so i recently got this horrible malware program called "defense center" and i was miraculously able to get it off my computer without any serious damage (or so i hope). i was wondering, what is the best way to prevent programs like this from getting onto my computer anymore? an advice would be much appreciated.

Adblock Plus No Script
for Firefox or Chrome too.
lots of these fakeware things come in via ads, most common is a popup that tells you that you are infected. the second you click scan the bomb is dropped. some of these even go as far as blocking your internet access. only fix then is hoping it cant infect into safe mode and having things like the mentioned spybot on hand.

ctrl-alt-del then start task manager and kill the offending process. After that make sure to do a complete set of scans using several different anti malware and virus proggys.

I run Adaware all the time on my personal computer. I've never had any problems. Also be careful when you do download certain software because they try to sneak Norton or other programs that are hard to get rid of.

I'm not quoting a dev because i think its cool (even tho it is). I'm just quoting the truth. Anything else than Norton/McAfee/Trend Micro. Preferably none, if you can manage with common sense and some precaution, do it. Even spybot search & destroy displays in its 'Daily Hints' a warning message about McAfee and Trend Micro
