Hi there community.
I've got a bit of a problem here.. I'm aiming for a carrier, but I'm not sure which one.. I noticed that you need a Lv. 5 Racial BS skill for a carrier, and my Caldari and Amarr BS skills are both 0, and I really don't like Caldari BS, but Amarr BS seem interesting for me; really like the Abaddon. So should I go with Archon instead of Chimera?
So should I pick the Archon then, because I want to get an Abaddon, and in the process I get the Battleship to Lv. 5?
Please share your thoughts, and I'd like to know the pros and cons of Chimera and Archon, and your visions and experiences with them (and Caldari and Amarr BS if you like to share that information too).
And for those who are going to post; "Get a thanny, best dps /thread" I don't want to train irrelevant skills (Gallente sub-capital skills) just for a carrier. Keep your flame.
Toodles, Cas
PS. Why is the Archon 3300 meters long and Chimera only 1300 meters? :P Hattivatti |

Armortanking is always popular and amarr have some very fine battleships so I'd say go for archon.

Chimera is good at repairing structures Archon is better at everything else.

This
The archon is more useful in combat because it armor tanks and gets bonuses to armor RR. The chimera is good for repping structures but harder to use in combat because it shield tanks and most ships will be armor tanked and carry armor reps. Thus getting your tank repped is harder and repping others is less useful.
However in larger alliances this is( somewhat) less of a factor as the cap fleets can be quite large and mixed. The safe bet is the archon though.

They both are very different, so if you havent chose yet, you chose based on what your corp is going to do.
Our Wormhole OP field both archons and chimera's, but our archons end up using shield transfers because of the nature of our farming and ops.
If you want to join alliances and 0.0 ops, i suggest using the archon.
If you cant even decide base on this, both have their own pros and cons even when using their own stuffs
Archons has no fitting no problem, so they can fit 2 armor RR and 1 energy trans even with triage, OR they can fit 5 armor RR if they forfeit local reps
Chimera on the other hand have wierd fitting problems. They can only fit 1 shield+1 energy transfers or 2 of one of those. They also can only fit 4 shied transfers without local reps. However, because the nature of shield tankers having good resists (invuls, EM screens), most of the time even one can invulk thousands of dps tank from their transfers.
On the other hand, Chimera can fit for more cap recharge then the archon, OR fit equal cap recharge but more tank then the archon. Chimeras can fit the best local tank among all the carriers. This also means even the crappiest of chimera fits can do lv 5 missions. Which is kinda sad reputation for it (lol)
So the TLDR is does your corp armor/shield tank? do you want to fit lots of stuff, or do you want to have some flexibility?

I might have to go for the Archon then. It sounds more like a teamplayer and the majority of our large fleets are armor tanked with armor logistics - shield tanks are then used in smaller fleets.
So thanks to you all, and Frozean especially for the very detailed information! :) Archon it is then.
Thanks to all, Cas
PS. Do you think it's too much of a cross-train, when I have caldari-minmatar sub-battlecruiser skills and I now go for Amarr BS and Carrier? I will be training skills only to fly the Amarr BS, not frigates and cruisers. Hattivatti |

Its going to be pretty hard to jump from one to the other.
The both have in general Jump drive skills Triage(Logistics V dang) Capital energy emmision
But archon<-> Chimera Capital shield vs capital armor Capital shield trans vs capital Armor RR Tactical shield Manip vs Armor compensations Caldari BS V vs Amarr BS V
So yes. both needs insane ammounts of investments. an to jump to the other, more insane ammounts of investments. You dont really "cross-train" into carriers. There are insane ammounts of SP involved, no matter what specc'd char you are.

Not really, no. BS 5, and a large turret 5 take as long regardless of race. The rest ... well, getting T2 BS guns might be time consuming, but that's about it - Carrier is such an intensive train anyway, that most of the skills you get will be 'training for carrier' and about as much regardless which race you picked. And as a fringe benefit, Amarr BS are pretty good right now.

Chimera is better at tanking, it can get a very very nice tank, especially if it is triaged. However Most supercaps and caps are armor so archon is a great as it gets an armor bonus. I fly an archon and like the tank, but on eft a chimera can get a nice tank and triage and get a 25k dps tank and can boost for like 5 minutes, not sure if this is faction or not, im not on a comp with my eft. But in the end you might as well get an archon as it is more relevant than shield tankers.

Then some douche comes in his titan, one shoot you, and you can kiss your 5 minutes and 25k dps tank.

Let me just say this:
I trained for a Chimera, owned a Chimera, and flew a Chimera in fleet often. I no longer own a Chimera.
I now fly the Archon.

I recommend going for the Archon. One of my account's flies it and it is a great ship. The Amarr BS line-up is great too. --- This doesn't even seem to be a regular case of rats fleeing the sinking ship. Seems more like the rats are on fire, the ship is on fire, and the sea is full of drunk Russians. - Jacob Etienne |

I agree that it's more about which racial BS V you want. And if you want to do nullsec fleet PVP, you will want Amarr BS V. You will NOT want Caldari BS V.

I fly both, but I've found the Archon to be more useful 99% of the time. Did you also know what 90% of statistics are made up?

The Nidhoggur is the second sexiest capital ship. After the Providence.
