I was told that ecm drones can help you gtfo like an octapus spitting its ink at you. I haven't tested this as my corp and my computer are off line currently. I might test it against a player but i need to find a single ship to fight and not a gank squad. @ any rate, I need to know how they work and when i should use them. It looks like that the light ecm have a jamming rating of 5 so if i use 5 of them it should exceed the sensor streangth of all but the caldari bs or a prepared bs/bc. Is that about right. Let me know so i can make sure that i have some reasonable hope should i (once again) be sought after for "fair"(hahahah) combat.

ECM drones are mostly used in solo situations. yes its a great gtfo tool, but in engagements its useful as well. since each jamming cycle is 20 seconds, it means that every 20 seconds your target is jammed, even if for 1 cycle, thats 20 seconds they are not shooting back while you shooting at them. |

I was thinking that too. I could use them offensively as well. I'm not sure though how long they would last in the enemies hail of drone fire though.

Ecm drones are awesome in gangs. Its like having your own mini falcon in your drone bay and when the entire gang is spamming them you can literally beat gangs much larger than yours if you pick the correct targets to put the swarm on. This is especialy true when you go up against a gang with logi support.

if I have 50m drone bay, I always take 5 warrior IIs and 5 EC-300. warriors for frig defence and EC-300 for GTFO (saved me a LOT of times). If you are rolling with something like full shield gank Brutix/Harbinger/Thorax though 5xEC-600 could be pretty mean too.

Yup. I always pack 5 ecm in the harb as the disruption it causes with jamming out your targets support ships or dps ships is worth far more than the extra bit of dps a flight of hammers provide.

I never roll without ECM drones, except when im in a vaga.
For my Harb and Astarte, i use medium ecm drones. Depending on opponent ships, you can pretty much fight outnumbered.

Med ECM drones are a must! They tend to change the battlefield quickly. Most people do not expect them so if you have room you should use them. Smalls work but in reality take too long to cycle through. Mediums will save your Ass and definately **** off your opponent.

I find it funny when people say that ECM drones let them fight out numbered, when being outnumbered with the hostiles using ECM drones just means you are that much more screwed. ------------------------

Can I ask what skills are relative to ECM drones?
Are there skills that increase their strength such as the combat drones or is it simply about durablity and range control?

Edited by: Barrak on 26/07/2010 12:24:02 Thanks for the reply, I am sorry to say I don't understand it.
Am I correct in saying that the only things I can train for ECM drones are:
1. Durability 2. Range Control
I have just read through the skill desctiption on EVEMON but can not find an answer to my next question:
What is the default range of ECM drones? Does the skill 'Electronic Drone Interfacing' EXTEND an already existing range or does it simply increase range from 3000 by 3000 at each level?
Regards
Barrak
*EDIT* How do you work out your range control? I have logged into the game but can not see the drone 'range' anywhere. In this life (Eve) dying is easy, its living thats hard.

This is one of those situations in EVE that just makes no sense. EWDI extends drone control range for all drones by 3000m/lvl. It also allows access to various EWAR drones.
Note that this is the same bonus that Scout Drone Interfacing gives. If both are at 5 your drone control range will be 60km, ie 20 base + 5*5 for SDI + 5*3 for EWDI.

So..... let me just clarify this. The EWDI extends what I have ALREADY trained in the form of light scout drone range?
The skill in EVEMON (Not checked ingame) states very clearly scout 'COMBAT' drones. I am in no way doubting you here..... I am just very confused and want some clarification.

Base drone control bandwith (operational flying/shooting range upon targets, relative to drone-controlling ship (your ship)) is 20km. Scout Drone Operation adds +5km / skill level thus SDO lvl5 gives you 20+25=45km effective range a hostile ship can be in in order to launch your drones upon it. Electronic Warfare Drone Interfacing adds +3km / skill level to drone control range, furthering your possible attainable drone control range to 60km at lvl5.
You can then add drone control units (1 for 80km, 2 for 100km etc) to further your drones' operational range.
NOTE that however sentries are deployed right next to your ship and stay there if you do not move, they will not be able to shoot at targets outside of your drones' control range, even if that range is well within the sentry drones' optimal.
Basically what Zhilia and others are angry about is how the 'electronic warfare drone interfacing' doesn't actually give a bonus to EW drones but just increases your drone control range on ALL drones.
So even though you NEED EW drone interfacing to be able to use EW drones, you DON'T need to train it further than you require the range increase (IE lvl4 is what mine's on right now, giving me 57km range before drone link augmentor mods)
I hope that's clear enough for you. __________________________________________________

Heh. Not angry at all; in fact I'm thrilled. My Garde IIs are pretty much at optimal+falloff with three omnis at 60 so it's just about perfect.
The only odd thing is the fact that the same skill opens up various EWAR drones and extends control range. I'm certainly not advocating that CCP splits the skill; I'd just have to train more at that point (yay for maxed drone support skills). But it is odd.
So basically, you train EWDI to get that extra range and/or you train it to the level you need for the EWAR drone you want to use (which, for reference, would be 3 for either EC-600s or EC-900s or just 1 for EC-300s). The skill, however, has absolutely no effect on the, erm, effectiveness of said drones.

Yes, they are worth using. A neat trick is to use lights and if they miss a cycle recall them, then immediately launch them again, they will attempt another cycle instantly! Using this trick you can perma-jam most ships if you are orbiting in close for fast pick-up/launch.

His red square (aggression) will disappear, unless he has his drones on you ofc. If he has drones on you, no way of knowing wether you get a jam off or not except indeed by a lack of incoming damage/EW.
In case of usage as a GTFO tool simply align towards celestial, send teh ECM drones on the ship scramming/pointing you and continously spam warp untill you either warp off at the first successfull ECM cycle or die horribly in a fire. __________________________________________________

Just to help explain this part a little more:
<target> <------ range 1 ------> <your ship> <------ range 2 ----> <your drone>
To send your drone after the target both range 1 and range 2 need to be within your drone control range (so in fact your drone could be twice the drone control range away from the target).
As for the drone control range increases, some indeed say they are only for certain types of drones (for instance the ishtar bonus) but they all just increase your drone control range of the ship, so for any drone.. legacy texts ftw
All the above is prolly crap

I really hope they don't get nerfed
It allows small drone bay ships (e.g. caldari bs/bc) to use drones effectively without uber drone support skills (which are hard to justify training extensively when there's no caldari-only ship (rattler doesn't count!) that can field 4 (let alone 5) heavy drones). EVE Trivia EVE History

Well..... I am thinking of either a two 300's or one 600 for my sniping Caracal.
I sit at range and the only things that can get close are the Intys or the Rifters.
It's either the ecm to avoid point or some hobs to take them down enroute.
