Not going to happen, as every player lagging up a system costs $, and it would force a redesign of the entire economy.
I def can see a pay for skill points kind of system happening though, or pay for a shiny incarna avatar.

Actually, looking at much praised World of Tanks and translating its system to EVE. Pay RM to have skills train 50% or 100% faster for certain period of time (ideal you pay for entire months (in a F2P game)). Get superspecial ammo that can be bough only directly for RM that is several times better than normal stuff. Of course, direct conversion of RM to in game money, something EVE already has.
Generally if you want to play more than "casual, 2 hours a week" (2 hours a week really? what would that be, logging in every 2 or 3 days, checking skills and chatting a bit with corpmates, without ever actually undocking)... in a F2P you can end up spending much more than sub for P2P MMO would be. As F2P games have insane amounts of grind that you can greatly increase by micropaymets, and something that gives moderate to significant in game advantage.
Polished content =/= broken and unbalanced content. |

Thats what you are saying right? Then i accept the bet. -- please consider to visit our w-space system, cake will be served immediately. |

-increased exp point gain items--Buy SP in blocks of 50k or something -bag space--buy something that gives 1 pilot or pay more for all 3 pilots for a % increase to freighter/JF and transport/indy ships at a gargantuan sum of $$$ -mounts and pets-buy limited edition ships that are a tad better than what isnt bought in the CS -rare items like gear-- ccp can drastically change the ingame items in all aspects and simply make what it is now... the CS items. Not in name but in quality -cosmetic avatar clothes and skins- Incarna duhhhhhh -The ability to talk server wide.-- Stations will have broadcast beacons that will have a ticker on the top of the screen. Also, with that will come HUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGE BILLBOARDS out stations that are funded by Galactic Goldman Sachs. -content like quests, zones, and expansions.
EVE has nothing to monetize. Not without busting the game and PvP even more. And PvP is the most vulnerable thing to a cash shop change. No worries.

Will never happen ... until they modify how SP is gained, in which it will cause a catastrophe to the game universe. Part of the emotional appeal will be gone, you may get quantity but the whole UI/mechanics itself will deter the masses. To get quantity, you will have to compromise on depth in the long run. |

How long until CCP goes F2P with eve?.........
errr, no. & recent actions with PI proves it. why would ccp hand control of the production of yet more products to the players if thay any any sort of vision of going f2p? if they where gonna they'd be moving more items to a seeded basis so they'd have the control to be able to sell them to people for RL money.

I'd take that bet too. EVE is not going f2p.

Originally by: Siigari Kitawa F2P is a money grab. It would ultimately destroy Eve Online, much like it has destroyed, or is in the process of destroying, many other F2P games.
This.
Also, the successful F2Ps tend to have "Premium Content" - for subscribers. So the "free" parts of EVE might be: T1 frigates, cruisers and modules. Enough to allow someone to play the game for a few months, get hooked and then subscribe to get battlecruisers and T2 items (for example).
Do I think CCP will do this?: No.

The most logical way to make EVE "F2P" would be simply to charge for skillbooks as these are the only in game items that are not lost once purchased, therefore the game would be free to play but require constant injections of money to advance.
Incarna also has the potential to be a gold mine of micro-transactions, renting space, buying clothes and other silly aesthetic novelty items, etc. I would be most surprised if they did not release micro-transactions with Incarna, are they not already doing this with dust?
Just to be clear, I hate the whole idea of micro-transactions and do not support them in any way, if EVE does implement micro-transactions in any way shape or form, I will be leaving. |
