I was going to be a combat pilot, but I'm fascinated by PI, research, invention and manufacturing. Mainly PI. I've read Louis's epic PI guide, but I have questions on how much it'll cost me to get a basic operation running and what sort of planet I should find. I've just completed the first tutorials and I've got maybe 350k isk tucked away after I spent everything I had on an advanced learning skills Eidetic Memory and Focus. (Made the extra money afk mining in an industrial ship while sleeping/work, but it's not really a viable long term plan. :P)

you will need a million at least maybe a little more. Just do a few more missions or something to get a little ISK.

Dang, wish I'd saved up a little more, but this fellow said I cant play the game unless I have good learning skills so I put everything on those. Took me damn 2 weeks with my limited play hours.
How about my second question? What kind of planet should I be looking for and what are the best raw materials for a starting operation?

Train some combat skills and kill him. He deserves it.

You have to do your own market research. Prices change all the time and once something is pointed here as profitable, shortly price of such item is going down.

your friend needs shooting. yes nice learning skills are important if you are going to play for any decent length of time, but you should intersperse them with skills that enable you to still play and have fun in the menawhile.

A "limited" colony will cost about a hair over 2m ISK with 8 extractors, 2 Basic processors and 1 space port.
Find a Storm planet and scan for "Ionic Solutions", and look for a high density of another player's extractors. If several players are clustered in the same area, it may be a good hot spot. With your scanning skills, the colors are lieing too much to use as anything more than a rough guide. The hot spots will NOT be in the middle of the whitest spots.
Cluster your extractors closely, link them to each other towards the space port then place the Basic processors on the far side of the space port.
Set your extractors to route to the space port. Set your basic processors to route from and to the space port.
Visit your planet in Planet Mode as often as you run the extractors for, I preferred the 23 hour run, but with one planet you can easily get away with the 5 hour run.
visit the planet as often as you wish to retrieve your Electrolytes and profit!
At the current prices, you'll need about 2000 units of Electrolytes for the planet to pay for itself, and if the planet is good enough, 2 BIFs should make that in 50 hours.

5,650,000 ISK per planet, not including any PI transport ships you might need
