We all see that today fleet formation is an only model of bubble with 'goldfishes' inside. And command ships in the fleet are nothing but a heavy-armored buff node. I want to see them more... Command. Therefore I propose an option of fleet formation, coordinated by these commanders. Starting from a top of a pyramid the fleet commander shall give a preordered position for all wings. This could be arranged with premade figures either with manual control, using some sort of markers like anchoring alignment cube. So, fleet commander shall be positioning wings. Same schematics will be provided to a lower grade by a wing commander and finally, squad commander. For this control the person designated as a Squad/Wing/Fleet Commander can receive a small window like today's watch list with premade figures, i.e. orb, dome, triangle, pyramid, cube, etc., and of course manual control. Every sigle pilot could be provided with visual figure, like a.m. anchoring alignment cube, visible only for him. This shall provide more order in the fleet warps, reduce bumping in a crowd and also will help to rewarp exactly to the point your commander wants to see you, not 'somewhere there' and in common shall divide strategy and tactics on the battlefield allowing fleet commander to command a Fleet instead of commanding a swarm. For all this can be made some module like 'Tactical Positioning Link' of a different grade or appliance, which will bring in both Fleet and Field command ships.

why so complicated? why not let the pilots position them self and just preserve the relative positions during warp? fast foward to 55minutes.

Why complicated? Just now averyone warp in for 0 km at an anchor point with some random offset. Why not to let the Fleet/Wing/Squad commander set this offset manually? More order - less disorder. At least fleet commanders can play way new game staying in EVE: a field strategy where they shall command an organized group of people, not just a swarm of angry lemmings. ----------------------------------------------- We can kill the enemy anyway. I dont really like the fact that the squad/wing/fleet commanders can move my ships on grid. that should be the responsibility of the fleet members. once everyone is in position, they keep their relative position while warping. so you come out of warp as you entered it.

The point is NOONE can move YOUR ship on the grid. The marks are for fleet warp in and following rewarp points. And squad/wing/fleet commanders move only your rewarp point according to their view of the situation on the battlefield. It is up to you to warp to your anchor or to warp to your squad position. IMO it is better than rewarp from let's say logistic pont to a grid rewarp anchor and after that rewarp inside the fleet blob to take your place in a swarm. ----------------------------------------------- We can kill the enemy anyway. This is a great idea.
It's been around since forever. And eon even featured a homeworld formated fleet in 07 as if promising it was on the way...
I don't think ccp can concieve a way to fit it into the game mechanics. Not so much the rubix cube like scaffolding it would take to design a formation that part is easy. I think it has somthing to do with getting every ship in the fleet to align and remain aligned to the positions on the grid as it moved through the gaming environment.
It's funny I'm not sure if I just documented the problem or proposed a solution. Oh well.

Okay, now I see the idea is not completely dead so I would like to say how do I see the formats. 1. All premade formats can be set as a list or menu like a watchlist(mentioned above) and just right mouse click over needed preset to set up a distance offset between ships in formation, same as we do with orbiting something. Same can be done as formation: list of avaliable distances for formation and manual setup. 2. Any S/W/F Commander also should be able to make his own list of setupsm same as bookmarks and use them in accordance to a recent battlefield situation. 3. Majorly for a Fleet Commander and Wing Commanders, they can use some sort of 'free to place' option and shift their positioning marks in a 'realtime mode' as they want to. 4. To avoid major disorder, all ranked commanders should be able to change the position and/or distance offset only to their minions. So Fleetcom can shift Wings but can newer do shift Squads or dedicated pilot. But for more flexibility the higher rank can point some tactical mark on the battlefield or tactical overlay to show the lower rank where he expect every single squad or pilot at a time.
Moreover, if CCP shall do us a favour and resize all ships properly(see some topic around here) this can be very valuable. Bump.

Perfect and just first step to take about command ships (fleet comm version) would be getting their basic lock range up, and it needs to be boosted by a lot.
