IOW, Joe is once again clueless, invests in the wrong thing, and now whines and cries about it on the forums.

The last patch was/is total suck. No doubt about that. SOOOOO much more needs to be done.
Planetary interaction was also lame. I put up 15 colonies on 3 toons, and after a couple months, I just quit. One day I didn't start the extractors, and haven't been back to planetary view since. Lame, boring, horrid click fest and logistics nightmare.
Lag is also an issue, but the bigger issue is the size of the fleets we can now muster. The underlying design of 1 server per system just wasn't designed to have 1000 ships, 5000 drones, 8000 weapons and other repeating modules, all trading ammo with each other, all in the same solar system, on the same grid. It is going to continue to be ab issue regardless of how much they can improve.
There is also an issue of skill inflation. The longer the game runs, the more super capital pulots there will be. Fleets of battleships become fleets of capitals, become fleets of super capitals. If you like dropping your super capital, you're going to go join a fleet of super capital droppers.... Anyone not in a corp with a fleet of super capitals, better stay out of your way.
And since people that do leave the game tend to sell their toons before they do, that skill inflation doesn't ever "clear out".
AND.... another issue.
Let's say you have a player base of 50K, and 10K more joining every quarter. That means 1/6th of players are less than a year old. A year later, you are at 100K with 10K joining per quarter = 1/10th less than a year old. Another year later, 200K with 10K a quarter = 1/20th less than a year old.
The ratio of newbs flying T1 BSs, to 3 year old mining toons in perfect skilled hulks will keep falling.
An aside.... I joined a little over a year ago, recruited into the game by 2 co-workers and 2 ex-coworkers that had started playing 2-3 years before that. Since then, 2 of the 4 have quit playing.
Why? Because they'd gotten bored with the game. Not because the game had gotten worse, but simply because they ran out of things they were interested in trying. This is not CCPs fault for not constantly delivering new content. It is the natural exolution of gaming.
I used to play the heck out of Dune... but it got old. I used to play the heck out of Red Alert, but it got old. I loved Warcraft and Starcraft, but they too got old. I wondered into Civilization and played the heck out of that, but it too got old.
Perhaps EVE getting lame is more about you, and less about them.
Then again, maybe it is about them putting too much effort into getting new audiences, and less about keeping the existing players happy. They certainly have been making a lot of really bad releases recently. Almost as if all their developers are working on Dust and Incarna.

EVE is not dying. There have been some rumors about an unpopular addition to the game, sure, but other then that EVE is still going strong. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Yes wise words, I haven't met a game that could keep me interested for more than 3 years. A game developer can only put so much in a game and once you've seen and done it several times, there's no complete new and exciting things to explore anymore, it's more variations on the same theme. And in spite of everything, EVE isn't a sandbox with endless possibilities.

I resubbed after seeing some of the recent and planned changes, shoots your argument in the foot op. Alliances, friends, enemies, all come and go, because rl comes first; other things happen in people's lives, some people just get bored doing the same old **** day after day, maybe they come back or maybe they don't. However, the number of folks logging now, in is a damn sight bigger than it was, when I stopped playing a year ago. Regards HexCaliber Man kinds greatest Strength and greatest weakness is HOPE

POS fuel prices NEED to drop, they're WAAAAAAAAAY too high right now.
For me to buy myself up to 12 months of fuel from the 5 or 6 months I have in stock would cost me 1.7 billion isk...that is just stupidly high. Before PI it would have only cost around 200-300 million.

One thing I would really like to see is the actual number of players as opposed to the number of accounts.
IIRC there was a (perceived) massive influx of new players after Apocrypha and at some point those who are left of these new players will have subscribed their second (and third, ...) accounts. This effect could lead to the number of accounts growing faster than the actual number of players (which might very well be stagnating/in decline).
How does this matter - an alt pays CCP the same subscription fee as a new player after all? It matters to the players as additional alts don't increase the amount of human interaction (they just split it over more characters) and it matters to CCP as a high saturation of the playerbase with secondary accounts results in this venue of growth no longer being available to off-set future declines in the number of players.
You can grow your number of accounts "unorganically" this way for some time, but it will result in less revenue per account (because many players will want to fund their secondary account via PLEX while the supply of PLEXes is not affected by this measure -> less excess PLEX are being accumulated/stock of PLEX diminishes) and it has to be replaced by "real" growth (in the number of actual players) after some time to keep the game attractive.
edit: imagine you are a car salesman - would you prefer to have one family which owns 3 cars or 3 families which own 1 car each as your customers? The family which already owns 3 cars is much less valuable to you than the 3 other families as it no longer provides much opportunity for future growth.
Actually, I'd rather be the car salesman for the family with 3 cars - that family has more money, their cars are more expensive (and profitable for you), and they'll replace them much quicker than the 3 poor families with one crappy, inexpensive car each who will drive them into the ground for the next 15 years before buying another one.
In addition, the perceived number of alt accounts is much much higher than the actual number, so it's not that big a deal anyway. ---------------------------------------------- I don't have an alt, but there's a main that would be upset if he heard me say that... |
