I'm a professional carebear and ever since you could buy gtcs with isk I've never paid any real money to play this game. All of the other pro carebears that I've interacted with during the last few years don't pay real money to play either.
So.......the question is.......who's handing over real money to pay my monthly subscription?.......and possibly more pertinantly...are they happy about doing so?

It would be interesting to know what percentage of accounts are actually funded by plex/gtc
some people must be buying serious amounts of isk

I don't do any stupid pve but I too would like to thank the various people that pay for 7 plexes a month for me to continue playing this game with too many alts without spending a penny or running a single mission.

I've only bought PLEX once (couple of weeks ago). Since I can't play more than a few times a week, I can't really make a whole lot of ISK. Especially considering I'm still a total nub, and still kind of stink at this game. And actually, after doing it, I think it was a great decision, because now I really don't give a damn how many ships I loose, or if I get podded and loose my implants. So yea, I'm happy about it. I'd rather pay a measly $35 bucks now and again so I don't have to mindlessly mine or mission run when I do get a few precious moments in the game.
My bet is that most of the people selling PLEX are like myself. We work long hours, and have families, which attenuates our game time. PLEX allows us to just focus on having fun, and not having to worry about spending hours just earning ISK.

I do, to the tune of $0.58 (US) per day--not including what CCP calculates is my portion. I play about 4-6 hours per week, and don't care if you think I'm happy about it or not.

Edited by: Spurty on 22/10/2010 18:24:41 I'm now a dedicated buyer of plexes.
I tried level 4s this week. Took me over 1 hour to complete WC level 4 looting and salvaging everything.
I think I made 20mill total from that 1 hour. Pathetic.
Plexes all the way from here, so could be me planting plexes on the market for you to buy up. Loving the current prices.

6 accounts, all on 1 year paid subscriptions. Don't care if I make 1 isk a month between all 6 accounts. Need a new BPO ? Buy some PLEXs, sell them, buy BPO. Need a couple bil for Cap ship skill books ? Buy some PLEXs, sell them, etc. Great thing about working for a living (especially where I work). Lots of $$ to spend 'cause I have little else to spend it on. I pay to play, not play to pay.

Easy answer. It's all the noobs or newer players that buy GTC's. There is a massive endless army of them. If Vets were selling them they would charge alot more isk! OK and maybe alot of older players who think the isk making mechanics in this game are boring as hell and take FAR to much time. The pve sucks and the timesinks are many..to many.
I'd like to see GTC for Isk removed from the game. CCCP should lighten up and make the game more fun and accessible so people don't want to buy stupid GTC's. But I'm sure they love the $$$
Oh btw

I have a single account and I pay for it in real money because all forms of serious ISK making in EVE is, to me, about as interesting as watching grass grow or paint dry. I run a few missions and complexes (not very lucky with those) here and there because I have to, not because I want too. Thank various gods and more than a few demons that the PvP in EVE is so exciting and unparalleled compared to any other game. ____________________

Check your journal, that'll show you the char name you bought the PLEX from. Then you can evemail them and ask if they are happy about. Suggestion: Remove the "new topic" button from everywhere apart from the list of topics section within a subforum.
That'd save those with chronic hand/eye coordination some face. |

I pay for the game using plex. I play for 2 - 3 hours a night four or five nights a week depending on alcohol consumption, (I never play when drunk, it's too expensive :p) and my sad social life and can easily make 500m a month.
Will never go back to using real money to pay for Eve.

I pay for my account yearly, which translates into not even a full day of real life work. Then if I did spend the next year just training skills without earning one ISK, I still feel I would come out ahead. Compared to some of my other yearly expenses in fun and games, Eve is quite cheap on the pocketbook.

I'm worth about 35b but I'm more or less retired from eve now. Just waiting for Cataclysm to come out tbh.
Incidentally 35b is pretty much chickenfeed in hardcore pve circles. Like i'm actually quite poor.

It's an intresting question, and i don't think the op meant to offend ppl who actually pay for the game. Take a note that what you find boring or just plain sh*t like mining, can be fun for other ppl. I thought about paying for my gametime with isk as a challange since im playing eve, and probably wouldn't even have started playing if there wouldn't have been GTC trading.

I buy a GTC every month, convert it to 2 plex, put one on my account and sell the other for ISK. The reason is I dont get to log in as often as I like and when I do I want to PVP which isnt the most profitable of enterprises and I can afford to $35 a month (hooray for exchange rates).

Consider how long does it take you to earn the isk to pay for your plex what we're at like 700mil for a GTC atm (nice) so going with the 70mil/hour that many PVE'ers claim we're talking 10 hours of playtime to pay for 2 months of service. Now that GTC costs around ~$35 so that means that your hourly rate assuming you are just paying using L4s is $35/10 or $3.50 an hour.
Now I don't know about you but I make about $45 an hour. So I'd be better off working an hour of overtime and buying a GTC that I'd be spending 10 hours running missions.
Admittedly if you just like running missions and you don't have something else you want to spend your isk on (like blowing up ships) then you pay someone like me 700mil isk or so and I pay for your gameplay for a month. I then take that 700mil isk and buy a bunch of ships and modules from some industrialist so I can go out and destroy ships (mine and others)
I'd far rather spend my in game time PVPing than carebearing so until I figure out how to make enough isk to support myself that I don't find mind-numbingly boring I will continue to pay the subscriptions of the little carebears who do all the grunt work to enable my fun.

The more or less stable market offeres the possibility for all players to "play to pay" or "pay to play". The fact that experience and teamplay makes this game worth playing and gives you the needed advantage is the only fact that this system works. One of the few games where "bling" isn't a guaranteed win.

It's not even necessarily that people selling plex find that stuff boring. Many Eve players have full time jobs and families. They consider themselves lucky if they get 2-3 hours of playing time per week. So they schedule a weekly corp/alliance mining or pvp operation into their busy schedule and that is as much time as they have. So if they lose an expensive ship on an op, they don't want to spend the next two months of playing time grinding for the ISK to make it up. So they buy a GTC and sell it. One plex may cover them for several months or more of playing. So they can mine or pvp or pve when they want without worrying about grinding for ISK. You add up the thousands of players doing that and it's a lot of plex being sold. And that's just normalish people selling plex just to cover minor expenses. It doesn't cover people with lots of money to blow who just want to say they have billions in their wallets or who lose billions in ships every month.

Edited by: Pesky LaRue on 22/10/2010 20:44:22 I also happily pay my sub each month on multiple accounts so that when I log in I can enjoy myself and not feel like I'm grinding for cash. RL is just way too busy and I work way too hard and spend way too much time with my gf & kid & dogs to want to waste any of the time I have in EvE 'working' for cash. I usually have enough on hand to pay for 2 of my accounts but I'd much rather spend that cash on stuff ingame to have fun with.
Might just be me being 'old fashioned', but I've also never been into buying ISK. I kind of feel that if I buy it, I haven't 'earned' whatever I'm buying. Feel free to point fingers and laugh at me for being a stick in the mud. .

Just so happens that I am a hungry chicken and in dire need of some feed. If it truly is nothing then please spare me a few crumbs. Poor chickens. - It's not "Play through a pre-set story, become stronger, do endgame". Gameplay is open ended, and you make your own story. you are paying for your subscription.
some people work for Euros, other work for dollars. since we have a global economy running around you can exchange those.
you apparently work for isk, and buy gametime with isk. I work for euros, and buy my gametime with euros.
whatever makes you happy
