edit/so not having read through all pages... This will be a pain redoing all characters (yes I have myself to blame for having so many chars) but will there be any at all ways of trying to get it a similar look as previously per auto?
And what happends if I don't update it and let the grace run out - force random generation?
Will this also affect the image server as we have it now? Eg the avatars on the forum - will they in any way be modified or will they be based upon a front-face capture of the redone avatar?

Gallente are suppose to reflect the French people and represent the French culture, and being French its very natural that they would look feminine in appearance.
Its all part of the "stick tho nature" design principals that CCP work with. They also use actual names of minerals mined from moons, planets and the like (don't know how the base minerals came to be )

Like I said earlier. We don't need this at all. Spend more time working and fixing what you already have instead of this.

Whenever avatar height is put into player hands you'll just about always see a highly unrealistic number of super short or absurdly tall avatars anyways, quite often so much that you just end up with two categories of player height and neither will look quite right (or even totally off). Aion comes to mind and I really hate the avatars in Aion as a result.
People complaining about lack of height control should reconsider the implications of having that ability. I for one don't want to be surrounded by dwarfs and giants every time I station up just because other players can't settle for some kind of average height.

This is how I see my character as I hurtle through space but I suspect I'll be somewhat disapointed come the new avatar.... for shame

I just can't believe there's no way to "import" the current faces in the new editor, at least as rough starting canvas. I spent considerable hours to make my *many* characters exactly like they are and if I won't be able to identify with my self any more I don't see a reason to keep playing a game that loses even the most basic feature: self perceived identity. - Auditing & consulting

The solution to extreme hight variation can't be the removal off all customisation of hight. That is just overkill on the issue. That said I'd rather have flawless animation than minor alteration of avatar hight. It does put more demand on body/muscle structure though or we will all end up looking like clones. I would like to see what kind of difference there will be between diminutive, muscled and fat body types on otherwise identical characters.

If there were a range to choose from though, it would be nice. I don't really want to see a 7' tall skeletal female though. I know 7' women exist (basketball players), but, well, there has to some limit. It would be nice to make my 3 female characters different heights though, because well, their current facial structures dictate different heights.

Maybe, but you'll still end up with many many players going "I'm going to make my character tallest/shortest possible" even if the difference isn't all that great.

Looks awesome! Looking forward to trying it. Shame we can't vary height, that said I dislike the huge variances you seen in other mmos so if you were to allow I'd hope it'd only be over a narrow range anyway and for that it's probably not worth the effort.
I would be interested to know what parts of our character can be changed after first creation and what can't i.e. can we change cloths or hairstyles, can we add tattoos later and if so can they be removed once added (I imagine laser tattoo removal has come on leaps and bounds) and will making any of these changes update our in-space/forum portraits.
Even if the option to change won't appear until further down the line I think it would ease some peoples tension knowing what they could tweak later, if anything.

I have to say those portraits look pretty darn snazzy. I'm so glad I just upgraded from laptop to desktop w/HD output. From reading a lot of the backstory of Eve, I believe the different races are descended from our own different human races. And looking at the Minmatar female, she definitely looks black. So will the different races actually look like different races? Black, white, oriental, etc.?
CCP, I think that every option should be available to every character type. So if we want to dress a Caldari male in the clothes of a Gallente female, you can. (Not my personal choice, but whatever floats your boat.) Leave it up to the players what they want to do. Ofc, that shouldn't stop you from starting at a suggested stereotypical appearance.
I may just start hanging out on the test server to see what you have going on in there.

Weight and muscularity will be adjustible ( with different contraints per race / bloodline ) but height is not adjustible. Different height avatars require an animation system or a set of animations multiple orders of magnitude more complex than having all the same height. There's a lot of things we can't support with different height avatars without considerable extra engineering and art investment which we prefer to spend elsewhere. That said, the men are taller than the women.

Several questions:
1. After creating new avatar will we need to wait for incarna to see characters body once again. 2. Would it be possible to make it that we get several free makeovers, like new players are getting 2 remaps. It will take a lot of time to make my avatar look good and I wish to be able to edit it if I screw up. 3. Will you keep the old avatars somewhere, I wish to have my old avatar in game for nostalgia reasons. Could be a new item.

