During sea trials the Royal Navy's state of the art Astute class attack submarine was run aground, MoD made a press release reassuring the public that it was not a "nuclear accident" and the hull was still watertight and they hoped to re float the sub shortly.
BBC News article
The Sub was re floated on Friday evening and will be assessed for rudder damage, senior commanders admitted negligence caused the accident and have been reprimanded.

And if it is damaged, there will of course be no money available to repair it. ____________________

Wouldn't surprise me, last time this happened it cost millions to make HMS Trafalgar sea worthy again.

Yeah ... I saw that.
There's one Captain whose career is over.
Even if he wasn't on watch - it's his responsibility - to have people who are on watch - that won't ****ing run the ship aground ... Of course ... whoever was on watch ... he's screwed too.
With some ships, mostly Amphibious Warfare Ships - you're supposed to run the ship aground - but - only at the place you want to run it aground. Given the nature of their job ... if they were involved in an amphibious operation and ran aground short of the beach ... varying currents, tides, sea states and sea bottoms ... are sort of an occupational hazard ... so ... under those conditions a captain might survive grounding his ship to soon.
Any other time though - with any other ship - run aground - and your ****ing career is over bud.
There are way to many people standing in line who want to be ship Captains in a peace time navy (or at least one that isn't involved in large scale naval warfare) for any navy to tolerate someone who can't keep his ship off the rocks.

The sub is so stealthy, the Captain didn't even know where it was!
The sub is so stealthy, the ocean floor didn't know what hit it!
The sub is so stealthy, nobody on the outside ever heard the coordinated D'oh! of the crew! (or would it be Bloody Hell?)
The sub is so stealthy, it was actually beached for a week before anyone knew what was going on!

big deal untill 1996 anyone that got onto a military base in the UK that had nukes on it and was lucky enough to take their bike, could use their bike lock key to arm and detonate a nuclear weapon.

hey shows there was alot of trust lol, then again you had those pilots that were flying around with live nukes and not even knowing about it

"In 2004 it was estimated that we had lost at least 11 nuclear weapons of the bomb type. This is not counting other types of nuclear weapons. It was also estimated that 92 nuclear bombs were lost at sea from all nuclear capable countries."
I recall reading about one notable accident in the UK where the storage area for H-bombs caught fire...yes it caught ****ing fire lol...amazingly the safeties did not fail while the building burned to the ground, otherwise 50 % of the UK would have been a crater. A nuke wont just got off especially not a Fusion warhead nukes need a specific sequence of events to detonate with a full yield, yes it can result in a conventional chemical explosive reaction with a dirty bomb effect or no explosion and radioactive contamination but they are highly unlikely to result in a full atomic yield.

Ummm pretty sure that neclear weapons are desgind to be able with stand being doused in jetfuel an set of fire for a while.
Getting one to go off when its wanted is not a trival exersize... ========= "I am not saying there should be capital punishment for stupidity, but why can`t we just take the safety labels off everything and let the problem fix its self |
