There is no word that is heard more in these channels of debate, I think, than "freedom". Perhaps the ability to see forever makes people dream of it, and certainly all of we capsuleers remember, somewhere dim and distant, the twin shackles of mortality and gravity that held our ancestors in chains. Still, despite the common stars that we fly between, and the common words the translator gives us to share our thoughts, our meanings are as diverse as the minds that create them. Freedom, and its ugly sister slavery, have as many definitions as there are pilots in space; definitions often too different to reconcile.
Certainly among many of my fellow pilots of the Minmatar Militia, freedom is understood as meaning "not Amarrian". Among many of my former co-pilots of the Star Fraction, whose grand speeches claim to be rooted in the stuff, as though it were a sort of fertile earth in an Intaki rose garden, freedom means "not enslaved", be the slaves people or ideas or planets. Among the preachers of the Amarrian faith (if they will pardon the reduction from their eloquent sermons to my humble pen), it means, as best I can word it, "not damned"; as a blessed spirit is freed from the evils of the world with death. Among the politicians of the Gallente, it means "not Caldari"; among the Caldari, "not Gallente"; among the pirates of Amamake, "not full of Concord"; among the miners, "not full of pirates"; among our crews, "not on a spaceship tonight". I do not presume, with my little sermons, to prove one man's thought or disprove another's. I simply seek, as I always have, to add my own voice and the voice of mi raza, my people, to the clamor; and if someone finds in my words something that feels like truth or lies, it is of their own making.
It is my thought that freedom can never be defined by what it is not. My faith and my soul give me a simple, broad meaning of freedom: "the power to love". Thus, I am free, even though I cannot fly without persecution in Sarum Prime or Amarr, and cannot sell slaves in Unity station. I am free because I have the power to love; I fly, I pray, I laugh, I preach, and all are celebrations of that freedom. You, my deathless audience, small though you may be, share that power. You all have that power, an infinity of time in which to love, and an infinity of space in which to use it: but my sermon is not for you.
I write these words for those without that freedom, for those whose hearts cannot love or whose love is restrained by fear or weakness. I write these words for the Minmatar slave, whose soul burns with love for the distant horizons of Matar, but he will never read them. I write these words for the prisoners of revolutionaries, whose love of their God is silenced by their captors who fear its spread, as though faith were a plague, and they, too, will never read them. I write for the crewman on the gun decks, who holds against his heart a picture of the son he cannot embrace; for the laborers who breathe fumes in the fire-belching factories of our industry while their hearts cry out for a barely-remembered blue sky; for the senator from a poor world whose love for his people is swallowed by the power-plays of the great parties of the Federation. None of them will ever read my words, but this sermon is theirs as much as for any soul, and my prayers and my love are for them, as they are for all of you.
May God bless you all, and fly free.

Mm. Arguable, but well-said nevertheless.
Quote: My faith and my soul give me a simple, broad meaning of freedom: "the power to love".
Oh, gods and spirits, pilot.
At the risk of sounding like Nikilaiki Ruutarhara, you're so, so close, and then--
Love is ... deeply attractive, pilot. I doubt you'll find many who'll disagree, though they may sometimes differ on whether that is good or bad (it tends to be hard on arranged marriages). Most cultures hold love in deep regard, even awe. Even where viewed as disruptive, it is a force to be respected.
But it is a passion, and like any passion, it binds the soul. One who loves may sacrifice much freedom for its sake. One who wishes to be free will often shun love for this reason.
Love of family, love of country, love of a partner, love of one's self-- each form binds, demanding limitations upon action.
But then, so does anything worthwhile.

Great sermon.
May all the races of New Eden unite in harmony and understanding. Afterall, we are all the same deep inside, and we come from the same source.
We would all do well to remember this, and do our best to increase understanding and friendship.

Ricardo... you're a good man... you really are... and your words touched off on some fine points and made even finer questions regarding the age old questions; who are we? What do we do what we do? How do we go on about doing it.
Sadly, I have no real "cause" that drove me to join militia or do what I do... no... for me, the reason I joined militia was because I have random fits of rage and insanity and need SOMETHING to [legally] take it out on. Whether it be Amarr, Caldari, or an outlaw... I'll shoot them simply because I CAN. And when the deed is done, the voices in my ears silenced, and the hot rage that pulses within my brain cooled I will come here... because I will be normal again. _______________________

