I personally think this is a good casting. he was the only good thing about the trash that was Doom, and i loved him in Star Trek and Chronicles of riddick. And the little information we have about the basics of the new film sound promising.
Aslong as
Quote: Our idea is to make a very hard, R-rated, gritty, realistic movie of Dredd in Megacity, so we've got to get the tone right. He's not going to take off his helmet. His bike is going to feel real. He's going to hit people and it's going to feel real."
Stays true all the way in production and its a 18 rating and violent, im happy.
edit: Although personally i sorta enjoyed Stallones Dredd considering i was not a huge reader of the comics thats probably why

Yeah I read this last week on ign, I think Karl could do it pretty well contrary to some opinions of him in the role. I look forward to seeing how this movie pans out. I really hope its a dark and gritty take on Dredd and the Megacity this time around.
Although the Stallone Dredd movie was pretty crappy I think Stallones naturally sad face was perfect for Dredd lol, under the helmet at least. He was way too short though hence his super high-rise boots in the movie.

I'm mildly optimistic about this, but a R-rating isn't going to be enough. It didn't make AvP2 a good movie and it isn't going to make this a good movie. It can't get much worse though, so that is a plus.
The previous movie was generally horrible and it wasn't even the judge Dredd I knew. He was played like an idiot blindly following the law, that becomes the generic action hero with a god awful sidekick and a romance. I didn't expect much from it, but it still managed to disappoint.
Dredd is a no nonsense man dedicated entirely to being a judge. He is very capable with a strong sense of justice and he doesn't do romances. He isn't very likable, but fits well in the lawless and violent world where such qualities are needed to keep things under control. He is still just a man fighting very powerful villains, so things tend to stay interesting. FFS some of the villains would be more fitting a superhero comic and Dredd gets pummeled pretty badly at times.
He should be thought more as a hardass professional soldier fighting a war, than just a futuristic police officer. Maybe with the R-rating they can portray megacity as a violent and ruthless cesspit it is, that at times borders on being a warzone or is a warzone, so Dredd's character seems more appropriate in the movie.

Is this the 3D rendered/animated one they were talking about awhile back?
If so, it may be great.. being able to use slight surrealism and over exaggerate features and action in ways you can't do with an actor's face would actually help things.
A full live action Judge Dredd could only be good (to me) if you got all of the people responsible for blade runner together again though.
Oh, and I almost forgot. I just made you read my signature. |
