My corp lives in a C1 with a static high sec. Having had our 2nd encounter with a gang that wanted a ransom or they would destroy our POS in a week. I was wondering how often I'm going to have to deal with these guys in the future.
They of course didn't attack. I think the fact that I took a tar-baby approach to defense changed their mind.*
*I prefer tar baby to d1ckstar. I'm just old-fashioned like that.

Well i would put it this way: If they give you week, they fail.
In week that wh will change its place atleast 6-7 times and can be 40+ jumps from them by time they should carry out their threat. And for measly few hundred milions split between punch of players, they will not fly those 40+ jumps.
I would newer ever pay unless they make serious threat, pay up or we blow it up in next 24 hours....
Extorsionist has one bad thing, pay them once, they come back for more later. If they dont come, they will hint their friends to come get some more....
I have alt corp with pos and have newer payed on these atempts to easy cash out. Instead i beef up defences. Expecially large faction tower can be nasty ting to take down in wh-space.
And very rarely anyone comes back asking second time. I just ignore their requests, no reply, not even polite decline.
You should have few people train skill to use those pos guns. much better way to consentrate fire then let them automaticly cycle one target to another.

To clarify it was 2 different gangs. The first one tried the "we have a blockade runner with ammo in your WH". I'm hoping they show back up this weekend.
The 2nd one was smart in that one BC was out in the open while 2 interdictors and a couple other BC's where cloaked nearby. They destroyed 4 ships of my less cautious corp members. They wanted 500 million, we laughed and asked them to bring it on.
The first one wanted 125 million, which they upped to 250 million after they lost 3 ships. They didn't get anything out of us except genetically modified livestock contracted from Jita.

But then, the last time our wormhole got heavily camped (by empire war targets) we had the entire alliance show up and wipe the floor with them.. ----------------------

A large tower in a C1 with no way of getting RRBS's in would be more trouble than its worth to take down...unless of course you have a myriad of ships floating in space that grab peoples attention.
Alot will test to see if you are stronted too..and will give up once they find out that you are.

Define extortionist.
****ers? Common enough. Serious? Not so common.
Unless they put your tower into reinforced they are just trying to scare you. It's only if they put your tower into reinforced that they should be considered slightly serious. The truly serious drop their own tower in place as a base of operations. Only the later guarantees a serious fight.
The truth is there are few enough corps who specialize in wormhole tower combat. You need PvP pilots that know how to fly battleships. Outside of 0.0 they are not as common as you think with a) the numbers and b) the patience to siege towers.

Your POS should do your talking for you in a WH. Death stars are not usually worth attacking in anything under a C4. (Unless your want their stuffz)

I'd say it's a common occurrence. However, I believe that partly it's due to the POS setup. In our first month we had 3 ransom attempts. The reason for it was our POS setup that screamed NOOB. It was our first POS setup and the lack of defenses, the lack of proper placement of defense said a lot about us. Now that we have a bit more experience, have changed our defense mods, repositioned them to more advantageous positions we haven't received a ransom demand since.
So if you're getting frequent ransom demands read everything you can on defense mod types and placements for whatever side POS you currently have.
