Fred Phelps and the Westboro Baptist Church are internet memes.....Like pedobear, and Sarah Palin.
I never understood why certain religious groups spend more time fighting other religious groups and misinterpreting their own scriptures rather than practicing to be decent people....which is why religion was invented in the first place.

The Phelps are a hilarity, they're just another manifestation of the insanity that is our world. They don't fight other religions, they fight the 'homosexual world' and hate everyone (funny thing is they're just attention *****s and need a lot of counseling). I do love them

Yeah, imagine no religion.
Can't take the high road, people kill people no matter what flag, creed or cause they go under. Atheism has done plenty to exceed the damage caused by religions, in part because our higher population in recent times means more people to kill.

No it actually is illegal to burn the US flag in the US. Also illegal to hang it upside down if I recall.

How so? They believe in Jesus, they quote Christian scripture, and they worship the same god. Sounds pretty Christian to me.
His statement falls into the same category as those that say the fundamental Islamic terrorists are not Islamic. They say that they do what they do in the name of the God, but they do not represent the majority of their respective religions followers. This is one of the few situations where the saying "If it walks like a duck and sounds like a duck, it must be a duck" is not true.
Originally by: Plac3Holder but there are very few churches from that faith that preach anything but tolerance and love (and that it's ok to bang little boy's butts from time to time), but fundamentalists christians and muslims abound and all scare the living bejeesus out of me.
Even though I am agnostic I attend churches of various faiths fairly frequently to keep and ear on things, and I can say honestly that I do not think that you have been to a Christian church in many years. The preaching may not be as aggressive, but do not fool yourself that most Churches are all pixie dust and rainbows.

Your äfactsô are complete nonsense. 1: The bible doesnÆt say that, it was the level of knowledge of a certain period of time, but is not written in the bible. Also Christians exist today and none of them claims the world to be flat. 2: Where in the New Testament do you read that ? DonÆt mix Judaism with Christianity. 3: ThatÆs a plump lie. Christianity forbids killing. If Christians kill, they violate against the commandments of the Bible. Show me a single quote from the New Testament, where anyone is allowed or ordered to kill someone else ? The parts with violence in the Old Testament are superseded by Jesus (see my post above), but even if they were taken seriously, they are directed to Jews (and usually only to a small group within the Jews) and donÆt give anyone else the permissions for the violent acts.
The New Testament explicitly forbids killing and vengeance. And thatÆs the essential diffrence to the Islam: If Muslims kill infidels or blasphemer, they do this in full accordance with the QuaÆran, moreover they are directly called upon doing that by a lot of Suras (you can google that or watch the movie Fitna that quotes a couple of them).
Also your conclusion about going forwards/backwards is utter nonsense: look at countries today, that are dominated by Islam (e.g. Iran, Pakistan, many Arab countries) and compare them to those that are dominated by Christianity (USA, most European countries).

Edited by: Vogue on 12/09/2010 14:18:19 This image from NYtimes.com shows that the more prosperous a country is in terms of GDP the less religious it is. With with exception the USA in deeply traditional areas of the USA religion is still very popular. Myself I think consumerism is the new opium of the masses rather than religion. It's prevalent for geeks to bash religion as science and technology is their faith. Imo the whimsical vanity of easy gratification from consumerism creates acne on peoples 'face' that they are unaware of.

Its actually pretty accurate. Scientific and medical advance was kept at bay by christianity for over 1500 years in europe, it wasnt until their political influence was removed that we had taken any major steps forward.
If we are looking beyond (our and their) political and religious beliefs, Iran certainly isnt an underdeveloped country, and neither is Pakistan really (though there are huge differences depending on where in Pakistan you are. But then the country itself is merely 60 years old built on a mess the colonists left behind, much better off than many countries in africa in the same amount of time).

Nope, that part of the argument does not compute. Saying atheism does x, is saying having no belief in a deity does x, implying that belief in a deity would have been sufficient to prevent x.

If that were true, the world outside the European Christianity were 1500 years ahead in terms of medical advance and science. Europe would have been an isle of darkness, while the rest of the world around it would have flourished. If you know history, you know that this was not the case. Look at the history of the USA and the puritans and other Christians, who had built up that country in the past centuries. And compare that to countries dominated by radical Islam and sharia. Compare the number of Christian/Jewish scientist and Noble Prize winers with the Muslims. Compare the wealth or technology standards of Muslim and Christian countries. Or the great inventions, that pushed our world, how many of them came from an Islamic country ? Look at the facts and then tell again, that Christianity is backwards-looking while Islam is forward-looking. If you are a woman, I propose you move to the taliban-governed parts of Afghanistan, where you will have to wear a Burka and may not work as a teacher, because they think the Qua'ran says so.

You do realize that Islam, Judaism, and Christianity, all originated from the same area that most of the early advancements of mankind came from. That, in combination of the Wests constant urge to rule that part of the world to make their economic systems work better, has perpetuated the problems in the part of the world know as the Fertile Crescent. You perpetuating the myth that the Middle East is backwards in totality is a prime example of the ignorance that plagues this planet. Also, every backwards aspect of Islam you point out has also been perpetuated and fostered by the West to help prevent powers such as Russia, from sinking their fingers into the region. Part of the problem is religion, the other part is the Wests consistent urge to perpetuate instability so as to strengthen individual interests in the region

Not sure if it qualifies as a 1500 year advance, but in terms of medicine, yes the arabic world was way ahead of medieval europe up to the late 1700s, so was most of asia.
History is more than 100 years, and yes, europe actually was an isle of darkness.

One of the remarkable inventions of the past 2000 years was certainly to remove ***** from your living quarters, which wasnt an european invention.
Maybe dying in thousands because we cant wash our hands before touching food can be considered cultural achievement though.
As far as actual scientific breakthroughs after renaissance goes, the large majority has been the work of agnostics.

Quote me where I said anything like that?
As of today, both are backwards-looking and a problem for humanity, what I said is that islam was a lot more tolerant and encouraging towards science than christian oppression in medieval times.

Edited by: Ellentje on 12/09/2010 15:45:46 Edited by: Ellentje on 12/09/2010 15:45:08 Edited by: Ellentje on 12/09/2010 15:44:15 I have studied Islam intensely (I am atheist). With regards to the youtube video mentioned in this thread. It is not correct that Taqiyya applies to all Muslims. In fact it only applies to Shia Muslims. Although, Muslims are so divided and fractured that there are a very few Sunni Muslims who believe it applies to them too. My point above, however, does in no way state that therefore deception is not practiced by Sunnis. Behaviour is also greatly clouded in these matters by a duty not to criticise another Muslim; that is why so many news events involving violent Muslims are greeted by silence from the Muslim community.
The other points in the youtube video are entirely correct and would not be disputed by the majority of Muslims, except that (unlike the right-wingers) I see little evidence of "creeping Sharia" (quite the opposite tbh), and Muslim opinion is divided on punishment types (eg. most say apostacy alone is not sufficient for the death sentence, it also needs to involve becoming active against Islam).
If you are a thinking person, then do not fall into the trap of categorising all religions together, for instance, by saying they are all as bad as each other. They are very different animals. Read the scriptures, read their own forums, make your own mind up (Oh, and prepare to be have nightmares - seriously). |

I asked for a Muslim scientist, not fundamentalists, so compare that to Christian scientists. Here you find a top 100 list of the most influential scientists: The Scientific 100: A Ranking of the Most Influential Scientists, Past and Present. It also shows their religion. The vast majority of them were either Christian or Jewish, not a singe Muslim on the first list. How comes ? If Christeans were so backward-looking and Muslims so forward-looking, shouldn't we get the opposite result ?
