Edited by: Chromoburst on 04/10/2010 17:34:50 Idea: Let us personalize the appearance of our ships! It'd be great.
Details: At a minimum group each surface on a ship with other surfaces and let us change the tint of each group within some predefined ranges. Better than that would be to provide a list of textures to choose from as well like camo, checkered, striped, shiny, matte, etc.
Why?: 1. Maybe I want to tint my scorpion entirely pink so that my enemies suffer greater shame at thier defeat. 2. There is extensive market data showing that personalization is a huge facet of customer retention. 3. Customizing things is fun.
Other Ideas: 1. Make the customizations only possible at select stations. 2. Corporate Logo's on the ships.
Please support this thread with a bump.
(Just think of your own ship and how you'd customize it. Think of matching colors on your team mates in roams or corporation/alliance wide ship color requirements.)

I think that this could open more market. Depending of the size of the ship you will need an amount of tint and a place to do it.
The color of the burners will be nice too.
Maybe light effects (think about TRON movie, yes, is crazy)
I'm a really fan of customization.
It will be nice also customize Corp Pos -Mess with the bestą ądie like the rest |

I would back this whole-heartedly, but the only concerns I see, at least where CCP would be concerned is that different colors are already part of the purchasing decision when buying a faction ship version. Another would be that because this isn't already a part of the game in some form, they would have to retexture every single ship in the game to make it work and then there's the new textures and the coding.
But personally I think it would be fantastic to be able to customized the appearance of your ship and especially to have your ship's name visible as well.

Have a look at the commonly proposed idea's thread for player made ship skins.
This idea gets raised about one every 2 weeks and tends to get rejected doe to lag and offensive colour schemes. Macrointel, the place were the nature order of the universe does not hold sway. Pirates and ore thief's are congratulated by carebears for the actions. |

The lag thing is BS. Plenty of MMO's have done it without an increase to lag. The offensive color scheme thing is solved by no putting offensive colors as allowed choices.

Plenty of MMO's may have done it, however how many of them allow the same number of players on the same shard?
Eve can have battles involving more players then some MMOG's allow on one shard never mind in the same place. Macrointel, the place were the nature order of the universe does not hold sway. Pirates and ore thief's are congratulated by carebears for the actions. |

Yes, Fallen Earth. They play on one large server just like Eve and they recently added customizable characters and vehicles after spending the last year saying it was impossible and the game wasn't built to support it. Just more proof that game companies will tell you whatever they feel like whether its true or not.

Because it would be hard to set the customizations to view only when another player selects "Look at".... Much like gun modules?
I believe it's a great idea, I've also seen some fricken old games where ship names are present on the hull, sure that can't be hard... And again, only viewable by other players clicking "look at" would drastically reduce lag, making customization lag present only when trying to look at a specific ship.

Is this how modern graphics cards work?
Say you have two ships. One is solid brown. Another has an image of a Justin or Darien body part skinned to the ship, where no two pixels in the picture are the same. And say that over time you wanted to vary the opacity and tint of the skin. Skinning both ships should take the same effort, zero, from the server. And even though the image of the second ship is much more involved and dynamic, I think that is what modern video cards do, your CPU should not be involved in either skinning process. I don't see how skinning would be involved in lag. OTOH. if we knew what really caused lag, it might even have been fixed by now.

Heck, Earth and Beyond offered different paint schemes.
That was how many graphics cards ago?
