Really quite amazing.... thoroughly enjoyable read... got kind of confused as to what was happening in the middle there but it all came together rather well in the end! very nice..

imo, that's just taking things too literally. in-game travel times are design choices to make playing interstellar spaceships bearable. i find idea that fish will casually get from (actual!) river anywhere within cluster to someone's bowl within 1 hour is just ridiculous.
is that official lore: crossing cluster in hours is common; insta jumps with no preparation except for lighting cyno; crossing systems in minutes is norm?
edit: btw, thanks for the glimpse on shape-of-things-to-come
EVE is gameplay first, then mold lore around that. So yes, subversion of space-time and fast travel is very common

brilliant read i would love to nab Dropbear for a few mins to discuss an idea i had re this chronicle if he would deem a lowly matari peon like myself worthy ;P
as for the comment above about the time it takes for it to reach a plate, i can see what your referring too but think about the mechanics of the warp bubble etc, you only see it from a pilots perspective, i can get from one side of the universe in mere moments because of Jump Clones, it doesn't take all that long to pilot a frigate from one side of eve to another and what with faster then light travel bouncing around in jump freighters its not really that surprising, he does after all hint that in some of the more economical processing plants the river is simply a flue of water leading from spawning grounds to harvester. look up MRM meat if your over 16 lmao, that's how we get cow meat (as well as others) and if you add interstellar distances and spaceships its not all that different. <-- if you can get a video of this your a better man then me iv seen it once and it was grim. chicken nuggets never tasted the same....
but yeah aside from the above its a really good story. iv read a few eve related books i just wish there were more. i love a good saga all based in the same places and looking at eve the potential is ridiculous, im sure if ALL the chronicle writers got together you could earn a hefty bonus for yourselves by writing a book =]
even one filled wish a collection of all the chronicles as an omnibus of shorts id buy it ;D [just don't send it by your delivery company i don't want to pay for the construction of a starship to deliver it to me as well as the book! even if it will hit my door within an hour lmao]

The chronicles - keep them coming!
One interesting thing - why is it that the image is different in the thumbnail than when you open the actual story?
I point it out because the difference is in a way significant - that Jita 4-4 jacket or whatever it is looks like a mighty good idea for merchandise ;-)
Cheers and thanks for the stories.

I have never been so confused about a what happened in a chronicle as i did in this one.
could someone explain what happened (pm in game would be great)? __________________________________________________ HK-47: "Can I kill him master? I would very much like to break his neck, just a little, its been a long time fantasy of mine." |

It's not. If you look at the other thumbnails and the corresponding images in the chronicles, you'll notice that the thumbnails have text added to them.
The Jita 4-4 chronicle has a thumbnail. That thumbnail has text added to it with the name of the chronicle. Text inserted in a way that makes it seem like a print on a jacket. -----

Interesting. I had noticed that in other chronicles the thumbnail did have the title in text added to it. I guess it looked so good on the jacket that I never even realised it was not meant to be a part of the image! Good job.

About what happens when you die outside your pod, I think that drug has something to do with protecting us: "you don't really need your childhood memories, or your knowledge of how to pilot Jump Freighters. And the more situational your needs are, the more you can narrow it down, the less you need to bring along"
If you do not bring it along, then you do not lose it when you die, and those memories and skills can be stuffed into your med clone.
Now, do I have to have sockets? Infrared light goes through skin, and can carry a huge amount of information. Can I not have under the skin IR transceivers at the back of my neck? A plug in the skin is just a source of infection, and an inopportune pull of a cable in the wrong direction would result in a bloody mess. Surely in a time when we have warp drive and stargates, we can do better?

I love how this is written. It has the believability, richness of detail and reality of something written about real experiences in the real world, like what happens when the writer gets really immersed in the character they're writing. It had some parts that were hard to understand but I was so immersed in it I didn't really care. The atmosphere and essence of the story felt more important than the plot itself.

