Edited by: Christie Baltimore on 12/09/2010 08:45:14 Since there's vacuum in space and no air resistance to slow ships down, why your ship speed goes down after putting afterburners off, when there' no thrusters in front of your ship to slow the ship down. If you throw a ball for example with a jet pack strapped to it to space, it continues going the same speed as its maximum speed was with the jet pack still on. Plz explain :)

The warp drives create some kind of sub-space friction, -IRC.

So the warp drive ****s the laws of physics so ships have to keep thrusting with afteburners on to maintain top speed? That's kewl.

No. This is a game and not RL. You are merely flying around in motor oil. The mechanic was designed that way and is not intended to simulate RL physics.

If there is friction it would have made sense to design the spaceships aerodynamically, like jet fighters. Just imagine the aerodynamics of a Moa
If the devs werent so lazy, they could have designed additional thrusters on the front and sides of ships which would fire when you turn. Also, the main engines could shut off once the ship reaches its top speed. So mechanics would remain the same but at least it would seem realistic. space isn't a perfect vaccum. so there is deaccelarion.
you ar right to say something's off though, since the perceived negative acceleration seems to be too aggressive than what it should be.
but then again, one has to consider the mass, speed and nature of technology in mind.
that, and the warp drive apparently creates a small gravity well/distortion.

Deaccelarion is when you get slower while speeding up.

Strictly speaking in physics there is no such thing as deceleration, when you travel in a straight line and "slow down" you are not in fact slowing down you are just accelerating towards the point you just came from.
A-----------B
As you are speeding towards B from A, your speed towards A is a negative, as you "decelerate" your negative speed decreases and therefore you are accelerating to 0 speed.

O rly? I thought that was deceleration. In fact it means a decrease in velocity, Getting slowler while speeding up, wat? Derp

ummm no.
Acceleration is defined as any change in Velocity.
Velocity is... simply put... speed with direction
Change either the speed or the direction and you've just accelerated.
Edit: And you can't "decrease Velocity". Not in the sense that you just implied anyway.

Well obviously New Eden is located in Fluidic Space. I wonder where Species 8472 is hiding out. Or for that matter where the stars and planets came from. _________________

If eve was realistic it would be incredibly dull, and incredibly complicated. All battles would probably last fractions of a second as ships whizzed past each other trying to pump as much firepower (probably nuclear) into the projected possible places the enemy ship (whizzing past on a different trajectory trying to do the same thing)would be about to arrive in. The calculations for this would all be done by computer and people would have little impact beyond switching said computer on, assuming there was any crew at all which there probably wouldn't be. Most battles would probably end with both ships completely missing each other (despite unleashing enough firepower to obliterate all life on earth) and having to spend weeks braking and turning around to have another go. This a good mmo does not make. It would probably make a pretty awesome turn based strategy game though.
As an aside jetpacks are not a viable form of propulsion in space

àif EVE was realistic, we'd never see any other ships; combat would be settled in 0 seconds by whomever got the correct firing solution and pulled the trigger first; and the Caldari, being missile nuts, would own everyone left right and centre due to being able to engage from far longer distances.
So Ç"&% realism. ùùù ôIf you're not willing to fight for what you have in ≡v≡à you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.ö ù Karath Piki |

Edited by: Kerfira on 12/09/2010 23:43:17 If you'd ever played the old games Frontier: Elite 2 or Frontier: First Encounters (also known as 'Elite 3'), you'd KNOW why EVE doesn't use real space mechanics!
Newtonian graphics meant that it was almost impossible to match velocity with your target and shoot it. Essentially it made the game much less enjoyable.
