Will Hilmar's Keynote presentation be available for viewing to the EVE Online community? Would like to see Hilmar get on stage and look cool! Also, the topic seems interesting! "Dare to be different" sounds off-ly similar to the ending of a cinematic for a particular game we all know and love!

They are daring to be different!
Instead of fixing and polishing current content like everyone else they are working only on new content.
See.
CCP dares to be different!
Boost pi production already!

I think we all pretty much know the grand vision.
Milk the cash cow that is EVE internet spaceship warefare game to develop new content such as sciFi Second Life and console first person shooter, then tie them into EVE trough some lame mechanism like farmville planets or walking around space stations.

It's advertising, and company presentation. Don't realy on it for meaning anything useful to players, or even trust the message. Think we've seen too much cut in pieces or cancelled or delivered badly or even too many attempts of "let's distract people with shiny stuff that barely works for the gameplay"..

Like it or not, the stated vision of eve is a sci-fi simulator. Walking in stations is a project that's been on the back burner for years, eventually you have to invest some serious developer hours to finish it, or it will just stagnate and become a wasted investment. Incarna also allows Eve to widely broaden its appeal (and subscriber base) while still keeping the niche game-play, which is an opportunity CCP can't pass up.
DUST 514 is a separate project, developed in China, that really has nothing to do with Eve development. The fact that they are managing to tie it in with Eve is just a bonus.
CCP has invested over a decade into their game, anyone who says that they just want to "milk the cash cow" are insane, anyone who watches the fanfest stuff can clearly see how passionate they are about Eve.

Eh, yeah, so that is why they picked up remnants of a UK game studio, opened office in Newcastle for Console development, released press releases a few months after gaming community sites announced it on their sites, and are still hiring various positions for Dust 514 development at the Newcastle office ...

Honestly I think ccp's largets problem is it's location. As a geologist I think Iceland is really kicken, and would love to go there, but living there is a problem for a lot of people. If you look at ccp's job page you will see they are looking for lots of developers to work on eve but the one problem is, it's in iceland. I know a few developers myself for some companies, but they have families. So they pass up the opprotunities to stay where they live now rather than relocate their families.
Anyone who has been a military brat knows how hard it can be at times. CCP would have no shortage of eve developers if they could get a full time EvE online developer office in the US or Europe that would work on the same things as the Iceland office.
But there inlies another problem communication and timezones, however with some investment in good cameras and bandwitdth it shouldnt be a problem.

Yeah, and it looks like they tapped the talent pool way too much in Iceland anyway, even if I guess that the Icelandic financial system collapse must have helped them in that regard.
When you look at it, in any other country Reykjavik would be a pretty small city, and you would not expect a hightech company in one, because most people working in hightech just don't consider living in such a place. It's due to various issues like finding a job for their SO, but in my experience mostly because people in hightech chose places where if they get dissatisfied with a job, they just have to cross the street to get a new one.
Reykjavik is anything but that kind of place.

Actually they are adding content that has nothing to do with the game were playing.
The could fix the game or they could add fun new stuff.
Instead they added significant do dads(PI) to serve as the basis of another game.
Wherever you went - Here you are.

My question now is this: basing it off my previous post.
CCP would/have you considered shifting resources to one of your other offices in attempt to hire more people? Or perhaps acquiring a small office say in texas and creating a new dev team out there. You are an international company and the possibilities are endless.
But as stated earlier, i think the big problem of what is holding you back is trying to have everyone go to iceland.
//CCP hawaii or CCP california would be great cause devs could cover US peak times and be able to still be around during Oceania afternoon and early evenings.
/// CCP Hawaii preferred as it has a volcano.

It hasn't happened yet.
IMHO, this presentation seems 10x more interesting to me: Dr. EyjoG: "Why, and how, does one manage an online virtual economy?"

It takes a special kind of arrogance to step up to an event like this, and tell other people what they should be doing, when player morale and game performance are at an all time low...

...good job Hilmar.
So in your world people who have been doing something for 13 years have no right to pass on any collective wisdom to their professional colleagues?
Player morale isn't low except for the 50 to 100 people that routinely post on the forum. talk about the vocal minority...

Again please keep this thread on topic!
We understand there is a growing minority of the EVE Online community that has grown disgruntled (evident by the 60 page thread-naught linked above); however, please keep posts relevant to the topic in this thread.
Thanks!

I just got the newsletter, vol. 45 in my mailbox which states - "Hilmar Petursson will present the topic 'Dare to Be Different' as the first keynote speech at CGDC 2010. The speech will include both the history of CCP and the never-revealed grand picture for CCPÆs future."
Anyone have a link yet? |
