start eve :)

Ok let me first point out that vibration of the ship is not something supported by CCP. Also if eve client is crashing then something whacky is happening. Because I have never in my entire life seen a more stable and streamlined client for a mmo.
So the rarity of the client crashing is by itself cause for investigation into what your doing.
But when it crashes on linux of all systems that means you are ither a really ridiculous troll or you do not know how to use linux.

Facepalm.... Did you at any point stop what you were doing and just ponder why you are useing wine to play eve?
Had it ever occured to you that maybe using a tool like wine would jeee.. I don't know.. .Cause problems?
I mean I am no expert but when people use horrible software like wine the apps they try to run tend to crash..
So yeah this is a troll thread.
