The new cargo capacity of hulks is ridiculous, at 350 m3. That equates to 7 mining crystals able to be carried in the hold and 2 in the miners at any one time. Because you have to have 1 space free in order to unload a strip miner into, to switch the crystal.
I understand that the new function of the hulk is intended to be as a member of a fleet-supported operation, HOWEVER, many players join casual mining fleets with non-corporation pilots. There is no convenient way to manage crystal ownership in such a fleet.
This patch means that mineral miners are pretty much limiting themselves to harvesting one type of ore, unless they have corporation fleet orca or jetcanned supply support. When crystals burn out, spares to replace them will not be readily available. With 16 types of ore and 2 tiers of each of the crystals available, limiting harvest capabilities to 1 or 2 types of ore per trip is assenine.
The perfect fix to this would be to drop mining crystal mass down to 10 - 20m3. This would prevent the cargo hold from being used as a large capacity ore storage area, while still allowing mineral miners the ability to carry significant crystal supplies, necessary for them to perform their role within the mining fleet.
Please include this change into August 8th's patch.
Thanks.

I can guess CCPs response, "AHAHAHAHA! NO!"
Really learn to plan better, or just go after 2-3 ore types at a time. "I don't know which is worse, ...that everyone has his price, or that the price is always so low." Calvin

Why would you ever want to have crystals for more than one or two ores at a time anyways? When you go out mining you should already know what you're going to mine before undocking. |

"The reduction of the cargo holds does have an unfortunate side effect for miners; there is much less space for mining crystals. We alleviated this slightly by cutting the volume of mining crystals in half, but it is now something that miners have to plan for before they go mining."

It may have been mentioned already, but you can put Gaussian containers in your cargo bay, thus gaining some extra m3. This is what I used to do until I got a new job as the Orca pilot... Now I just jettison crystals for the Hulk pilots. If you are determined to fly the new Hulk solo, I suggest Gaussian containers in the cargo bay to expand m3.
A medium container eats 325m3 and yields 390m3 inside and has no side effects like reductions to hull or speed. I know it's not a huge improvment, but it's something... |

Kind of the point of Tech II = more specialized. So yes you can't mine every type of ore like a *****. Unless you want to use Tech I lasers or use Tech I crystals. The small cargo hold reinforces the hulks roll as a fleet mining barge. Having to have a Orca/Indy help support it.
Also crystals have been cut in half to T1=15m3 and T2=25m3 with the new update. Why do I have this sig? I don't smoke. |

Well, in that case, he should be using a Skiff or Mackinaw after the patch. If you want to get maximum yield from the Hulk, you have to team up with a group that you work well with and either split up the roid types between you so there's no need for each individual to carry more then a small number of crystal sets, or have the haulers bring you the right crystal types when needed. That extra yield is their reward for doing so, while the casuals joining a random fleet will not. |

This ^
And it does state, as someone has already posted, that you will need to have a better idea of what you're going to be mining before you undock and head out.

Agreed. Like options without Dislike options are pure stupidity if only because they don't let the whole story be told. If you see a post with 50 Likes you might think that it's a popular idea even though there might be 500 people who would have Disliked it because they think the poster is a bloody moron.
Besides, if people can provide (at least to people other than the one whose post was Like'd) faceless, nameless support for something then they should be able to provide the same degree of nameless, faceless dissent for posts as well. |
