SHHH, IS DISHONOUR TO FAKE KILLMAILS.
But srsly, that's pretty much the way to go. I've had this happen to me once, and this is the most logical way to come about it.

In what other context would you even want to self destruct?
Denying a killmail for someone is probably the only real use for it

Disagree. This assertion has zero merit. In RL and in movies and books, when else do things get self-destructed/scuttled? It seems to me there are ample examples of ship's captains initiating self-destruct while under fire or otherwise under threat of destruction.
It's a valid tactic, plain and simple. No, I've never done it, but I wouldn't hesitate to try in an applicable situation.
Frankly, self-destruct ought to have an area of effect so you can perhaps take someone with you. That makes way more sense than the OP's proposal.

Instead of whining you should be thanking them. They did what you weren't able to do. Plus they saved you time and ammo :). And you still think you deserved a prize in the form of a KM for your incompetence?

by that logic, you can just look up people in local, passing through jita, creating fake km's to post and annoy them.

It works better if they actually lost a ship and you can prove they had to self destruct when they call you out.

Self destructing has the unique characteristic in which it destroys the cargo and modules so that they can not be looted. In this respect, it has a real life analog to scuttling - which is intentionally destroying a ship so that it can not be used by the enemy.
I see no issue here, you tackled a carrier and he could do nothing to fight back against you, so he self destructed his ship out of spite. If you want his loot, then you have to kill him fast enough. ----------

I agree. Also, another point, that I don't really have a problem with, but sort of doesn't seem logical; why is there an alert to everyone around that you're self-destructing?

Offline all modules and empty the cap when SD is activated. Use some crap about all the ships power being diverted somewhere or other to initiate SD. Should make killing a ship that chooses to SD much easier. Or just give killmails but no loot upon SD, better than nothing.

I've looted self-destructed ships before, although the only thing left was ammo and drones.

Yeah, that works until battleclinic and evekill have the person upload the killmail, and it is not api verified
and the kill gets removed, you are ip banned, so you either have to go through the kerfuffle of resetting your router, and even then,
Your account is banned so you cannot login to those chars on the sites again, or you have to use a proxy everytime with a different char
and the admins usually have fun messing with your kills aswell, as a bit of revenge

Ps. to the trolls who may or may not have aimed the comments above at me, (you know which posters you are)
Generally, to fly something out of a station, you should have 5x at least the isk to replace it, note: I said out of a station, I do break this rule with one of the ships I can't dock
It is neither my fault, nor issue that you are so poor, you consider a carrier an awful lot of isk, One of these days you might actually get off your asses and find one of the more expensive ships in our ranks. (yes, you could infil the alliance, but youd never get anywhere near my tiny four man corp)
see look at all dat butt hurt~

This topic (and various iterations) eg
* different timers for ship size * self destruct initiasation immediatly overloads all your modules to 100% damage * killmail generation on self destructed ships
Has ALREADY BEEN PUT THROUGH THE CCP CSM PROCESS
* put forward to the assembly hall for public voting * garnered enough votes for the CSM to consider the issue * passed by the csm * taken to iceland and discussed and agreed by CCP that "it is a reasonable request and they will look into it" (feb 2010)
This issue, and indeed many many others also agreed by CCP under their own CSM procedures constantly pop up on the forums and indeed many are started as assembly proposals afresh - the author not knowing the ball is in ccps court, and indeed has been in ccps court for so long that it has gone moldy, grass has grown around it, and it has deflated slightly so that it makes that "pock" noise if you kick it.
However CCP have indicated they will not be even looking at the backlog for 18-24 months (not the oft quoted 18 months) whilst they fap off over stunning programed demos of realistic silk underwear slipping off the ass of caldari women in glorious 3d for incarna
