Why are profiles set to public by default?
The default should be everything private. Or is this a ploy to make everyone login once so you can brag about how many people 'use' this thing? -- ] If you find yourself in a fair fight, somebody screwed up. |

Do we really need to log in after every patch to disable any new settings on eve gate? Make it opt in rather than opt out.
Also, why do we need to go through eve gate to get to the forums? I can understand that you think/hope that we will stop on the way through due to more exposure to it but it is not useful.
Eve gate currently lets us check mail out of game and look up characters, which we will do if we want but don't make us use it if we don't want to.

Public profiles are a completely unnecessary invasion. Why do I have to protect the privacy of my profile in this game????? Big thumbs down! Troubling, CCP.

Good news is that I'll again be able to add The BIG Lottery winners to the address book of BIG Games.
The bad news is that TornSoul still has 1200+ in the address book(*), and as such pretty much can't use it at all anymore...
So once more.... up it to 2048 please...

Making Eve:Gate useful as a tool for public event organisers would be (using the technical term) awesome.

well maybe like with reinforced nodes, they could make it so you can petition to have an increased address book for an event/contest?

About the forum,
will you add a post count next to the character name & picture? I feel like this would help to build a forum reputation. Also, it would be nice to be able to rate a user (+1/-1) so that we can punish trolls and reward people that are actually helpful.

or if you still feel bad about having forum post count (I remember a long time ago a dev posted they didn't like it because everyones opinions should be equal.
how about a hybrid?
No post count, but some sorta post level? based on how many posts they have been thumbed up and down?
you know, like the TED talks website. Every user has a number which equals all the likes and dislikes of his posts.
then make it so people can thumbs up or dumbs down a post. Now the trick is don't show how many thumbs up or down a post has. But show how many the user has total.
Then it's not based on post count, but on the quality of said posts.

This. Also when it happens we should be able to set alert words. So if somebody uses one of your alert words the browser plays a sound. That way one could have EveGate running in the background, while doing something else, while getting an audio notification when somebody posts your name, or whatever words you want to be notified about.

What's up with more of this opt-out BS? Why am I being forced to be a part of your social networking experiments and corporate epeen waving?
Having a grace period is just rubbing it in. You're outright admitting that you know that it's not in everyones best interests, but you're still forcing the default anyway.

I only see two issues here:
1) The one mention in almost every post "Why are profiles set to public by default?" 2) I hope the monitoring of the systems improves over the existing eve gate. It seems to rely on General Discussion forum posts telling you about it at the moment.
Having said that, I like the ideas and concept. I'm looking forward to a functional and reliable update to eve gate and long may it continue to evolve.

THIS!
I can't understand why anybody wantz his data seen from the public - and I can in no way see why a setting to hide those data should be set NO by default. This is not the way anyone should go.

Stop ****ing around with privacy settings. Default should be "private". I should NOT have to log into your stupid website to protect MY privacy!
You best be trolling. But given the obvious enjoyment of most forum users to screaming at CCP your probably not. Did you even read that thing? It states that 'public' means, people not locked into Gate will be able to see the same things that people can see who do log into Evegate. And you really thing there is just one person out there who gives anything about your characters infotmation who doesnt have an Account that he could log into Evegate? Riiiight.
Apart from that, its a game. They arent showing your home address. They arent showing your name. They are showing those informations about your internet spaceships character to non-Eve-players which you have decided to show Eve-players. Your a crazy person. And so is everybody flaming about this completely unimportant public/private thing. Probably as me now :( And why is there still nothing that sets content apart from signature? Is that intentional or technically imposible? |

