ok this is not meant to be a political discussion!!
I was looking at holiday destinations, and switzerland came up, I suggested it to the girlfriend, who is vegitarian, and she says they hate vegitarians?!
On further reading it would seem, they do not understand them, and do not do meals for vegitarians.. other than omlette!?
can anyone shed any light on this?! is this true? or one of those myths?!

In general, most of Europe doesn't care all that much about "vegetarianism" (don't eat animal slaughter products), and much less so about "veganism" (don't eat ANY sort of animal products). There should be no problem getting a vegetarian meal anywhere (although the selections might be limited)... but it will probably get a bit weird if you want a vegan meal, since I don't think the latter will be very tasty due to lack of experience. If that's considered "hate", well... no comment.
Side-note : vegetarian, sure, why not... in practice, I could be considered a borderline vegetarian 2/3 to 3/4 of the year... but... vegan ? I mean, I could refrain from eating meat without much effort, but, seriously, how can one stand surviving while NOT eating any eggs, milk or various dairy products either ? I'd go bonkers.

You can find some vegetarian resturants over here, or just try to further google "vegetarians in Switzerland". |

Your girlfriend could just wander into any store and buy a cucumber or something to satisfy her creepy meat-free desires. I think it's idiotic to assume that a whole country could hate vegetarians. Recommend slapping some sense into her with some raw bacon. -

Yeah, since all vegetarians eat only cucumber and grass. You're a real smart one, aren't you? Come on, if more plp are vegetarians, the more meat is left over for you meatheads. Give it up. |

I hear vegetarians have small pen1ses and have 10% less IQ than meat-eaters. Is this why Switzerland is a cool place? Plus they're not allowed grass as this would be stealing from grazing bovines.

No, I have breakfast issues that keeps me from eating anything the first 2-3 hours I'm awake. I also could use some more excercise |

Being an actual vegetarian myself, I could not agree more. I could never live without cheese.
And FYI, I have no particular reason for being vegetarian other than that is how I was raised, and I maintain it out of a matter of principle. Having said that, I would happily eat a steak if I was trapped on a desert island.

I was on a vegan diet for five years. Pretty easy to be honest.
Most people have a recipe rotation of about five dishes they tend to eat (with a bit of variation). When I used to get asked "What do you eat???? !!!" I'd generally be able to prove I actually ate far more variety of food than people with their non-restrictive meat eating diets.
That said, don't go to France as a vegan and expect to eat out without some foreplanning. Switzerland could well be the same. ~_~

Confirming that everyone hates vegans.
The most annoying are those that have these twig-like kids that never get meat and then they keep wondering out loud to me why they're so short and always sick. God that makes me want to slap some sense into them.

I dont understand why anyone would hate vegetarians when, breadcrumbed and lightly pan-fried and served with a glass of Chilean Pinot, they are one of the most delicious treats.

I spent quite some time in Switzerland during my late teens, but back then I wasn't a vegetarian so I cannot say how easy it was to be one over there. I doubt the Swiss "hate" vegetarians though, but then again it may be the case as it is in Spain - my country of residence - where vegetarians are simply uncommon, and thus when you go out to eat to restaurants there are few available meat-free choices. It's nonetheless viable, even if limited.
I'd be very surprised anyway if anyone would look at you funny in Switzerland just because you don't want to eat meat, and there are some characteristically Swiss dishes that are vegetarian-friendly, such as cheese fondue, rosti, raclette, etc... I do know from first-hand experience that in Germany (at least in the Southern part close to Switzerland) there are a lot of vegetarians, and anywhere you go you'll find plenty of veggie options, and in the UK it was the same.

Edited by: Netheranthem on 21/10/2010 22:15:23 Edited by: Netheranthem on 21/10/2010 22:14:18 I laughed. And yes I'm swiss. Saying that swiss hate vegetarians is as stupid as being one. Wait... oh snap! So now I had my daily joke, you shouldn't have much trouble finding some vegetarian meals (though you might get pasta in more limited restaurants), it's pretty much diverse usually, also I don't see any situation where a vegetarian could be "hated".

On a serious note I'm sure that even restaurants that don't serve vegetarian brand meals would at least have salads and possibly vegetable only side dishes.

Thinking a whole country hates vegetarians is not really a sound conclusion. They may not cater to vegetarians, but I am pretty sure you can find steamed vegetables at most restaurants

A lot of the traditional meals are vegetarian (Fondue/Raclette) or even vegan (Roesti). There's even a few restaurants that specialize in that. If you're in Zuerich, check out Hiltl and if you need more Switzerland tips just send me an evemail ingame...
When are you planning on going?
I was vegetarian for 2yrs before seeing the light, and every basic supermarket features special vegetarian products such as "fake meat" that actually tastes quite good...so good in fact, that even though I eat meat now, I sometimes still grab me some "fake meat".
If you're going skiing, rent an apartment with a kitchen...that way, you always have an alternative (plus, it's cheaper than a hotel). But every single restaurant should be able to make you something better than an omelette ;) _______________

I just made dinner for my girl and it was steak. :-)
No joke here get yer minds out of the damned gutter!
I have seen it before, the "meat is murder" crowd. I could tell any one of them that the new housing development they moved into recently (before the housing market crash) was a hunting preserve, ranch, or forest. Does not really dawn on them.
So they suck on that sodium flouride that messes up their thyroids, suck on that high fructose and aspartame to mess up their ability to not turn sugar into fat (or use the fat), and take the vaccines that cause autoimmune responses that further wreck the metabolism.
And then they sit there and wonder why they are fat - some of them blame red meat.
Some red meat is to blame, depending on where you get it. In the USA, most red meat was formerly a dairy cow that was pumped full of hormones and milked around the clock for a few years until they push it up the chute of a slaughter house with a forklift. Yeah, you eat that meat, you are what you eat, and we have no shortage of fat cows (American women). So they stop eating meat, but continue on with all the other soft-kill and go on, eventually with diabetes and obesity (diobesity) or a cancer or two being a big fat cash cow for the medical industrial complex.
All the while irritating some men, not knowing they could do better, with this "I don't eat meat" crap.
