I was having a conversation with someone the other day about the Stewart / Colbert phenomenon, as indeed - and despite the "comedy" factor - their voices have become very influential in the American political sphere. From the way that points raised in their programs are seemingly popping up everywhere else, the upcoming rallies this weekend, the high profile of their guests (who often admit to regularly watching their shows - such as the king of Jordan himself recently), Colbert testifying in Congress (in character!), and so on and on...
That their shows are comedy after all, and yet have become this influential, speaks volumes on the poor quality of American political news media in general - which is precisely one of the major issues Stewart and co. enjoy poking fun at.

Eh ...
My biggest problem with comedians ... is that I don't find most of them funny.
*shrug*
There are things I find funny ... it's just that if someone is trying to hard to be funny ... then it's not.
Mostly I don't find these guys funny.
The best comedians I find to be those who find some truth in things and point it out. Here, a lot is funny because we can see ourselves or people we know in their humor. Thinking about it ... it seems to me - that the comedians I prefer - are those who are laughing with someone about their common failings - rather than at them. It's like ... we ALL have our short comings ... so ... who the hell are these people to set themselves up as someone to make fun of someone else?
However - that said - I really enjoy Stewart taking reporters to task. By and large ... I just ****ing hate reporters ... and it is a real pleasure to see the tables turned on THEM. The thing is ... one of the few reporters I actually kind of liked, Rich Sanchez, ended up losing his job because Stewart got to him and he reacted as a human being - said some things that may well have been true but were poorly thought out - and lost his job. Hunh ... I just noticed the parallels there with Mel Gibson ...
When you really **** someone off, they say things without thinking - and - tend to strike back at the person making fun of them. They may not hate women - but when their ex ****es them off - they may refer to HER as an ... unflattering name the filters on this board won't let me enter ... Using a particular hateful term - doesn't mean someone hates all people that term might pertain to - it means they HATE the person they are using it against. BUT - the media - and those people who like to see themselves as victims whom that term might pertain to - are all over the person for being a racist or sexist or whatever-ist - when all they are really guilty of - is hating one particular person and using the most hateful term they can think of to attack THAT person. But - controversy sells - and the media are in the business of selling air time - (not reporting the news ...) so they tabloidize things making them as sensational as they can.
It is taking reporters to task for doing that that I do enjoy - though what these two guys are doing ... is merely an overt version of what those self same reporters do.
Of course ... the problem with these guys doing anything instead of making fun of it, is that actually doing something is way harder. It's really ****ing easy to just sit back on your ass and make fun of other people - especially when what they tend to do - is pile on to really easy targets like some of these Tea Party people. It's like "OK. You've made fun of an idiot. Great. They were an idiot. They still are an idiot and - you've shown me nothing new. So - who cares? Not me."
But then - I enjoy watching things I can learn something from.
*shrug*
One of the things that bothers me about these two - is that their popularity ... may have gone to their heads. They are certainly playing it for all it is worth. As long as they aren't stupid enough to believe their own hype ... that's fine. This is their job and ... if your in that job and your hot - you really do want to milk it for all you can ... before you're not ...
So - if that's what they're doing - striking while the irons hot ... then fine. I sure don't blame them for making money while they can do it - which in the entertainment business ... doesn't usually happen once ... much less ... again ...
It's like ... at one time ... Howard Stern was fairly popular and his schtick was being an ass. You don't hear so much about him any more so I suspect his popularity has faded. In a few years ... or months ... or weeks ... these guys may be there with Howard ... trying to milk the last drops of money they can out of their former glory.

I agree with what you say, except that I do find them funny when I do catch them But as you pointed out it is not hard to point and make funny of stupid people but they do a great job of making fun of the reporters they parody and it has been an interesting evolution the two of these guys have gone through since their early days. I also tend to find myself listening to the History channel or something similar instead of listening to the ramblings of yet another self interested babbling idiot.