In other words "public" is short hand for "availble for bot scraping."
Quote: And you really thing there is just one person out there who gives anything about your characters infotmation who doesnt have an Account that he could log into Evegate? Riiiight
In other words, the "public" setting serves absolutely no useful purpose whatsoever and shouldn't even exist.
Quote: Apart from that, its a game.
Yes, it's a game, where occasionally people are intent on winning, which often involves knowing as much as possible about your opponent, which in turn means that people will happily do large data collection operations to get that slight edge. If people want to give out this valuable information to their game opponents, they should be the ones making that choice, not have the choice foisted upon them and have to jump through hoops (no matter how tiny) in order to change that choice.
"Public" should always default to "no", no matter where it appears. Always. No exceptions.
And CCP are stupid if they don't set that default correctly. Literally stupid ù no hyperbole, no trolling, just plain old stupid. ùùù ôIf you're not willing to fight for what you have in ≡v≡à you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.ö ù Karath Piki |

Features and Ideas Post (Oh no!)
Can you make the training queue skills link to wiki.eveonline.com's associated item-database page for the skillbook? I find myself wasting way too much time at work planning out skill queuses and changes for when I get home, and I usually do with with both EveGate and wiki.eveonline, or eveiverse.com open in another tab, because for the life of me, sometimes I just can't remember the specific features of a given skill. Without the links I need to search for each item I have a question on.
It would be slick to just, you know, click on the skill name and link to the associated item-database article on wiki.eveonline.com It's a small time savings, but still desired.
kinda like the 'show info' right click option on in-game items. consistency across platforms is nice.
Thanks!

Edited by: TheLostPenguin on 21/10/2010 16:29:10 Edited by: TheLostPenguin on 21/10/2010 16:28:36 Really CCP, just WHY? Did you somehow miss the truckload of posts complaining about when you set everything to public by default last time? Has nobody looked up the figures for % of active accounts that set everything to private within the first lets say 2 weeks of spacebook first launching? Making a silly decision that serves only to annoy a fair bunch (probaly a large majority) of your customers once is pretty silly, to then go and do the exact same thing a short while later is just plain dumb.
That said it's nice to see a bit of iteration on more of the background parts of EVE, if you just stop making silly decisions like this you'll get a far warmer response to all your hard work, as it is you're just spoiling things over one issue.
ps as someone else mentioned please someone at CCP grow a pair and come in here to explain your thinking behind this, sure you'll get flamed to hell but at least have the balls to openly stand by and explain your logic instead of falling back on the old wall of silence tactic that ****es people off about as much as the original decision.

Will you preserve 100% of the existing content when moving to the new forum?
The plan is to keep the existing forum up in read-only mode so you can reference/copy over the content and we will start the new forums up from scratch. Porting over the content from a wholly different database structure was a nightmarish consideration to say the least
Nice to see that at least someone from CCP is responding to the feedback brought up in this topic. But Rhayger why no reply to the issue that is brought up the most in this topic?
In case your wondering what I mean it has to with "public by default".

I just checked your Gate page after locking in and i have to say, there is not much valuable information. And everyone who is willing to create a crawler to gather information can log into Gate before he launches it. This feature basically changes nothing.
My whole point is that i believe most people here just see 'public' and put their flame suit on. Im only trying to explain what the devblog says and that there is no reason to go crazy. And it only says that public means that people without an account can see what those after loging in can see anyways. Why CCP decides to default to public is beyound my understanding as they got to have expected those tears. And i dont care at all tbh as the feature changes absolutely nothing. And why is there still nothing that sets content apart from signature? Is that intentional or technically imposible? |

One important thing that I hope you fix, is page refreshes. Every button I click on the current EveGate refreshes the screen and it flashes a white screen while the page reloads. Haven't we moved past this?
Also, will you be using html5 to make our experience smoother? I hope so, as it's supported on all platforms now.

haha
but yeah I love it : )
in fact I'm happy with eve-search having post count, but a user rating would be brillant. maybe even let users block out posters with really really bad ratings?

CCP is not releasing any previously private information with these "public" profiles. I don't think you guys understand this issue completely. You have no right to privacy with information that is publicly available and has been for a long time. i dont even understand why ccp introduced this feature in this way because there is zero element of privacy involved with this. but now people have read the word "privacy" and it means something different to them despite the specific facts of the issue.
literally all the current sc****r programs for eve gate would have to change NO settings to get around this privacy restriction. it is a laughably terrible security measure, that guards nothing of value and can be bypassed with zero effort.