Quote: Where have all the sliders gone?
The new character creator is more hands-on than the old one. We really wanted you to feel like you were sculpting the face yourself and tried to limit the amount of sliders as much as possible, putting sculpting of the face and body and posing of the face into the character model. In sculpt mode, you grab onto the nose and move the mouse to make it a bigger, push in the chin, pull the forehead and so on. Once youære done sculpting and picking clothes, hair and such, you use the same method for posing. You grab your eyes and move them to control where your character is supposed to look, you grab the mouth to make him smile, and pull on the eyebrows to make the smile look a little mean.
THIS TOTALLY SUCKS (if it's the only available option).
I would like... no... I want... hmm, not strong enough... I DEMAND to also have a mode of character creation where the sliders are back... and not just that, BUT ALSO get a "face import/export code" field where all the choices made will be reflected in a string of characters that can be rapidly altered or shared.
P.S. Think "Mass Effect 2".

Yes its goign to be weird changing your face after being accustomed to your current one.
Also, if you read the blog entry the face editor will be going live on sisi soon, so get into sisi and try it there, if you still want to complain, then by all means...

Are you serious? Some of the older and more basic games have height scalability.
You mean to tell me that every man or woman in the eve universe is the same height as the rest? Yes, I play a Brutor and also am an immersionist in my RP so I am rather biased when talking about these things. Brutors are supposedly the largest males in the universe, that's why the Amarr picked them to be the heavy workers as much as they did. What, are you guys gonna just revise the PF somehow to say why every man is the same height as the rest or something? I really am sorry if I am coming across as a little bitter, but I have been wanting this for a long time now, and just want to see it done right. Having a Brutor stand eye to eye with an Sebiestor just doesn't seem right to me.

Edited by: Buran Gromazekin on 06/10/2010 13:25:33 It would be great to receive a code or something like that as a result of new avatar creation. For example, I would like to have character looks like me instead of beast-mutant. But my artist skills leave much to be desired. I prefer to make a twin-character and to save code for main-char proper creation. Another option: Someone can make good-nice or good-ugly char. He will create face and send me a code to copy it for my main char creation.

What exactly makes having different height so hard if you can have difference in weight and muscularity, afterall, people do things like walking differently depending on whether they are skinny or obese?
Besides, I'll say that even if having the ability to change your height would lead to some animations/art assets not fitting as perfectly as they would if everyone would be the same height, it would still be a better alternative than having a ridiculous cartoon world where women are height #1 and men are height #2.

Sorry if this is all too obvious for 3d modelers and like, but give some examples of these "lots of things that would be broken if there were a thought out allowance of variable in height"?
Also, where do you prefer to spend that extra money, just curious about that.
Originally by: CCP t0rfifrans
That said, the men are taller than the women.
Do you not acknowledge the travesty of having every single female of the universe, regardless of race or bloodline, shorter than every single male of the universe, regardless of race or bloodline?
Is this the final outcome of at least 4 years of work on this area, where the goal was to make the most realistic avatars yet seen in a game?
If it is, it is truly pitiful.
I can only conclude that having just two heights, one for females and the other for males, will also naturally be the case in World Of Darkness?
Be sure to mention that in the taglines for the game;
"Unparalleled options of customization for amazingly realistic avatars far surpassing anything you have seen so far in games. [EXCEPT FOR HEIGHT WHICH YOU WON'T BE ABLE TO CHANGE AT ALL, BARRING THE CHOICE BETWEEN A MAN OR A WOMAN]."

I'm also curious how badly things could possibly look with some hight variation. From all we know we will only be doing some posing and walking even in the full release, so what could possibly be broken so badly with a little variation in hight? I can see it causing little streching, that doesn't pass close scrutiny, but nothing really gamebreaking. I'm sure this decision wasn't made lightly, but if you could give(or show) some examples, it would make the limitation much more easy to accept.
