In my early days i was not aware that these little pictures in the mission description have such a big meaning. I flew lvl 1 and 2 missions for the federation navy an accepted every mission i was offered. I didnt even realize the loss of faction standing with caldari and amarr when i accepted those missions. I fortunately learned about the standing loss through corpmates just in time before i got below -5 and ended up with a faction standing of -3,19 with caldari and -2,19 with amarr. A few days ago i decided to try to reset those standings and flew about 30 lvl 1 missions f++r the imperial navy. I got 2 storylines which each gave me an increase of 0,02 points. I dont know the math behind this mechanic but at this rate it would take 110 storylines and therefor 1750 missions to be neutral with amarr again . I think this is way too much pain and it doesnt make sense that i have to grind hundreds of missions for a faction just because i accidentially blew up a handful of their ships. When the standing is negative 0,01 points per mission or 219 missions would be enough punishment. The pain of compensating negative standings effectively keeps me off trying faction warfare as gaming experience because a standing of -5 in two of the empire faction territories has massive impact on the possibility to participate in high sec incursions. Even when there is a point of holding people back to reset their standings, this issue should be explained to new players as soon as possible. I couldnt find any other threads about this standing grinding issue and i wonder if im the only one who thinks that grinding 1750 missions is way too much for this. Could somebody please explain why exactly we need this grindfest in a game that obviously should be fun in the first term? Any ideas to avoid this stupid grind mechanic? |

There are social skills that mitigate this a fair bit and once you've got to -2 or above (I think it's -2 anyway) you can get lvl2,3 & 4 missions meaning you can get much better faction rewards for each storyline mission.
Then there are COSMOS missions that give you faction standing although I don't think you can start them until you're at 0 or above (again, this is from memory so I may get corrected).
You can't get faction standing by doing someone else's missions with them but you can get corp standing so if you know someone with high standing with the corp you're doing your lvl 1 missions with you can get them to take you through a load of lvl 4 missions to get your corp standing up so when you get your faction standing to -2 or above you can move straight into lvl4 missions.
You can do the Sisters of EvE epic arc which I believe gives you faction standing with any faction at the end so this would help.
The lvl4 empire epic arcs also give net positive faction standing I believe so they're worth doing also.
There may be other ways to increase faction standing as well although I can't think of any off the top of my head.
I had the same problem. I'd completely screwed my faction standing with two of the factions. I used the social skills and a bunch of lvl1 missions to get to -2 and then worked up from there with lvl4's and epic lvl4s and now have all 4 factions into half decent positive values. It can be done.
EDIT - The most important thing is to stop taking missions that will make the situation worse. |

The COSMOS thingy the other person is peaking of are a one time deal for each faction. You can find them here.

True. And i hope somebody of the new player experience team reads this. It would be highly desireable to protect newbies from those accidents. Would be great to have a notification window when such missions are offered that indicates that there will be a massive standing loss. However, maybe it would be better to get rid of those missions from regular secuity agents entirely. Who wants to do faction warfare can do this by joining the militia. It would help newbies a lot to be not confused by such things in their first weeks.
Nonetheless i think this grinding mechanic seriously needs an overhaul or different ways to be avoided.

I can understand where you're coming from but I think the logic is that everyone has a "faction" to a point. When you gain faction standing in one faction you tend to gain a little in that faction's ally, lose a bit in their enemy and a little bit in their enemy's ally, I believe. CCP are gently pushing people towards choosing a side with this mechanic which is outside faction warfare. Faction warfare is a rather extreme version of this I think (although I've never participated).
I wholeheartedly agree that this should be explained to new players, though. It is frustrating although I ended up making a lot of isk getting my faction standing back up again and can now do all 4 faction's epic lvl4 missions so I can't complain really.
It depends. If you hate missions then it's a painful mechanic but then if you hate missions, as long as you've not got any to -5, it doesn't really make a lot of difference to you.
The ultimate is moving to nullsec or into wormholes. At that point the empire factions mean nothing to you so it really doesn't matter. |
