I would love to see that one out again with modern 3d graphics.

good games that get remade tend to not be good.
See: the pile of filth they are calling the new x-com game.
with that said, x-wing vs tie fighter wasn't that good.. it was just way before its time
make it like dust... but uh.. in space.
60 vs 60 or so, massive combat areas, player commanders in capital ships |

Yeah, that's so different from the original it doesn't even count as a remake.
For anyone interested, there are some amateur 'spiritual successors' to the original X-Com which aren't that bad. This is probably the best, and it's free and open source.

What I'd like to see is a space trading game where people fight over a player driven economy, kinda like elite but re-made in an mmorpg style where you could build your own empires and conquer solar systems... _______

Also, to a lesser extent, Millenium 2.2 and Deuteros.

Ah ...
I'm afraid a lot of the games or game types I'd like to see revived ... will never happen. They just don't appeal to a broad enough audience. There was a point in time when there were a lot of these titles - back when only nerds owned computers. But - with the swing to more popular games ... that would appeal to the general public ... these things disappeared, or became niche games you really had to search for.
Mostly, they were tactical and strategic military games based on old board games, flight sims, Naval War Games and such.
Steel Panthers Utah Beach Burning Steel
Even a shooter like Planetside ... actually has limited appeal - specifically because it was about more than just mindlessly shooting each other. It was as much the players as SOE that ruined that game.

System Shock 1. "Welcome to my death machine interloper".
DooM/DooM II with decent graphics and the ability to look up. Oh wait...
Frontier Elite II. How is it that even now there isnt another game where u can seamlessly fly from one planet to another and land on the surface? The whole galaxy on a single floppy. Extra points for an MMO version. (yes i know about infinity)

Police Quest was mentioned; I'm hoping that was the first game? Sierra did do a remake of that, using the newer engine, but my brother and I was not as fond of it.
Also:
Manhunter: New York Manhunter: San Francisco Gold Rush [obscure Sierra game, early attempt at branching plot]
I'm tempted to include Myst IV: Revelation, simply due to its interface and the timed puzzles. Only game in that series I'm unable to complete.

I could go on forever, since there are so many great games from way back when... also consider this, alot of those games were great because you could play against a friend on same computer with a joystick each. Splitscreen playstyle and blowing eachother up was great :)
Here's a couple of links that might help you if you forgot what a game was called...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_video_games
And this is one of my favourite pictures, it lists popular PC games all the way back to 1990.

Enjoy :)
Master Of Orion 2 rocked!!
Master Of Orion 3 sucked lemons.
I would vote for a remake of #2. I love that game and still play it.

The best part would be, that you wouldn't have to create anything really new for the remake. You could just expand and improve the stuff that was already there. The only thing that was a real problem was the tactical space combat portion. Granted it worked sufficiently well, but there was no real reason to use smaller ships or fighters for anything and firing arcs were in reality an almost useless feature. Also, why for the love of God couldn't you create a custom template that all your starbases would use and be upgraded to. WHY!!!?

Not as old as some other games in this thread, but a remake (which CA are probably going to do anyway) would be bliss.

Downloading now and will probably lose the rest of the year to this game.
But I would still like to see a straight up remake of master of magic just to get the graphics and sounds into the modern age.

I love the sense of exploration that is missing in Eve, the fact that flying will actually get you somewhere, i.e. cruising through a dust cloud with limied sensor range only to find a gang of players mining. A massive multiplayer update of this with player owned stations, player-run factions eith their own ships (available to a certain extent with mods) and generally a massive expansion in graphics and scale would be epic!

... yes... **** YES... I have tried so many other flying combat simulators and they always disappoint.
That said... I'd like to see BUBSY get a remake. For those of you who missed out on this obscure game... it was for the Sega Genesis and you played a BOBCAT (THAT CAN GLIDE!!) who beat up EGG THROWING ALIENS and CHEESE WHEELS OF DOOM. My favorite thing to do was find new and inventive ways of killing the main character (there were so many ridiculous death animations). _______________________

Gots my vote, despite the massive and annoying amount of bugs the original had.. I played that game into oblivion. Still got the disks somewhere.
Master of Orion 1 2 (3 was beyond terrible) Chrono Trigger Tie Fighter (much better than x vs tie imo) Emperor: Battle for Dune Final Fantasy IV and VI (2 n 3 on snes) Goldeneye (THE classic n64 game of legendaryness)
And every single bar/pub and sandwich shop/deli should have a Street Fighter 2 Arcade, not remade, the original.. off topic, I don't give a ****.. they should damnit!

X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter could do with a remake, but overall it was inferior to TIE Fighter. It had so much potential, but Lucasarts never bothered giving it a story as in depth and awesome as TIE Fighter.
I wish they would update TF completely, keep the story, gameplay, etc the same, just maek it pretty and make it run on modern pcs. Still have the collectors edition cd lying around, waiting for the day I can motivate myself to find or build a pc using old parts that will support that game.
I have never enjoyed a game as much as that one.

