We've been hearing a lot about Core recently, but what is it, and what does it do? CCP Unifex gives us the scoop in his newest dev blog.

This. Also, thank you CCP for EVE, FanFest, and taking 7 years of my life. I may never get that 7 years back, but at least I enjoyed it. Continue your fight on the impossible.

All these new Dev blogs are simply awesome. They explain what's being done, what has been done, and what will be done in the future to improve the game and combat the shadow that lag has cast over the EVE universe. This is the type of communication the player base of EVE is used to and we welcome with open arms. While I understand it takes time to put these blogs together I hope CCP continues the trend. This should appease a good majority of those that wanted more openess on the subject of lag. Thanks a ton CCP. This is what seperates you from any other game company out there, and shows your relationship with the players is of the utmost importance to you. I think I'm going to cry.....*snif*.

I'm glad you like them and that you feel they are adding something. Whilst they take some time to put together, I and everyone else at CCP feels that the blogs are well worth the effort.

Edited by: Cinimrat on 19/08/2010 17:34:31 Edited by: Cinimrat on 19/08/2010 17:33:50 Speaking of graphics, can you guys comment on the much-cherished old cyno effect (featured in the Empyrean Age trailer)? Seriously, it was awesome and the current cyno effect doesn't really compare to it, and a lot of people would be made happy if it was brought back or an updated form was created.
If you guys just don't have the time to do it, that sucks but such is life. I would love to at least know if you do plan on re-adding it, and if so at what stage said planning/implementation is it? Alternatively, if you don't plan on re-adding it I can have some closure and mourn it properly.

The Core Graphics guys produce the graphics technology, the EVE Developers use that to create the actual visuals so I can't say right now. Let me go ask some people across the office and get back to you.

Very interesting blog - I think the fact that you're moving to core technologies instead of each team maintaining its own copy is evidence of some foresight and a reasonably sane development environment. It seems to me that you guys are basically maintaining the "engine" for Eve Online, Incarna, and possibly WOD. You guys make sure that we're all able to play the game while the development teams that are officially devoted to Eve Online are actually devoted to content generation in one form or another?
One final question - I had a friend ask me about WOD a few days ago... is the implication of this dev blog that you guys plan for it to also be a massive unsharded universe too?

@Core Cluster Team
Please Please Please..... Get the multi-processor friendly SSC rolled out ASAP!
I know this is a medium term solution for Lag but I feel in my bones that we will see large benefit once this is rolled out; especially if you pair this with a hardware upgrade to the Sol servers!

It's a bit off subject, but I agree. Bring the old effect back! One of my first moments of excitement in Eve was undocking from a station and seeing a jump freighter cyno out. Thought it was the coolest visual effect I'd seen in Eve.
But back on topic, I don't understand half this stuff y'all are talking about with gizmos and gadgets and things that go bleep. But it is awesome to see CCP reaching out like this and really shows in the feedback these threads have been receiving. I think they're some of the most positive threads on the forums in comparison to what? Perhaps the last year of dev blogs?
Very awesome CCP

I don't know if you can tell us this, but the technology in that video, is that something we may see in Incarna? I remember seeing it back a while a go, very impressive stuff.

There are no implications intended in this blog about our other games. The Carbon technology is there and available to be used.

Actualy, the technology shown in the video was the state of play back in March when it was created for our joint talk with NVIDIA at GDC. The tech being shown is the physicaly simulated cloth using their APEC framework. Things have come on quite some way since then although I should point out that the assets being used are game agnostic Carbon assets which let us show off the tech. The tech is being developed and will be available for our games to use.

So in other words that will be used both for Internet Spaceships as well as the Internet Vampires then?
How well will the Apex stuff work for us that prefer ATI hardware since Nvidia refuses to do the physics stuff on a dedicated Nvidia card unless the game is rendered by Nvidia as well?

Edited by: Che Biko on 19/08/2010 21:43:51 That Carbon video....wow. I've never seen a digital dress/hair fold around a woman before without skin poking through where it shouldn't. Well, in cutscenes at best. Nice. How does it feel to be working on the cutting edge of computer wizardry?
But I'm not completely convinced though, could you make a video of those two women wrestling in their dresses? If I still won't see skin poking through, I'll give you a 10/10. For now, I'll stick to a cautious 9/10.
