I'm considering getting into capital ship component production and I have a few questions. I was under the impression that components were fairly lucrative. However, when I look at the cost of materials and what the items are selling for, even with a high material level, I'm seeing the items sell on the market for almost half the mineral cost...
Ex. Capital Armor Plates eve-central.com shows buy orders for about 3.4mil ISK eve-platoon.de shows my mineral cost at 6.4mil with 100ME
Same for Repairers, Cargo Bays, etc.
I must be missing something - does anybody have a guide/tips on getting started?

Try looking at sell orders instead, the buy orders will (almost) always be below cost, so people can try and make a profit reselling.

Sorry for the confusion, I meant sell orders, not buy orders, well below the mineral cost.
I guess what I'm trying to figure out is - how are people able to sell these components, in large quantity, far below the mineral cost?
Sell Orders: 1) Capital Armor Plates 2) Capital Cargo Bay
Mineral Cost: 1) Capital Armor Plates 2) Capital Cargo Bay

The same reason there are always ships, modules, rigs priced lower than there material cost:
The minerals you mine are free The datacores you research are free The salvage you salvage is free ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ CAPSLOCK, BECAUSE SOMETIMES REGULAR FONT JUST, ISN'T, GOOD ENOUGH. |

I hope you didn't leave the default mineral prices in the fields as those are way off.
My ballpark cost to make is 3,952,422.30 for Capitol Armor Plates ME 100. That'd be 100k profit per if i sold in Jita.
Where do you get this half cost figure?

Put in buy order prices for mins then compare to sell order prices should be a slight profit at times I've seen some cap parts with a 2 mill/part profit just depends on min prices and demand
