So I built myself a nice new computer in February. A few days ago, one of the fans started to make a sound akin to a jigsaw gone bad, and after some finagling I found it to be the fan on the video card. Now this being a Sapphire HD5850, I was used to its absurdly loud noises (damn thing sounds like a leafblower at 10%) but this was something completely different.
Eventually, I decided to see what was wrong with the cursed fan, and the damn thing decided it wasn't going to work at all anymore. Now I'm waiting waiting waiting, for Sapphire to respond to my support ticket about getting the damned thing RMA'ed.
Moral of the story: ATI was good for a while, but as usual they managed to **** something up. Also, Sapphire is a devil company. They never respond to RMA's or extensive verbal abuse, though I have admittedly not tried that last one.
Anybody else experience similar problems with the 5850 or Sapphire cards?

Edited by: Erdgar on 07/10/2010 17:33:50 I've built 3 systems using Vision Tek 5850s, all of them worked out of the box with Vista and 7. I did have to hacksaw bits out of two of the cases to get the things to fit, though. I even dropped a PSU on one of them because I forgot to screw it in. Whatever futuristic shielding is on the Vision Tek cards saved my bacon.
I've done the same with the 3000 and 4000 series and have used mostly ATI cards since they were putting out the Radeon 9700s. Never had to RMA any of them. I had one Nvidia card a long time ago that was DOA, but I don't remember the series. The only other trouble I have had is with older drivers not being totally wiped with both ATI and Nvidia cards.

Lucky Bastard
Dropping the PSU on that one must have given you a slight heart attack.
Meh, I've had mostly good luck with cards, I'm just mad about this one. Also Sapphire varies in quality a lot...

If you are not a troll, then some details are in order. What is the problem with the fan? Do the blades rub on the frame? Is that why it is making so much more noise?

Oh, it really did. No matter how many systems I build I always feel like I'm breaking something if I use more than just a little bit of force. I'll admit, I'm lucky as crap so far on video cards. HDDs are another story.
And that time I reversed the pins for the reset switch and power switch on the motherboard. God, that took about 3 days of troubleshooting to figure out.

YOUZE TROLLIN!
The bearings decided they were shot. As in, the fan was unbalanced, and the vibrations of a fan going several thousand RPMs tends to make loud annoying noises. To be fair, I'm not entirely sure what the fan did, all I know is it made a horrid noise.
And Erdgar(sp?) I know the feeling When making this system, the fan power pins were one pin off on the mobo, which cause a short and melting of some plastic. Heart didn't beat for like ten seconds. Also fun is forgetting to hook up the front USB ports.

Well then. Replace the effing fan and move with your life.

I fail to see how the title has anything to do with this it is YOUR one fail card. I have 32mb cards, 10 years old, used everyday, still working fine.
You went ATI and then with a crap ATI seller... what you expect?
I've never seen a fan problem (of course they happen).

Sapphire is legendary for their ****ty build quality of ATI cards. Hell, I didn't even realise Sapphire ATI cards were still being manufactured.
Your best bet is to get some aftermarket cooler on the card. It'll be quieter, more efficient (if you get a good one) and less likely to break than a stock one, especially from Sapphire. _____________________________________ Haruhiist since December 2008

SOMEbody is a poopy pants.
Anyways, yes Blane, after I RMA this card I'll probably go find some non-crap fan and stick it on there. The chip somehow fried itself once the fan decided to go kaput, so at the moment I am short a video card
The only good thing is that this video card kersplosion thing has "forced" my mother to buy her own goddamn computer, so I'll once again have access to my wonderful piece of awesome. Stupid moving out and thieving parents. That means I might even return to playing EVE... Nah, I'll probably station spin and talk all day long like I normally do.

When are you 'kids' ever gonna realise ATI and NVidia are pro***** fly by nights making quick bucks off of forum *****s that too easily believe all they see and read and experience.?

Edited by: Reiisha on 09/10/2010 04:36:52 I had a sapphire 9600pro and x1600pro, both were pretty good. The only reason i went back to nvidia is because of the ridiculously bad driver support from ati themselves.
(well, that and i loved the gf2mx and gf4ti cards i had before that.)

How did ATI manage to **** this one up? Do they sell their GPUs to Saphirre and tell 'em to use a particular fan model that's too loud and fails within it's MBTF? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sapphire_Technology No. You chose a cheap graphics card manufacturer with bad customer service - you get what you pay for (most of the times).

Saphire HD5870 here and running fine. It is also surprisingly silent.
However, when I bought it, it resisted all attempts of getting it working on a mainboard with NVIDIA chipset (P5N-E SLI). All it ever did was produce ridiculously loud noise and a black screen. After trying out everything I could find on the internet, I got myself a new mainboard (Gigabyte EP45-UD3LR). I had no problems since.
Of course, your video card MAY be broken, but if you can, try it with another mainboard before you RMA it.
Yes, having to buy a new mainboard to get a new graphics card working sucks. But what can you do? Here are some alternatives
[ ] Buy a new mainboard and shut up [ ] Slash your wrist [ ] Suicide bomb ATI/NVIDIA HQ (whoever you think is to blame)
Oh, and DON'T buy a new PSU! This is the first thing people suggest in cases of graphics card trouble, and it is almost always wrong!

I have a PowerColor Radeon HD5850 PCS+, and the fan is very quiet and cools well, and no problems with it so far

stock/reference coolers are ALWAYS a bad idea.
No matter what Nvidia/AMD(ati) tells gfx card producers about minimum necessary cooling solutions, you DON'T want one of those ****ty mini sub-80mm centrifugal fans cooling the hottest part in your entire computer, TRUST ME.
Get a nice gfx card with a custom cooler put on by the manufacturer or get a standard one and slap on an after-market cooler yourself. (don't forget cooling paste and make sure the memory and power mods are properly cooled!) __________________________________________________
