Yeah yeah, I lost my ship and pod. That's not what this is about.
I want to know what the fit is and how ya'll do it because it's pretty terrible and I'd love to be able to do it myself.
I've tried with a domi all SB's in the high's and about 5.5km's from the gate but have never been successful. How do you all setup for it? Where do you position yourselves on the gate? Can I lite off the SB and then get closer to the gate or will the SB's deactivate?
Thanks!

8x smartbomb, moderate tank, good warp-in... maybe a wcs or 2. Not exactly rocket science.

A domi isn't the best option but could work. For Gallente a megathron would be a wiser choice due to increased cap, high slots, cpu, ehp and well ... everything, with little additional cost. You basically need to be able to 1.) get as many smartbombs off as possible when a ship is incoming, 2.) Tank sentry fire / aggro till you can GTFO.
Ideally pick a system with low pilot numbers but a high number of jumps (check map or dotlan for this info) with only 2 gates, the implication being that it is a common route for traffic, aka a pipe.
Setup bookmarks inline from one gate to the other as close to the gate as is permitted.
When traffic enters scan for incoming ships that are able to be bombed.
The technique relies on the fact that even with warp to 0, ships tend to land between 1k - 2.4k off the actual gate.
Smartbomb as they are coming on grid, not as they land.
All being well if they simply warped from gate to gate in a low ehp ship then they will asplode.
There are more advanced things you can do such as setting up close warp in bookmarks but this is the basic technique. Also consider alts for scooping, scouting or even covering the other gate in system. Having ships actually in the same grid as the gates sets off alarms for wiser players hence suggesting close range warp in bookmarks. It also helps if the two gates are beyond scanning range of each other to catch out those too lazy to warp to a celestial before continuing their journey. ~_~

Lady Spank,
That is one outstanding response and exactly the information I was looking for. It is most appreciated.
Thank you.

This is why you should warp to a belt or planet (pref a belt) then to a gate in low sec. 0.0 is ofc the same. You stand a massive chance at not getting caught in a sb camp.

What spank said, plus stabs
You don't need any dmg mods, and it annoys the crap out of people when you warp off tackled. --- Witness epic fleet battles in Dominion

If only gates would put people randomly in the target system...
this is why I use wormholes to get around
