When a comet passes through a solar system they leave a trail of debris. This can been send on earth as a metor shower as we pass through these debris trails and they burn up in the atmosphere.
These trails can be harvested and the debris taken back to a station and Refined in the same way ore is to produce basic minerals.
The trails can be found by scanning for them, they won't last forever, the orbiting planets will cross them and burn them up. Once a debris trail has been found special 'Debris Harvesters' can be taken to the debris and anchored in place. The harvester will take 24 hors to cycle and will collect the comet debris. The pilot will return to the harvester to collect the contents and if the debris trail is still there can switch on for another cycle.
The Pilot will then return to the station and refine the debris. Depending on the security level of the system depends on the minerals found but even 0.9 systems traces of Zydrine can be found.
The idea gives the ability for lower level industrial players the chance to get small scale access to higher end minerals, but not in quantities that would make it worth while for large scale corporations waste time persuing. |

Edited by: Flapkonijn on 11/10/2010 11:59:38 This idea is nice but make it so you have to scan out the comet first like a anom. It would make it better if it moves through space on a low speed.
The Size/Value should indeed mirror the sec rating of system. And mining on the move would be a fun new thing.
It also should have a sepperate skill with rank 2/3 like "Comet Excavation"
The only issue i see is if it isn't worth a mining corp/alliance their time then why would it be worth a noobies time which can get unlimited veldspar from high sec.
*My 2 Cents*

I like the idea. Anything that adds some new stuff, especially to exploration, I'm pretty much for. I wouldn't think any sort of comet mining should be any sort of material already found. At least nothing found easily. Maybe one of the following.
1. I read a lot of complaints that high end moon goo is fairly unevenly spread and monopolized by the larger alliances. This could be a way to create an alternate method of supply without massively destabilizing the market. Found in null and lowsec only of course.
2. "Dust". Basically the equivalent to what they did with gas and wormholes. It refines to a dust product and some amount of water (comets = ice and dust iirc). The dust could be an ingredient in a new kind of booster.
3. High end drone sites. Part of the drone lore is they're out there somewhere evolving, but we haven't found what would amount to super-hives. Prehaps they evolved to the point that they picked these previously undetectable comets to latch onto and base from. Upgraded AI like sleepers. Maybe the rogue drone equivalent of carriers. Well.. watch this space.
Some time ago, and we are talking a few years, CCP had some comets for us to play around with. They didn't do anything... they were just, well, there. But they stated at the time that they wanted comets to be something we could mine.

Edited by: Jessica May on 14/10/2010 06:19:41 Thanks for your replies, to answer some questions:
The reason to harvest existing minerals it to allow low level/self sufficient players to get access to small quantities of high end minerals (like Zyd and Mex). It's not the aim to stop 0.0 miners. Anyone making BC's, BB etc would find enough minerals in this method. But anyone wanting to make their own Cruiser or a batch of drones etc could use this method to obtain the required high end minerals rather than turning to the markets for a relatively small amount of them.
Saying that, I don't think it's beyond the possibilities that after the refining process that 'new' materials could also be harvested which could go on to be an ingredient in a new product.
Cheers all!

Sounds like a good idea to me. Could create another mini profession.
I guess it could be like this, that all you'd have to do is use system scanner to track it down (no probes needed), warp to it and harvest.
And I assume you want it to be low quantities... Like 1-2hours worth of one hulk to mine in one site like that so that any bigger mining ops would be pointless because a fleet of 10 would just make it vanish within a few cycles and you'd have to move around to find the next one? That is yet another good point of the idea.
I strongly support this product!

interesting idea .. i like it ...would also be nice to see a random comets come up in local so we can warp to ..or maybe they should be found useing scanners
