in the MMO industry, there is usually only one version of the world.
one version, where everything is the same. the same speed which characters move and attack at. the same values for a characters defenses. the same operation for crowd constrol abilities. the same EVERYTHING.
and when one of these things are changed, the change is forced upon all players in the entire game. with only the developers having a choice.
the above, is like a tree that has only one branch. a tree with one branch, cannot collect as much sunlight. it can only give the player base one play experience. and no matter how thoughtfully this one branch is placed, it can never have enough potential or depth, to make any one player "completely" happy. let alone make the entire player base happy !
and when this one branch is changed, the change is more likely to make everyone angry, than anything else !
this one version of the world method, is nothing less than a troublesome bottleneck. it is as dull as having only one type of music to listen too. or having only one type of art to look at. or having only one emotion to feel.
in nature, a fully grown tree, often has 12 or more branches. and each branch has 12 or more sticks. and each stick has 12 or more twigs. and each twig might have 3 or more leaves. with the result being 5,184 or more leaves ! and countless ways to reach each leaf !
instead of having one branch, with 7 or 8 leaves on it,we should do what nature does. because nature has had billions of years of player feedback, to improve itself. and is thus the oldest, most developed game world, know to mankind.
we should not have one version of the world, with 7 or 8 possible endings. we should have 12 versions of the world. and each version of the world, should have 12 smaller branches, which lead players down different paths.
the differences between one branch and another branch, would be small. just like the difference between one branch on a tree, and the branch next too it, are small.
the differences could be as small as a 5% faster move rate on one branch, than on the branch beside it. or a 5% damage per hit on one branch, than on the branch beside it. or a 5% difference in the intensity of a debuff. or ANY small little difference that you want. even if you have to invent 2 different things, just so they can be different from each other !
the most important part, is that the player can choose which branch to play on. so that the player can enjoy whatever setting they prefer. so that the players choices, can have more consequences.
and the player base will LOVE having every single option. where the player base would otherwise loath it, if they were forced to have one option, and be denied the other option.
this concept, is not one big thing. thinking in terms of one big thing, is what created the one branch nightmare in the first place. this concept is thousands of small things. just like life is made out of thousands of small things. just as we walk on top of millions of small grains of dirt, instead of walking on top of one giant rock.
as you think about this message, do not focus on how it is impossible. because thinking that something is impossible, uses far more energy, than it gives benefit back. which is the definition, of the word "worthless".
focus on how it can be implemented. tell yourself that for every single branch that is added, more meaning is added to the game. that one branch more, than there was before, is one branch closer to having built a great game !
praise yourself for every single twig worth of option. because every twig worth of option, is one vast step closer, to the best possible game.
if the option seems worthless, then attach it to a branch anyway. even if just temporarily. because having a worthless option, is infinitely more meaningful, than having no option. and because every small twig worth of option, makes player skill more of a factor, in the game. |

so you want wormhole space effects... everywhere?
yeah I'm cool with that, might be fun to have each constellation to have a different feel to combat.

You have more patience that I do. After the first couple lines I came to the conclusion that the OP has no idea what a branch is in code speak. --Vel

Which, as far as I can tell, isn't what he was talking about anyway.
I'm pretty sure he wants multiple servers with effects that are server-local. Or something.
But before reading the blob of text, I thought he was talking about code branches too. - Paknac Queltel

OP definatly has no clue as to what a branch and a shard is.....
Also he appearantly doesn't know what made EVE what EVE is and what makes it better than most MMO's out there

In essense it sounds like getting rid of the sandbox and having instancing where people could set the difficulty or other settings for their instance, or at least choose their instance based on what they prefered like maybe going through the instance of the low sec system that didn't have the pirates in.
Terrible idea that would ruin player-player interaction.

Trees are bad m'kay. Their pollen is a lethal weapon designed to eradicate all animal life on earth in it's early evolutionary stage.

Stop taking films staring Marky Mark as fact --

I have no idea who that is or what films you are talking about. I just know I get a stuck nose and my eyes itch when there is a lot of pollen in the air. Soon it will be an inability to breathe and bleeding from my eyes. So don't lecture me, I know how evolutioning works.

im pretty sure there is only one way to reach each leaf on a tree, everything stems from one point.
if that makes a difference to this massive mess of a metaphor...

Having actually managed to read your post I have afew points to make
1. These "differences" you ask for are already in place, they are called wormholes
2. Please, for the love of God learn to write in a fashion that won't cause peoples eyes to bleed or their brains to turn to mush.
3. Go back to WoW, as its quite plain from the terminology you use, that that is where you came from.
4. Don't let the door hit you on the way out.

TLDR:
EVE became succesful because of what it is, so lets turn it into a WoW in space so it can become even more succesful.
Senior manager logic. OP probably works at EA.