As sentient creatures with the gift of perception, it is in our nature to classify and define the universe around us to gain further aptitude of its contents. We establish foundations of understanding for concepts and theories that allow us to expand the thought process to greater depths of complex comprehension. The fundamentals of any society are built on core 'values' that lay the groundwork for expanding their people's comprehension of the world around them, and thus one can readily see how a notion of freedom can be interpreted so much differently by cultural subsets.
The great perversion of our time is the misplaced importance of 'freedom' by self-proclaimed righteous individuals, who champion this cause to commit countless atrocities against their fellow species. Our own subculture as capsule pilots are riddled with examples. We see the 'true' face of freedom in the outer territories, where pilots wage endless war and destruction against one another for power and control over one another. One is only as free as they are skilled in evading the roaming gangs of thugs searching for another hapless victim to subdue and dismantle. Many of us have endured the sour taste of CONCORD's freedom, where only those that fight against their enemies truly gain access to their territory and those that refuse to play by their rules are dejected as outcast criminals. Freedom has a price, and for some far greater than they ever expected to pay to live life on their own terms.
However, there are greater and far more noble concepts than freedom to live for. Like money, power, or fame, freedom is simply a variable in the great equation of life.
Regards, Nola

We all define freedom in our own way. In an ideal world, your freedom to act would end where another's begins. This applies to many aspects of life, not just love. Love taken to the extreme can be as tight a constraint as any binding that can be placed on the body, and can lead to the destruction of another's freedom just as assuredly as any drug or chain.
Anything taken to an extreme is dangerous. Even love in all it's many resplendent forms can be twisted into something horrid and repulsive through extremes.

A quick correction: The Amarr do not preach of Freedom. We preach of slavery at every level. I refer here not to the most blatant example of the various persons we enslave to teach them the Word so much as I do our overall philosophy of slavery.
A slave serves the will of their master. They have no free will, no purpose other than to serve with varying levels of flexibility in how exactly they accomplish this.
A regular citizen strives to be a slave to their local Holder. The Holder strives to be a slave to the King. The King strives to be a slave to God.
Though of course the actions taken by Amarrians are not always so pure, it is the ideal we uphold. Freedom is not seen as a virtue, but as a deviation from His will. * Jakiin Torash Holder Heir of the Kingdom Chief Diplomatic Officer

An interesting philosophy Jakiin. I agree that we are all servants of GodÆs Will. But what of Free Will. One must chose to be saved. I may not choose for you, you may not choose for me. Salvation forced is no salvation at all.
When you approach the Throne of God you alone will answer for your actions or inactions and be judged. If I am in error I seek corrections but so I was thought by the Brothers the Salvation Church of Blessed Servitude.
Ricardo Malfi your thoughts are well posed. I will consider what you have said. I bid you peace.

Our ideal is that we all follow the word of God without deviation. Free will does allow us to do wander from this path just as it allows a slave to drive a tool into his own skull: Does this make the slave free? Of course not. That we must freely come to the conclusion to no longer use our free will to act against His Will frees us no more. * Jakiin Torash Holder Heir of the Kingdom Chief Diplomatic Officer

I do not disagree with many, if any, of your points but I find your expression of faith in the Amarr as a loving people to be hilarious in the least. Look at the horrors of Vitoc sickness. Look at the blights caused upon many worlds by the Amarr and the machines which lengthen their lives. I wonder if something blacker than the malice of the Sansha powers those machines and they will cease their machinations once the ignorance of those who actually believe the Amarr wish to do any good.
If I could fly my ship into the face of your God and fire volley after volley I would. If I could destroy every single worshipper of that God, I would. Even then I would not be any worse than the lowest of the Slavers. Because, unlike you, I don't make my enemies my slaves. I give them fire and ice with the bark of autocannons and the ephemeral nebulae of torpedo blasts. I would rather be classed a murderer than a slaver. Your god and the dead emperor of the amarr disgust me.
Please, never pray for me or my kin.
Never pray for my crewmen or my pilots.
Never pray for my brothers or sisters in arms.
We don't want your love.
We'd rather endure the sin eater for a thousand millenia than share the sort of love which enslaves men. Your intentions may be pure but the word of your God enslaved my adopted brethren before we were breaths on our parents lips and will do so even after we are lost.
Do not pray for those without freedom to a God who wishes them in bondage. You are spitting in their faces.
Sleepers have more mercy than your God.

I am curious, though, as to why anyone would assume I pray to the god of the Amarr. Is space only large enough for one faith, and are all faiths slavers? Or do you respond to my respondents? If so, I pray you listen to my words, and failing in that, that you can come to accept that not all who pray are slavers, and not all who use the name of God wish you harm. I pray for you and your crew, tonight and all nights.

