People were always talking about how mean this guy was who lived on our block. But I decided to go see for myself. I went to his door, but he said he wasn't the mean guy, the mean guy lived in that house over there. "No, you stupid idiot," I said, "that's my house."

To quote a phrase (sorry can't remember who said it):
If you want to see the worst of a MMO community, go to their forums.
When you think about it, it makes sense. Anyone who spends any real time on a games forum is either a meta-gaming forum ***** or someone who takes such little enjoyment from a game that they must post on a forum and ridicule anyone who does enjoy it.

Anyone paying attention will see that most of the hostilities on the forums are players against other players not against CCP. Sure there is some of that but mostly players treat each other like ****...

This.
Add anonymity and lack of accountability to the mix and you have yourself the Eve forums. It doesn't help that this game tends to attract some real bottom-of-the-barrel characters as well.
I'm playing another game at the moment and the difference between this forum and the other is like night and day. Mind you, the other game is buggy as hell, but everyone is so much more civilized and polite with each other. I almost had forgotten what it's like to socialize with mature adults. These forums, on the other hand, are usually about ruining other people's days and collecting "OMFG TEARZ HAHAHA!!!11"

Average age + testosterone + culture of entitlement + anonymity.
Under all that though the bottom line, as in all private moderated forums, is moderation. If CCP didn't want the forums to be just like this, they wouldn't be. Period. Gratuitous flaming, personal insults, flagrant homophobia; someone at CCP apparently think that's being "edgy" and "real".

The average age in EVE is over 30 I think, so the teenager hypothesis is out...
And really, People are ar$eholes on the forums because CCP encourages us to be ********s in-game..And who cares it makes EVE unique..
Cheating in fight agreements, Scamming, Station-griefing, gate-hub camping, market-undercutting,dog-eat-dog pvp and the simple fact in EVE of, "the one that aims to fight fair aims to fail" results in us becoming..Angry People..

I find moderation on these forums to be fine: I've had a couple posts of mine being deleted when I clearly did cross the line with gratuitous flaming and personal insults, and that was fair... but on the other hand I wouldn't like it if the moderation became over-zealous and create a general atmosphere of censorship and inhibition.
People will be people in online forums, in all their trash-talking infamy, and I'd rather see them freely speak their minds - as venomous and puerile as those may be - than seeing moderators actively deleting posts left and right, in a heavy handed attempt to bludgeon some sort of fake sense of harmony into these forums.
The trash talk and rampant whining can be easily ignored, on some occasions it may even be amusing, and it's never been to the point of drowning in its cesspool the good discussions that also take place on these forums.

I was thinking "under 25" not teenager but either way it's a huge mistake to assume that forum warriors directly reflect average eve players.

It's bad enough that many players cannot understand the distinction between in-game and out-of-game, far worse when the forums are intentionally geared to support that kind of childish viewpoint.

I lol hard when I read 'stick waving monkeys'.
I would have to agree with Professor Tarantula. Anonymity makes a setting where there is a lack of consequences. The lack of consequences is the real reason behind the trashy behavior.
We have all been on the road and had someone act like a huge moron. Even though we can see them, they have a almost no consequences for acting like a fool. Its not like we cant go buy an old pickup truck, reinforce the body with concrete, and start running these idiots off the road. They know this and act like who they really are. Trash.
The forums have the same lack of consequences. We cant block the forum trolls afterall. Wouldn't blocking a forum troll so you no longer see what they post be nice though.

I believe this to be true. However, it does not mean that Eve's playerbase is the most mature. The maturity level, at least the one exposed in the forums, seems to be of men who couldn't quite get past their puberty. Every other thread in C&P is about insulting someone or ridiculing someone for one's own gratification. They're about making others "cry" or "collecting tears" for personal enjoyment. Not exactly attributes rampant in adult behavior.

It seems like a forum warrior, by definition, would be someone that regularly posts on the forums and attempts to influence others and the game. I have, at times, been a forum warrior. Most of the people raging on the forums over this latest ****up are not forum warriors. Discounting their opinion as "forum warrioring" simply because they're posting on the forums is a mistake.
