It's pretty simple really. If you can't personally think of a reason to fly one (specifically the covert cyno and jump bridging) then they aren't worth skilling for. ~_~

They're just a tool, and if you PvP in them, you're probably doing it wrong. The only thing a BO is good for is bridging friends on top of unsuspecting targets. Before training for one, you'll probably want first: 1) More than 5 stealth bombers available to drop on on top of peeps 2) A blockade runner to hold bombs and jump fuel. 3) A carrier pilot willing to cross-train the skills you've indicated, as they already have many of them.

Capitals and BO's utilise mostly same skills so in that regard if you can fly a BO you could fly any other capital of a same race as well with little investment. So as a plan to go straight for BO's I'd say NO but as a side plan while training capitals, why not since only difference in plan is the actual BO skill and astrometrics V for jump portal.

black ops are fairly e1337est for front lines use, when a bomber gang if forming up a blackops with a portal can make for some extremly funny hot drop ganks.
Get a few black ops togther in a semi gank fitting (damage mods and plates) you can drop smaller gangs fairly easily where bombers would get wiped out fairly fast the black ops themselfs offer a good amount of staying power.
Just dont directly compare to a teir 1 bs or you will cry, remeber that portal and built in jump drive is what your really paying for and if oyu cant make much use of those aspects they are just a really expensive sub par BS.

With the current state of black ops, I would not recommend training them on their own. The only reason anyone should train a BO's atm is if they already trained a carrier and simply ran out of useful stuff to train. From a carrier, the only skill you have to train to use one is the BO's skill itself. The jump portal is an extra couple weeks of training but many already have astrometrics 5 for probing. The same is true for cyno 5, I had my main cyno alt train that before hand just to save on LO for carrier/dread jumping. And no, it wasn't to save isk. Fuel maybe cheap and abundant but cargo space is not.
I have a redeemer, it has 1 kill. It was a random cyno frigate I stumbled onto while undocking. I've never used the jump portal on it and I've only jumped through a buddies jump portal once. We dropped 5-6 recons and bombers on a week old belt ratting vexor. It was only a proof of concept test and although that poor vexor died horribly, the proof of concept was a failure (fuel usage too high). That test took place after the BO's buff. Yes, they actually got buffed to their current state. It's really amazing that despite how terrible they are now, they were actually worse at one point.
Thus far you shall read, but no further; for this is my sig. |

If you just want to use it as a VERY short range portal, YES.
If you want to use it for anything else, NO. There are much better options to them and much cheaper.
They rolled it out pre nerfed as said by them and then they did not fix it in the next expansion...
Black Ops battleships are still fail and no telling when they will be fixed.

Yes. If you've only got 1 kill; You're doing it wrong, and not as a part of black ops fleet.
Trying to fly blackops under any other circumstance than blackops gang is very much like wife of muslim that should be wearing full veil, using bikini.
It just doesnt work that way, and if you try only end result is horrible death.

@ OP
Black ops do their intended role just dandy. So too ****ing bad that it isn't the cloaking solopwnmobile you really wanted to make a thread about.

Blackops are gimped imo, only by their lack of range. Yes they should probably be a -little- tougher than a T1 BS, and their fitting requirements leave a lot to be desired. But really, you send one guy out in a Stealth bomber, or a Recon, scan someone down. and boom. from as many as 10-20 jumps away, you have just brought 600-1000 DPS to your target, no warping involved (ever had people feel safe because they are 80AU from the gate?) There is no risk running around through gates, attracting a ton of attention from defense fleets. You fly around with 10 battleships in 0.0, unless you are in super carebear land, they are going to form a bigger fleet and come shoot you. You fly a single recon around while your fleet is parked in a deadend system the next region over? "Hey who wants to form up and hunt down this rapier? No one?"
Right now. You can bridge 50+ stealth bombers (one way trip) at max range if you use some cargo hold for fuel. Or about 7 recons the same distance Linkage and Linkage
That doesn't take into account -getting there- which is a giant pain in the arse.
Basically when I go out with a bomber/ recon gang. I do two things. I setup refueling stations with giant secure cans (or bring a Viator with the gang at the time). And I also bring the Blackops to the jump point on it's own, forcing the bombers to hoof it there the slow way. So it takes way too much planning to bother most times. But the results can be spectacular. Linkage
It is possible to use them for "solo" pvp (really gotta have the alt, so it's not true solo) But you really have to choose targets well.Linkage
Personally, I also like my blackops for shooting small moon mining pos's. No risk of getting trapped when you are out in the middle of nowhere.
But anyway, back to the point. You basically really have to WANT to fly and use them, otherwise you just won't. I've never flown in pvp combat with another blackops, even though everyone likes to say "oh I've got one" or "I'm skilling up for one!".

The only thing that needs fixing is their price. (or people need to grow some balls)
People are hesitant to jump in 3-4 BO battleships because of the price and risk involved while it can be a very viable gank strategy. You can take out unsuspecting targets pretty well that way. And that's what black ops do well.
