Hi chaps, I'm going to start playing Magic the Gathering card game.
I have no cards, but have played a few games. I'm not fussed about what colour(s) I collect but I would rather avoid black as one of the friends I'll be playing against uses a black deck.
Do any of you have advice on how to start? Should I just go for any random ebay card collection? Thaaaaaanks!

I have not played since Ice Ages so I can offer no information on the subject as it has to do with the current state of game play, but this seems to be something you may want to read.

I do seem to recall though that my ex beat my black deck almost every time with a white/green deck :(
Saying that though, she did have a Wrath of God or two in her deck.
Edit to add: oh, she had a Serra Angel too... ===================================== It smells of spoon! ===================================== |

Don't do it man...
Really that stuff takes years to come off...
I begging you, think back to our good times in blue rep...
Anyway, if you're playing 'anything goes' magic then I'd try and buy some bulk cards off ebay to get you started and then workout how far you want to go with that game.
If you're friends are more towards the type 2 tournament scene then I'd say do some research on the current pre-built decks and use them as a base for playing.

k, as an honest person and former Magic the Gathering gamer, before you delve into the utter darkness of this strange game , I will point out some things first.
1)Be willing to shell out $$$ to keep up to date and competitive (it's a business after all, and game keeps being updated constantly, rendering old cards obsolete)
2) The Game is strange in that due to its constant recycling of old cards and mechanics, stuff you used to do or enjoy will no longer be viable a couple expansions ahead
3) Unless you plan to play it with a couple other more social outcasts, not many people will enjoy the "old" cards and play with you using those "old" decks that cost you over 400$.
4) Get to know your local area hobby supplier and see if they host "Friday Night Magic" , this is essential as you will meet potential magic buddies, friends and nemesis on these fun gatherings.
5) Once you have the grasp of the game, be advised to stick to what you find fun instead of what the most "popular" deck/mechanic is atm. Why? because it makes the game "cookie cutterish". Your local area will probably flavour a certain type of deck mechanic/combo. Be bold and use something else. Will begin training you in the intricacies of counterdecks/specialist decks. Magic is despite the money grubbing stuff from WotC, a solid highly strategic game.
6)LEARN TO THINK outside the box. Best magic players I have known have created incredibly fun and different decks by seeing the synergy between probably unrelated cards. This is where magic excels at instead of being a summon monster deck where you vomit forth creatures nonstop (cough, green).
7)You say you want to avoid Black, I say try Black, and blue and green and white and red. Try them all, it doesnt matter , try anything. Explore the game, and how to do it without shelling the BIG BUCKS? make printouts! Many players I Know make printouts of their dream deck and try it over and over for several games against everybody to fine tune it. Enter the MAGIC SET EDITOR <--- It's a sourceforge based program that lets you create printouts for Magic (and many other card games).
Once these players finetune their decks, they go official and ORDER the cards singly, either by the WEB or local hobby store/trade between players. When I was a Magic user I used CARDKINGDOM, but many choices out there, tho I can assure you Cardkingdom is pretty much the best, or was a until a couple years ago. Havent bought from then in a while.
8) Play, Play and Play again. Games can be short, and the more you play the better you can learn the Core setup of the TURN PROCESS. Once you get the grip of how to resolve the "stack" and what or which effects cancels, annuls or negates others, you just "got" magic >:D
9) Did I mention Friday Night Magic? Also, play with a lot of people besides your group of friends, as I have noticed than when you play with the same people your skils degrade as you already know what to expect and get mind lazy
10) Disregard any of these tips at your leisure, you are free to play with whoever you want, whenever and whichever your like hehe, magic is fun, but bear in MIND BEFORE GOING into it, that it can be a bit expensive hobby (so try the printouts for "rogue" games for a while if you dont want to shell the bucks for them and find people willing to play with you with your dummies)
11) HAVE FUN overall! I remember I ended up enjoying doing these 200+ decks of non official cards/old expansion cards and blasting away the hours with my friends just chatting, playing and having plain fun. This was the time when it became harder for venezuelans to buy stuff abroad,(due to legal tender limitations and the prohibition from owning USA dollars without asking govt for permission) so magic pretty much died in my city due to it, but that's another story
Cheers! ---

I tried to play competitively but I'd rather sleep in than wake up and go to tournaments on Sunday morning. didn't stop me from sinking lots of $$$$ into the game though. had a few tourny quality decks (2 or 3 standard, and was working on a legacy deck had my force of will set, and was starting to buy dual lands) and didn't ever play anything more competitive than arena (and a few FNMs but them was all booster drafts) was working full time then, didn't really have anything else to spend the money on.
star city usually has pretty good articles, and if you can't find the card on ebay they usually have it. ebay is the best place for cards imo.
I really liked my Tamanoa deck in the Kamigawa, Ravnica, coldsnap standard. played it against a legacy goblins deck and kept up for a while. fun to see a bunch of goblins get pyroclasmed and then gaining a bunch of life.
and I wouldn't avoid a color because a friend plays it, I like to go rainbow and have 4 or 5 decks at a time.
my problem is most of the "fun" decks I do *cough*Rabid wombat*cough* are easily defeated by something like a bounce spell, or a kill spell.
as for starting I think I'd pick up one of the premade decks and then a few booster packs. a random ebay collection might be fun too.

Just start collecting and play whatever you like.
I got decks from all colors (though i usually don't have white in any of my decks) and i'm having fun with whatever - Depends on the idea behind the deck more than the color. Land destruction, counter, weenie, burn, combo... Though some colors lend themselves better to certain strategies you can do a lot with any color.
I do really have to get some more cards for a proper artifact-only deck.

One thing you'll soon realize is that - no matter the Magic expansion you buy cards from and the particular mechanics it introduces - each colour has a few distinct themes associated with it, and that you may favour one or another in general according to your personal playstyle, once you have some experience with the game.
For instance, if you like hitting your opponent with simple but effective direct damage spells, you'll like Red. If you like countering your opponent's spells, making him discard, or other control tricks, Blue is the colour. If you'd rather focus on bringing out big creatures, and then making them even bigger and deadlier, Green. Black packs a lot of tricks you can play while sacrificing creatures and messing around with your graveyard. And so on.
Building your first deck from scratch is a bit daunting, but it can be very rewarding, and if you'd like reading some guidelines and a bit on the theory behind Magic and deck engineering, here are some useful links to get started:
- Wizard's Daily MTG features several columns on different topics, such as analyzing current Top Decks played in tournaments, Building on a Budget, or simply messing around with fun ideas on Serious Fun.
- ManaNation has been posting a lot of interesting articles on Magic theory, including some important concepts to keep in mind when starting to design decks, such as the Rule of Nine, Mana Curves (more here), Frameworks, and other concepts such as Card Advantage and so on and on.

I have thousands of Magic cards.
I have not used them in 14 years.
Out-black his black deck. Show him you mean business.
