OK, so I finally decided to give it a go...
In the past I've always used windows as my gaming environment because it's "easier" - I use Linux for important stuff like running web servers and CCTV digital video recorders.
I've finally found a distro that will run stably on my home PC (formerly a windows gaming rig) specs are:
AMD Phenom2 X4 6GB DDR2 RAM ASRock Motherboard 2x nVidia Geforce 8800GT gfx cards
As other distros had trouble (variously) either with my "fake raid" HDD set-up or with my wireless card I've ended up with OpenSUSE 11.3.
So far I've installed the OS and rebooted fine, I've got Wine installed and configured and am currently downloading the Eve installer.
Wish me luck!
I'll post updates here as I get on with it, internet is a lil slow so the installer is taking awhile to come down. ===================================== It smells of spoon! ===================================== |

From what i read you are still missing the nvidia drivers. Don't forget to download and install them from their website or from repositories. (I prefer to use the original install, which gives you more control).

The first thing I did was to install the nVidia drivers :)
Biggest problem I'm now having is the internet connection here, it's taking forever to download the client and keeps dropping out part way through :(
I may have to wait til I'm in the office on tuesday (or later in the week) and download it onto a USB stick.
Guess I'll be sticking with windows for my Eve fix in the interim *sigh* ===================================== It smells of spoon! ===================================== |

You could use wget to download your client.
It tries really aggressive to download your file and resumes, if the connection drops.
open a terminal and type: (this is the offline-installer)
wget http://content.eveonline.com/EVE_Premium_Setup_174282_m.exe
If it really drops, then use wget -c http://content.eveonline.com/EVE_Premium_Setup_174282_m.exe
to resume.

Under linux, you'll most likely will need to use manual patches.
http://games.chruker.dk/eve_online/server_status.php
is your friend.
Another hint is a patch will COPY then PATCH a file, not patch in place. So if you run sisi, you can just do,
cp -al EVE/ EVEsisi/
and you get hardlinks instead of lengthly copy for sisi. It's a little bit risky that CCP will change their patching behaviour, but "copying" takes 1s instead of minutes :)
I also hear that OpenSUSE is good for you and supports nvidia drivers.
