Guys, if you have not bothered before, try LOTRO NAO! :D
It's such an amazing bliss, they finally brought the lotro store to live play and tweaked the game.
It's wonderful! give it a try! You dont have to pay for anything for a while, since level cap is 50 now for free players, of a max 65. You can explore during your level 1 to 50 journey some classic areas and if you really want to have others, you can unlock them at your own leisure!!!
Come come!
I'm on Brandywine server, one of the highest pop ones, and moar people is always good!
Im the leader of a very small kinship (guild) and can show you the ropes around, look me out as Atheoren in there. Explore and discover Middle Earth!
back to Lotro!

Jumping on the lotro f2p bandwagon. Seriously this is as good a deal as it gets for a fantasy mmo grinder with an actual storyline. Drop wow and pick up lotro if you actually want to have some solid gameplay and storytelling with your game.

<shrugs> the game stinks. and for me seeing this game going f2p proves that I am not alone in thinking so.

If you like the world tolkein made then this game has plenty of content to keep you happy and intersted. If its simply another mmo fantasy grinder you don't relate to then yeah it sucks about as hard as any other fanstasy mmo grinder.

Nice ... good for you! :D ... rest of people welcome to try and form their own opinion. These days, with so many options around, theres something for everybody. The Move to f2p as you put it was due to LOTRO's acquisition by WARNER, since they grabbing everything they can on the IP and the success of DDO's store.
The more people the better imho, and with a 65 main and other alts around 50 I really enjoy the game since I have invested a lot of time there. Main reason I love EVE too, specially since I'm closing the 100mill mark. If there's something I learned during my 10+years of online gaming, back in 1999 when I was playing EleMUD, is that no matter what, games that I have invested time in tend to keep me going. That's why I still rue leaving Eq1 for EQ2 ... I should not crave my necro fix if I had remained there. For me building something and wanting to keep it going for a while is a must.
EVE and Lotro for me.
Lotro is rock solid, looks very good to my eyes, has a very congruent and true to lore backstory and gives me a constant fantasy fix (I still miss a good necromancer class in an MMO, but can't have it all).
If you don't like LOTRO you might try REQUIEM:Memento Mori. Might be your cup of tea, community is like CAOD in flames but game has some neat aspects and is F2P too. I always reccomend it due to it being a bit obscure and the gore system, at least for shock value.
Anyway, though I will miss a fellow EVE player's company in Middle Earth, would be nice if you could give it a try just to look again.
I'm on Brandywine as Atheoren if you ever feel like it to pass and see the game anew.
Cheers! ---

Edited by: Florio on 11/09/2010 07:30:24 There's a bug/feature it seems where if you don't have a turbine account already you can't access the f2p. Luckily I already had one and I have just started on some elven-named server. The high res graphics are better than high res oblivion, it really is lush. The lag is a bugger though.
For the first time in the 18 years I've known her my wife has expressed an interest in starting a character on a (this) mmorpg, so I'm quite gutted I might have to buy another computer :)
I'll delete my char and restart on brandywine and get in contact brujo.

The downloader is a pile of crap. Using some special Pando p2p client. In two days only downloaded 200MB.

Edited by: Astenion on 11/09/2010 23:16:15 Their own downloader is a big piece of mule dung. Do what I did and go to FilePlanet and download the free trial from there. Took about 5 hours to download 10 gigs. After your free trial runs out, you can upgrade your account.
Oh, and btw, the Euro servers don't even have their own working downloader, so you either have to go directly to Codemasters or a third party site like FilePlanet.

Interesting. It took me a little over two hours with the downloader to get the hires game client and it plays really smooth and looks very good with everything set at max with 4x aa and 16x af. Much much better than even oblivion at max settings. I'm not even getting any lag at all past a bit when I enter a new area.
Maybe get a better isp and computer guys?

I love the world of Tolkien, and have read the books and seen the movies. And yes I loved them all. Except for the online game, which I felt stink.

Fileplanet just has the crap p2p pando downloader like the LOTR mainsite. The standard res downloader has stopped at 58MB. I hope someone puts it on bittorrent.

Actually went ahead and registered, then came to my senses and realised that A) I don't actually like fantasy games, though the LOTRO books were ok, as were the movies and B) No way in hell is Pando going anywhere near my computer.

Sounds to me like they're hurting for business and are trying to sell as many copies as possible before the final collapse.

Meh I changed my mind! It's grown on me and I like it now. Also the fact the map is HUGE!! ....
I mean I would go with Lord of the rings than WoW now. Thought I feel WoW just too simple and too cartoonist. Oh and LOTRO is free but weekends is a nightmare as their lag spikes. I feel I get more lag out of it than a 2k fleet battle in EVE... lol

I'm pretty sure they're going free-to-play (so they're not going to sell any copies...) because the owners put D&D Online onto f2p and significantly increased their D&D Online revenue.

Ah, I took a look, looks like they're doing what SOE just did with EQ2.