Heh,
Typical response. Instead of a slave to God youÆre a slave to the lies of your Elders.
There is only room for one faith. That faith is the faith of the individual to his god. A man may not have two masters. Whether you worship the God of Amarr, or money, or the paranoia of bitter escaped elder slaves, or a small pool of slime from Ashged II, your god is your god.
Being a woman of faith in the demon Vulkor, IÆm sure youÆd agree on the importance of faith and the individual..

The Faithful have been tasked by Him to save not your lives, which are fleeting, but your eternal souls. Thus the measures we must take also go up.
Admittedly, there have been errors in the past and committed now, but these will be weeded out. The Reclamation is far more important than lives.

No, not all of my words were directed at you Ricardo. Sometimes Vitriol consumes ones words so wholly that it is cast onto those undeserving.
I still believe that you have a deep misunderstanding of the Amarr faith. Perhaps, I am taking offense to your apology. I do not know. I am not normally one to become incensed and vent rage and vitriol on those undeserving.
Perhaps something got scrambled the last time I got podded. Maybe wormhole space screwed up something in my head. I did lose a ship to a Nightmare recently.
I leave you with this question: You say that you worship God who is your god? It is not Matari because the Matar worship many gods and their ancestors. It isn't the god of the Caldari for they don't have a god. Perhaps it is the use of the capital G god because those of the amarrian faith are the only real users of the capitalized singular god. I apologize for my confusion. I think I may need to see a clone doctor

Ms. Reiaandra Ilin. I am not sure what faith Mr. Ricardo Malfi espouses but I think he has stumbled upon a partial understanding.
The tenor of your first transmission concerned me for you. God is not Amarr. DonÆt judge God by the sins of those who espouse servitude to his will. DonÆt discard the message for the faults of the messenger.
I am Matar. We are all children of God. Find a Brother of the Salvation Church of Blessed Servitude or a member of the Salvation Crusade. They can help you separate the hate of Amarr from the love of God.

Actually I'm personally opposed to the implants and vitoc. But other than that, yes: Amarr is the true path.
Quote: Your faith is stagnant...arrogant...pathetic.
Stagnant? The Faith has adapted to better suit the carrying of His will over the millennia it has existed. A good indicator being that recently the Empress released more slaves than all of the Matari efforts combined.
Arrogant? We Amarr are humble, and know that we kneel before God and His wisdom. Unlike others who somehow believe that they have, in their flawed mortal ways, come across the universal moral code themselves.
Pathetic? The Faith which encompasses five hundred and thirty seven systems and tens of millions of believers abroad? Including your Republic? That which has brought revelation to billions? That which has devastated the greatest threat the Matari have ever been known to assemble? That which commands twice the number of ships as any other two navies combined? That which has stood longer than your civilization has existed? Believe us demons if you wish, such is your ignorance. But to think that such a power is pathetic is blinding yourself for the sake of spite and nothing more. * Jakiin Torash Holder Heir of the Kingdom Chief Diplomatic Officer

Yes because the master who fears that his slaves have gotten too powerful feeds them honey and frees them so that they may subjugate them in a different manner. If you worship their god then you are a traitor. They wanted to convert you because you are beneath them. You were a slave because you are lowly enough to be their property. Your kin continue to be destroyed in the name of this one true god.And this is a loss I know all too well, My home blighted and my family murdered but this was the failing of nature technology and man. You are blinded by some favor given to you because they wish for you to be blind to their true intentions.

You are a plague rat. You exist to spread the filth and damnation of the spirit that is the Amarr god. The Amarr wish that all the pride of Matari will one day fall down and kiss their feet as the messengers of God.
And if the empress does wish for you to be truly free, well, I assure you that the black tongues which flit amongst the dark hoods in those golden temples will insure that Empress Jamyl I meets a fate most unfortunate.
You are blinded by a gift. A great gift but would you accept a gift from a man who you know wishes to still subjugate you.
You are vermin, a virus, a pathogen.
The names of your Race's most powerful ships will enlighten you to the ways that have been true for the Matari for eons. May you find a way to sleep at night knowing that you are working to subjugate yourself again but this time, in a way that no freedom fighter will ever save you

Let us pray,
Almighty God, I beseech you this day to look down upon your child, Reiaandra Ilin.
Please let your light shine unto her, that she might find Faith.
Hear her words oh Lord as I have. See in them the same pain as I see and show her a path that will lead her to salvation and peace.
An it be your Will God of my father, God of my King, I ask that she be delivered out of the darkness from whence she came to a place of hope and sanctuary, family and love.
We are the Children of the Void and only Your Holy Light may guide us home.
And should she then forsake youÆre Your Light, let it be the light of my laser that burns her and sends her back into the night.
This I beg, ever your humble sword.
By Your Light and Your Will.

