Hey fellow Unix users,I'm new to linux after windows c****d on me. Right now I'm having issues starting EVE online. Everything is fine after i login, and I select charcter of my choice. The reall issue,is that it crashes a few seconds when i begin in a hanger after launching the game. I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 at the moment.
I'm using wine to launch game, and i downloaded the newest version(other than beta). I renamed, and then deleted the juke box thinking it was the error, but i'm still having the same issues.
I tried switching to xp mode, with wine tricks.
is there a more simpler to use Linux distro other than Ubuntu?

Make sure the jukebox directory was the one in c:\program files\ccp\eve\res\audio\

Try disabling sound from the login screen before character selection.

I have the same problem. I have to try to log on 5 to 10 times pr client. I tried removing the dir and turn of sound. :( I have an ATI card and I think that is the problem.

ATI is not the problem. I had the same issues, and it turned out I was not disabling the audio correctly. The jukebox problem does not cause this exact crash.
To be clear: I had exactly the same problem as you, and I was running 10.04 amd64 on ATI 58xx series gpu.
First, uncheck the audio enabled checkbox in the ESC menu. Then log in to the char selection screen. Go to ESC menu again and uncheck EVE Voice on the audio page (only avail. when you log in). This was the culprit for me.

Yep you where right. Turning off both sound and eve voice did the trick. :) Now it works perfectly. :)

I just wanted to report that after a little testing it seems that the problem is with eve voice. Now I start my clients with sound enabled but eve voice off and log on works every time.