Edited by: Elsebeth Rhiannon on 15/10/2010 19:01:16 First, Dropbear, you need to write more. Good story, nice read. A little less emphasis on the food might have done good, but then again the description of the station terminal in general was pure win. The ability to make the reader interested in a character when you tell us practically nothing about who the protagonist actually is and what she is up to, is priceless in a writer.
Then, to be the spoilsport, the chronicle reads:
Quote: As for the third thing, we need to return to that moment of capsule breach, when your brain is scanned and transmitted via your capsule back to that facility.
The third thing to realize is that in this moment, the capsuleer has become data. Maybe only for a second, half a second, even less in reality, but for that moment we are nothing but 0 and 1 as we fly across light years of space in between heartbeats. It's so short that almost nobody recognizes the importance of this moment, and it's something only a few of us even want to appreciate.
The idea of the informorph.
Is this not in direct contradiction of previous PF on how the scan and transmit work, which implies that the scan is analog, and transmitted instantaneously via the FTL quantum coupled, err, thingies? (I'm bad with this technobabble thing.)
Quote: The cloning process is always on a one-to-one basis, as the molecular receptors bound in the gel structure [of the new clone's brain-to-be] are coupled to the burning scanner carried by the customer. -- The capsule makes an analog scan of the brain of the person. This extraordinary snapshot records the exact state of the mind, including every neuron connection between every brain cell. Because the scan must be instantaneous and efficient it brutalizes the brain in the process.

I was poring over your compilation earlier actually (very nice work, by the way), and saw the same thing you're raising here.
It might be a while before you guys get some more explicit, definitive answers on the process, as we (the storyline crew) need a chance to get a good discussion of it going, and through that, figure out exactly how it is all supposed to work (as you may have guessed from the vagueness in places, we're not 100% clear or agreed on it ourselves). There's no timeline on that, but it's something I'm interested in and will be pushing for us to clarify.
There's one really obvious (yet not) piece of evidence you might add to your list, by the way. That's what a capsuleer experiences post-death. The "story" you've been shown for the last seven years.
Does a capsuleer remember how they died? Yes.
So how did that information get from the clone that died to the one that woke up? Data must have been transmitted, no?
Genuine question for you guys to think about. I don't claim to be certain of the answer, yet.

Well, actually, I think the answer is no. It might have been transmitted, but unlike we who are used to ones and zeros and the speed of light actually limiting things tend to think, there's no reason that it must have been.
If you look at the PF on FTL communications (apologies to all physicists to linking, but I am a bioscientist in RL and I did read all the clone growth stuff today, so there ), it has a lot of mumbojumbo on quantum coupling FTL communications. The idea there is that you do not actually transmit a thing, but that when you do something to one part of the coupled pair, the other part of the pair instantaneously does the same thing, because due to the coupling mumbojumbo they actually sorta are the same thing. Standard gimmick in SF.
If that's how it works, it also makes such "transmissions" pretty much un-interceptable without gaining access to the other pair, saving you from opening one (admittedly interesting, but still) can of worms. Does not mean infomorphs are impossible, though. You just need some quantum mumbojumbo thing to explain it.
Thanks again for taking the time to read my notes & for the awesome game.

The "technobabble" as far as I understood it says that you have two "thingies" quantum-entangled with each other which allows faster-than-light communication, but only between those two thingies. There is no data that can be stored in that process, though - only an "equivalence" between the sender and the transmitter.
Having data that can be stored would open a pretty big can of worms: How many copies of any given capsuleer can walk around? Why are capsuleers afraid of death outside of the capsule, if they can have a "backup" of themselves stored somewhere? What happens if that data is changed or corrupted? Why isn't that happening regularly?

Edited by: Arkady Sadik on 15/10/2010 19:53:54 Sorry for doubleposting, but I just remembered something.
It would be really nice to have some way to raise such (perceived) inconsistencies in PF to the storyline team. There have been a number of hot topics in the past, and a number of "day to day knowledge" things would be nice to know, too. Some "standard" way to raise them, or to ask questions and getting answers, would be really nice.
I'm thinking about hot topics like "ship crew", which was (and sometimes still is) a huge debate until a dev confirmed ship crew on the forums.

Who all have access to that data, and so can create clone copies of said capsuleer at will?
As a clone copy inherits the original capsuleers's property, contracts, corp affiliation etc, do all copies have the same rights?
Maybe the Empires are not too afraid of capsuleers because they can at any time scam any capsuleer in the cluster out of their stuff whenever they want just by creating a clone copy, and telling said copy to transfer all that capsuleer's assets to a their own third party account?

Excellent news. I'm very much looking forward to knowing what you decide. (And yes, it's one of the areas where it's been clear that there have been differences of interpretation between CCP's writers.)
Originally by: CCP Dropbear Does a capsuleer remember how they died? Yes.
Do they? That sounds like another thing to check with the storyline crew, since Cromeaux Inc.'s business publication suggests otherwise:
Quote: And if the snapshot is taken too late there is the risk that the scan will fail or even that the revived clone will remember its own death, a very traumatic experience that can introduce severe psychological and functional problems in the clone.
Very happy to be able to engage about this, and possibly about other topics. :)

This was pretty much what I had imagined - we can remember what caused it but not exactly the sense and feelings after.
