I recently decided to move a couple of my ships to different stations to avoid having "all of my eggs" or assets in one location. i flew each ship myself to the storage location, docked, bought a shuttle and flew back to my base of operations. these ships are not re-packaged, nor are they up for sale nor has anyone else been given permission to fly them. they are in my personal hangars. A few minutes after these transfers, I received notices that the insurance on these ships had been canceled. I didn't cancel the insurance, and both insurance policies were less than 12 weeks old. Can anyone explain this?

This should not have happened. You might want to file a bug report and a petition. (If you really care.)

Any of these?
Your insurance will be lost if you do any of the following:
Repackage your ship Trade your ship to another player Put your ship into a corporation hangar Sell your ship on the market Put your ship inside a contract.
If no, as previous poster said, petition it.

Did you open the insurance window first? This seems to trigger all the old messages at once (check the dates)

Did it say the insurance was canceled or did it expire?
EVE Insurance is notoriously bad when it come to informing you that your insurance is about to, or has expired. I get my automatic notice that my insurance expire after my ship blows up and I am getting only the basic coverage.
I wrote a suggestion to adjust the automatic notice to trigger when the insurance expires and not when ship blows up, which would be to late to be informed your coverage has lapsed. Their response was that it is up to the players to keep track of when your ship insurance expires by checking it regularly. So, they won't fix this.

Yeah ... it's hard to say. Petition it and maybe they can tell you what happened.
A few things ...
1) Yes ... the Insurance Notifications are horrible and have been for a very long time. If you have insured ships - what you need to do - is to periodically open the insurance screen - which will trigger any waiting messages. This is the only way you're going to get any warning that the policies are about to expire.
2) As to putting the ship in a Corporate Hangar - you can also insure the ship for use by anyone in the Corporation (of course you need to belong to a Corporation to do this). You do this by putting the ship in a Corporate Hangar (IIRC) and THEN taking out insurance on it from the corporate wallet (which you need the corporate privileges to do). This will allow anyone in the corporation to use the ship - as long as no one outside the corporation uses it - or it gets re-packaged, etc.
3) You might also want to think about whether or not you really need to insure each ship. At one point in time, right after I started playing, I insured EVERYTHING. I insured my shuttles. I would have insured my rookie ships if the game would have let me. Then ... as I began to accumulate ships ... and play the game for a while ... I began to realize that I had already paid as much in insurance for some of those ships as it would have cost me to buy a new one. At that point - I stopped insuring everything I owned. Look at the job the ship is doing - and then think about how dangerous that job is. If you have good reason to believe that your ship is going to be destroyed in the next three months ... then it might be a good idea to insure it. Miners and Mission Runners have a fairly low destruction rate (at least once you learn how to play the game). PVP ships - have an extremely high destruction rate.
4) If you have a T2 ship - that ship cannot be insured for it's full value. Mostly, it seems to get insured for about the value of one of it's T1 counterparts - though I don't believe that is the actual game mechanic involved.
5) You get a 40% insurance pay out - if you buy NO insurance at all. Buying insurance gets you more than that. The Platinum insurance gets you approximately the ships market value. How much good this does you can vary some with how up to date the market valuations are for that ship are and whether or not you got it cheap, made it or can get your replacement for less than the pay out. At one point in time - it was actually somewhat popular to make money simply through insurance fraud. The pay outs were much higher than the market prices of ships - so people would simply go out and buy ships, then self destruct them for profit. That was supposed to have changed, so that while suicide gankers will still be compensated by the insurance company for the loss of their ship to Concord - they aren't making large profits on the deal any more.

I'm pretty sure that Petitions created in either both go to the same place.
