I recently discovered a new hobby: being prepared, and slightly paranoid. Both of which fit right in with EVE.
I'm in the process of putting together an Urban Survival Kit, full of things that would help in a shtf situation, in a city. The biggest problem I've run into so far has been the bag selection. What kind of Magic Satchel would best hold my supplies, but at the same time blend in.
I don't need anything massive, nor horribly small, it should look like an everyday school backpack, but an outdoorsy feel is nice (because of the shock cord and clips that come with that style). The straps need to be padded, and comfortable. Overall the construction should be strong, and of good material. No bright colors, nor camo prints; reflective strips are ok. Lots of pockets is good, at least one large pocket is a must. If it is water bladder compatible that would be great.
So the question I have for you fine folks, is do you have any suggestions? Either criteria I'm missing, or bags that you think would fit my needs.
Thanks in advance for your constructive replies.

I do not have anything specific, but here is some fun fiction you can read: http://www.webscription.net/10.1125/Baen/0743471792/0743471792.htm

A word of warning. These two books are loaded with anti liberal, anti progressive themes. If you are one, do not even bother reading them, you will make yourself sick.

First off, you'll need water. http://www.lifesaversystems.com/buy.html
Water purification system, will filter out microbes so you don't die of dysentery.
Next, you'll need food.
http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product.aspx?Prodid=11487214
CostCo delivers a one-year supply for one person freeze dried.
Also you'll need something to defend your food and water supply from the rioters/zombies/the man.
http://www.gunbroker.com/
You can start here.
The gun is also highly useful for getting other stuff you might need. and further more why do i even need a sig? |

I got the 'SAS survival book' of ebay last year for ú3. Its very good. Tells you what vegetation you can and can't eat. How to set snares for animals, how to collect water and other stuff.
But living rough is very hard to get used to. Basically living like a tramp.

This. If I were you I would start planning some urban/rural campouts, where you start learning how to live on the street/wilderness and also plot your best courses for evacuating the city, especially if you are water locked. That is if you are real serious about it. Otherwise get the SAS Field survival book and Cody Lundin's When All Hell Breaks Loose: Stuff You Need To Survive When Disaster Strikesis also a good read.

Here's one that I like for backpacking on a short trip. Hope the link works as I'm on a phone and the minisite keeps poping up.

What you basically want is good shoulder support with a belt around you waist to take the weight off. Cabelas.com or another outdoor supplier is a good place to grab ideas

Edited by: Fumitsugu on 14/09/2010 06:25:13 No one has mentioned this, but the most comprehensive First Aid kit you can find and carry is pretty crucial. And a decent, full tang, knife. Bagwise, something solidly constructed, medium size, with a harness and sternum strap would be ok.

Guys, the OP is asking for a BACKPACK selection first and foremost... Only Culmen gave one suggestion, Crimsonjade probably tried too but he didn't link one properly.

And to be honest, with the number of brands, types, fits, and body sizes, the type of backpack one would use is completely up to ones own preference; so I for one decided to not answer that question because all I would have said is a back pack with enough room to carry all your ****, which should weigh no more then 80 pounds/ 36.6 kilograms fully loaded.
So to appease you I recommend this in particular.

All stuff I own. No recommendations of anything I don't own. These are tips on what goes into the backpack, not which backpack to get, which is down at the bottom.
1. Water purification. Katadyn hiker pro. Very light, easy to use, and will (no lie) turn ketchup into drinkable water.
2. Zip ties. 1001 uses.
3. Garbage bags. Same as zip ties.
4. SA XD45.
5. CCW permit. #4 may land you in jail before SHTF otherwise.
6. Variety of fire starting utensils. Lighters, matches, firesteel, etc.
7. Dry food. "Expensive" stuff like mountain house is fine, but dry rice, oatmeal, work too.
8. Aspirin/ibuprofen.
9. Small first aid kit. I like the ones from Adventure Medical.
10. A good sturdy knife. If it's a folding type, make sure it has a positive lock / safety. I really like my gerber covert folder.
Whatever backpack you get, make sure it has a camelbak. That said, the only way to get the right backpack is to go to an outfitters store like REI and try on several, WITH load. Any real outdoor store will have preloaded stuff sacks of different weights that you can put into the backpack and walk around with. You don't have to buy the backpack from them of course (though it's nice to do so), but definitely do not buy before you try.

If it was allowed I would carry my old S&W 32. revovler with me as well. :P --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
