one thing that i miss are the small things, like paint your ships in differnt colors ad decales, that would make the game abit more fun to play
this could ba achived in the stations, and it would cost some isk to paint the ship or add corp decales on the sides of the ships

Paint, no. Decals, maybe. The selection of decals would have to be very limited to be possible, though it is possible and would be cool.

you know... speaking of paint...
i was playing GTA-SA today and was messing around with the paintjob feature in some mode garages in the game.
it occured to me that maybe the skin designers could provide optional details for the ships, so that they still retained the same colors, but you could mix and match stripes, patches, symbols, window lighting, etc. that way, the Devs could keep the overall look of, say, a Thorax the same and still provide some custom detail options for it without having to worry about hot-pink di.. uh, Thoraxes flying around.
it still seems to me that this could be done with a paint by number system. as long it were something that could be turned off by the player, i don't see it as something that wouldn't be worthwhile doing.
but i guess there are lot of things they've got their hands full dealing with atm.

Edited by: Calsak on 07/01/2005 09:23:32 I would guess paint jobs on ships would be a more of a viable option than decals IMHO.
A 'standard' set of CCP supplied skins for each ship that could have the colours of it altered by a fixed pallete of colours. No real download lag as they are all from CCP so would be in the client. Just downloading a couple of bytes worth of info to say which one the particular ship is wearing. It would only be worth downloading these when ship model was within a certain LOD (level of detail) that you could actually see it (so you don't download the whole 160 people's skins when you first jump into Yulai).
I'd personally be happy with a fixed pallete of colours just to change the existing skins.

Yeah that would be pretty cool. Homeworld and War hammer 40k: Dawn of War did it like that.

Edited by: Svenstaro on 07/01/2005 11:32:32 Hmm... pretty cool but afaik this has already been discussed a lot(!!) of times. Anyway: decals may be possible though, because if there are fixed decal points on each ship and a limited decalpool, it only has to be a number that is transmitted from player to player so the game knows what decals to use. the decals are locally stored already and are just used when needed. it could be done this way i think. ______________________________________________

Long ago my corp mates told another corp mate they could paint his Raven with the intention of stealing it. Fun times ho hum.
Seriously though, been discussed a lot, problems would occur.
BUT! Maybe if we were the only ones to see our s****y paint job we'll be happy and still lag-free. ------------------------------------------------ I've always owned Kehmor, cheap as chips off Ebay

I believe one of the movie makers already did that... on the client-side, but not in a way that affected the server, only their comp. Something about switching skin files around, but I never did learn the details.

Edited by: Aion Amarra on 08/01/2005 01:41:05 Paintjobs? As Etoile said. Can't be done any better or simpler.
Decals? Just add a higher res version of the corporation and alliance logos into the download of the patch that includes the feature and have the pilot of the ship decide if he want's one or both of them switched on or off. New aliiance logos would be streamed to the client when needed. So there are a few fixed decal points and the client decides which ones to apply judging by the corp tag of the pilots ship and if he switched the decals on or off. (Which would AFAIK take just two bits when done correctly. A 0 or 1 at the point where the client anticipates it when the info of a new ship in the vicinity gets transferred to the player.)

Another feature that would be great to see. Wouldnt expect it to soon thoug, I bet the artists are to busy with new ship designs, and t2 versions of ships.
The new ships will need a total new design and take alot of work. Thoug being able to have a banner on your ship from your corp or alliance would be great. The idea of customizing sertain parts also sound great (love the window ligth idea)
Another great feature that is probably far away.

decals sounds the best idea. Would allow you to apply corp or personal logos to your ship. -------- MAcheTT3 > Hehe, ok... How much would you take them off for? |