Uh, sure he's funny and all.. but you do know people WRITE his scripts right? Also, to be quite honest, I find his delivery a little bit too forced. He lays extra emphasis on silly useless cheap jokes that he pulls with his face/pen/paper/whatever forcing more laughs out of those than they really deserve.
If you want your country fixed by a comediant, you should have nominated George Carlin back when he was still alive. Now THAT would have been an interresting 4 years. __________________________________________________

How about Richard Pryor?
"Grim news today out of the White House.
Today, at 5:45pm, President Pryor died at Walter Reed Hospital.
He succumbed to injuries sustained when he accidentally ignited the mattress he was sleeping on with an incredibly hot crack pipe.
The casket will be carried by horse & carriage to NYC and, Friday, services will be held at Harlem's Apollo Theater."

and you know that he's one of the writers right? In face colbert used to be one of his writers.
Watch him on crossfire, he went on the show without writters or backup, the nest week, the show was canceled. He single handily dropped the rating down to 30%.
But the point isn't if he's funny or not, he has power because he flames people that say bush or obama is a ****. He thinks it was stupid that someone got fired for saying they were afraid of Muslims on airports, but he also thinks it's stupid the way fox news is trying to say the company that fired him for those remarks is in fact a secret Muslim base of operations.
a lot of people out there support the war, support gay right, and are sick of turning into stations that are all EXTREME left or right.
Duh he has writters, they all show up 6 hours before the show, and write it plus do all the graphics in 6 hours. He helps write, just like how colbert helps his staff. Both colbert and Jon were solo writters/comedies at one point. But you don't make a script in 6 hours every single day on your won, that would just be stupid.
but the lead gets to how to put it... make the general mold. What he thinks are the important stories, what jokes they should of shouldn't keep. They get the last word, and they work 7-8 hours a day. An honest living.
There is other true news, it's all bull****. Most people change thier opinions just based on who hires them.
Glen beck >.< 5 years ago he was a bleeding heart liberal, how can you trust that?
OH! want to add, yes jon and colbert would be terrible as a president, it's a joke dude :P

I think a big part of his appeal is that he talks about politics without being totally partisan about it the whole time. It is more personal and human, and he is happy to laugh at the left as well. It is a breath of fresh air for the USA after all their political radio jocks and comedians who have to continually bang their political drum no matter what.
Disclaimer: this opinion is based on nothing more that 2 weeks a year in the USA, in the company of Bible belt right winger in-laws and their angry talk jocks in the car instead of music - What the F**k is that all about - Driving to a soundtrack of an angry hateful old men, instead of music :(

I think many Americans think Reagan did pretty good so I don't see an objection there
Also, having a jewish president would drive conspiracy theorist crazy
Still, I'd have to go with Colbert before he got his own show. I just loved it when he said/did outrageous things and people took him at face value.

Edited by: Vogue on 27/10/2010 17:52:24 Wen Jiabo gave an interview to CNN and said a lot of liberal democratic sounding things. He was on the front of TIME magazine. His own interview was censored within China by state controlled media. And at the same time a lot of powerful retired Chinese communist officials released a statement that also had a lot of progressive liberal sounding themes.
So one could assume there is particularly strong power struggle going on in China that is more than the normal factional power games that go on within the singular Chinese Communist Party.
I don't think China should go straight to 'democracy' for a country that has 1100 million inhabitants. But it should start exploring empowering people with liberal ideas.
.
For the USA a respectable ex military commander should rise as a political independent with an agenda to fix the country in a centrist way.

China has a 3000 year long history and must do his own way to democracy. With Wealth will also come the wish for more freedom in the middle class. China will change sooner or later. And maybe to understand Chinas position about Tibet they should read the history. tibetians are only 0.4% of the population of China. Or 5 Millions.

Edited by: Vogue on 27/10/2010 19:06:42 ^^ You mention these east European countries and some of them, especially Romania, has the problem of getting 'democracy' but the old guard with the experience and power networks still maintained control and thus a lot of corruption happened from the legacy of back handers during communist rule. This also has happened in Russia and could happen in China. But China seems a lot more volatile. There are regular factory strikes and riots to with living conditions. The transition to 'democracy' for China has so many pot holes. Loosening the iron grip as part of the transition to it could result in chaos.
Mentioning how much cultural history a country has is often practically meaningless. Greece has given us 'The Republic' and other foundation stones for liberal civilization but is one of the most corrupt countries in Europe