What I'm wondering is how an Achur is working up such an impressive head of steam over an isolated Ammatar. The Amarr hold an aggressive faith, and consequently are a danger, but gods and spirits, they're not that much of a threat.

We have good days and bad days. The vitriol just sort of snowballed. Though, I have to respectfully disagree with you Ms.Jenneth, Gods and spirits as you put it are the threat. The Amarr are a threat because of the god they worship. Without that god they would be far less persistent in their ways of subjugation.
Part of it is sympathy, part of it is having the paroxysms of the Amarr shouted in my face for far too long and another large part is having a vast hatred for any faith goes against our raison d'etre as humans and as pod pilots. The Amarr would be just as happy if we were still landbound and the Matari still primitive. I may be a bit too passionate but I see the Amarr faith threatening to our lives as pilots, as Caldari, as Achura and as Humans.
When they preach I feel as though they wish to block out the stars.

Originally by: Aria Jenneth What I'm wondering is how an Achur is working up such an impressive head of steam over an isolated Ammatar. The Amarr hold an aggressive faith, and consequently are a danger, but gods and spirits, they're not that much of a threat.
Pure sympathy for the Matari, is it? It's not like our stories are entirely different, but still ...
... this comes across ...
... loud.
Because Ms. Jenneth her head is fighting her heart. God is whispering and her soul is under conviction. Her anger is understandable. It happens for a time when false belief is replaced by truth. She says the Amarr are evil. But even as she curses them they pray for her. Master MokkÆs prayer being an example.
Forgive me for the sin of pride but as far as my faith being isolated, itÆs not. Even now the good news of Gods true will is being embraced in the Republic through the good work of the Salvation Crusade and despite efforts of the lost to stop it.

It never fails to amaze me how the truth of GodÆs Word is manifest.
Mr. Jan donÆt listen to the ranting of the booster crazed heretic Reiaandra Ilin. Borrowing Darth A30NZ words to you in another communication, ôWhat you must understand is that "if" you were freed by our Empress then her will is Gods and as such you are as free a man as your former masters.ö DonÆt be trapped by false lies Mr. Jan you were freer than Ilin when you were a slave, because her heart is closed and your faith is true.
While I usually leave politics to my betters it is my personal opinion that the Empire is eternal and all encompassing. As it has for the noble Khanid and the industrious Ni Kunni, if the Empire is to thrive, we as its stewards must make a place for freed Matar. So I life up my humble voice in support our glorious Empress in her wise policy of emancipation and embrace all free Matar of faith to take their place in the Empire as servants of God.

Crazed, perhaps. Heretic, most definitely. Boosters? not at all. Do you fear my words that much that you must discredit me as an addict? At least my attacks are not baseless insults. I'm sorry that your motives are completely transparent.

Transparent enough that you missed the point entirely. As far as baseless insults you are the Mistress of those. If you cannot find the will to humble your pride to Gods word then at least donÆt stand in the way of others. But what am I thinking, arguing with a stone.

You have a long way to go before my accusations become baseless. I will stand in the way of anyone who wishes to worship the god of the slavers just as you would obstruct my goals. I am a stone because I will not submit to the word of your God? Then you must be a vast boulder to not open your eyes to the voices of my Gods and our ancestors. And I would believe that you are heretical yourself. You deny the salvation of your God by accepting the immortality that this Jovian technology has given us.

Sometimes one says the most profound things - ignorance is bliss but short lived.
But all that is good seems short lived.
*she sniffles softly* Truth sets us free. And not all freedom is good.

Actually I'm personally opposed to the implants and vitoc. But other than that, yes: Amarr is the true path.
Well apparently, your illustrious empress doesn't share your feelings on the matter or she would outlaw them.

Stagnant? The Faith has adapted to better suit the carrying of His will over the millennia it has existed. A good indicator being that recently the Empress released more slaves than all of the Matari efforts combined.
"Adapted"...another way of saying it was been altered to better suit the Amarrian Theocratical need to maintain its power base. Your empress only released those slaves to popularize herself with the Ammatar and to aviod a war with the Matar Republic.
Originally by: Jakiin
Arrogant? We Amarr are humble, and know that we kneel before God and His wisdom. Unlike others who somehow believe that they have, in their flawed mortal ways, come across the universal moral code themselves.
Ah...a poorly vieled attempt to divert scrutiny. "Dont look at us...look at these people".
Originally by: Jakiin
The power of conquest and subjugation is in no way a testament of faith or relevance in the universe...grow up and crawl out from under the priest's robes altar boy.