Im quite sure i wrote about "modern dumbed-down remakes". Hmm, yep it is still there.
Dunno, maybe you missed it but there are 3 kinds of remakes: - ones where only graphics, some major bugs plus few other minor things are fixed. Those remakes i like and have absolutely nothing against them (ofc when "new super 3d gfx" looks nicer than 1995 2d sprites - example of remake i dont like from this kind is UFO AI, graphics is just so damn ugly that X-COM does it better). - new and "supercool" remakes made for idiot-players of AD 2010: X-COM (the new one) is prime example of this. So is Front Mission Evolved (well it is supposedly next game in cycle but... um.... yeah... quite good tactics was made into mediciore shooter). And prolly tons of other games. - new game (and new title) trying to work as "spiritual successor" to older games BUT failing. Be it with stupid mechanics, dumbing down gameplay, bugs worse than in original game, or w/ever. Elemental (MOM) and Fantasy Wars (successor to Fantasy General) sit in this category.
Till now most remakes were the 2nd or 3rd type. Thats why i just prefer old series to be left alone. They are still playable to this day and at least noone will screw them up. 3rd type is not totaly bad (as they dont take name of original series) but when you see that game takes most from older title and fails to even land on comparable level, its kinda sad. Still there are some decent/good games in 3rd category (at least for me: UFO: After- series, Afterlight imo was very solid game, well maybe except for candyland graphics).
tl;dr most new "remakes" arent even remakes per se, they are just using old series names to deliver new ****ty game. And true remakes are kinda rare (but tend to be good).

Nor trying to argue with you on that specific point but those are not actually remakes but instead money grabs based off the previous games popularity just like you said. Hence my wish for a straight up remake of mom by simply dragging it into the modern age by upgrading the graphics and sounds. As far as the 'elemental' comments go welp as I stated in another thread stardock tends to release games that are not quite finished but then go on with player involvement to turn them into 'sleeper' hits that should be anchored on everyones harddrive especially if they opt into the additional player made mods that expand on the graphics and overall gameplay.

Eh? this thread still lives .... page 4, ahahaha.
If they do a remake with core gameplay preserved and tacked on with modern enhancements/improvements (that has been proven to work), sure I'm all for it. However, if they do a remake and some young inexperienced hotshots decides to overhaul the core gameplay based on his/her console gaming/modern PC junk games and limited understanding of what made the game a classic .... the don't bother ... just don't.
My A-list:
* X-Com (the original and probably X-COM 2 : TftD are still the best .. the rest can be passed over) * Master of Orion * Master of Magic (sorry, the current Elemental WoM is something not worth getting excited about) * Fallout 1/2 (they killed it with Fallout 3) * Imperium Galactica/Haegmonia (the more recent Distant Worlds has too many screw-ups in both UI, gameplay and codebase) * Privater/Freelancer * Space Quest & King's Quest series * Elite * Megatraveller (no one, I repeat no one has even produced a game in modern times that follows-up on this genre) * Ancient Art of War (super classic, who here played this once upon a time?)
A special mention to Nexus: The Jupiter Incident ... someone needs to continue the series. |

Carmageddon series.
Ever see that old movie 'Death Race 2000'? It's not who gets to the finish line first, but more a matter of how many pedestrians (and other racers) one takes out along the way. Extra points for doing funny things to kill people like backing over them, impact during a drift, piledriver (crush between car and wall), and my favorite, collide with an object that flies off to kill someone. _______________________________

Matter of fact its just got a new engine and some other goodies that lets it run even better and paves the way for a much prettier overall presentation. But as for the most part you play at extreme zoom levels its practically identical to the look of supreme commander when zoomed out in icon mode so its retro graphics are not even apparent.
But like minecraft its not about the eye candy but the game experience and this game has enough complexity and sheer replayability for a dozen seperate rts games. Plus the game creator puts out patches like every few days to continually refine the game and add new stuff to throw into the game map that its almost like getting a new game every month or so when he releases an official patch. Plus its super easy to get into the beta testing for official builds as it has a built in beta download button that act like the normal patching button. But like eve you need a seperate install unless you want to stick with the beta builds.

Sim City 4 mechanics with 2010 graphics overhaul, plus bendy roads and plots not restricted to 4 directions.
I want to make a city with as bad an infrastructure as london that actually works. Oh wait... |

One of the best rpgs in the whole gaming history. Deserves a remake, no question about it!

Too much to think of heh
Ultima Underworld 1-2 Star Control 2
Thing is that it's not that some of nowaday's games are not as good... they just don't have the same effect as those did when they were something completely original Boink! |

Originally by: El Tuco X-Wing vs.
Amen 100% and I do also have collector edition as well. I guess all the nooblets that says "X-Wing vs Tie Fighter" for remake, never heard of "Tie Fighter." Such a shame. TF is the first thing I thought of for remake as soon as I read the OP's title. ----------------------------------- Peace through power! |

Already in development as a reboot instead of a sequel, here's the 2009 trailer not sure if there's any more recent ones though.
