Yes, but only 1/10 as entertaining. Forum warrior tears and all that.
(You also forgot the ever-popular topic on "what is UTC?" and "how does my time zone differ from UTC?". This will probably be the second most popular post.)

oh, think how they would include a timer that counts off the hours/minutes/seconds untill eve gets online again and how the whole server would crash because everyone login all at once :p
priceless....

It will be back up at 16:30 Iceland time. If you want to know what current Iceland time is then type "time iceland" into google and Google calculator tells you. Because I'm nice, here's a link to save you the effort.

No, not typical. It was a power outage, and not CCP's fault.
Originally by: CCP Navigator Last night we had an outtage at our primary network provider for Tranquility which resulted in a series of disconnects for the majority of our players. The first one occurred at 02:24 UTC and the second at 04:32. We sincerely apologize for this interruption which happened as a result of failed network maintenance on the provider side. Please note that this was not related to the planned downtime.

I wonder why so many people complain and whine here. We have an opportunity to be intelligent and to communicate effectivly, yet for some reason, so many people here behave worse than children. It is sad really. CCP are making updates, simple. It is not complicated. I am looking forward to the changes and I hope CCP are confident to continue the game for a lot longer.

You know, Windows has a great feature that lets you add an additional clock to your system clock...
Click on the date and time in the lower right hand corner, then click "Change date and time settings" Then go to the "Additional clocks" tab and check the "Show this clock" box, and select the time zone "(UTC) Coordinated Universal Time", in the "Enter Display name:" box, type "EVE Time", then click ok.
Now everytime you mouseover the date and time in the lower right corner, you'll see two times, "Local Time" and "EVE Time"

Migrating several gigabytes of information requires time. This involves backups, data translation, then warming up the servers again (which takes a half hour anyways).
Honestly, if you have any ideas for how to actually speed up such a migration, download Python, Microsoft Visual Studio, and Microsoft SQL Server, and get cracking. If you can make it go faster, you could make a lot of money working on big-iron databases, making life better for a whole lot of people. Have fun!
And take it from me. Loosing a few hours of skill training isn't a big deal. You'll get over it. EVE is about having fun and making friends (and enemies). Skills are just a way of helping people specialize in specific things and learn how to use equipment while they train for more equipment. As any PvP junkie will tell you, a 10mil SP pilot can kick the butt of a 100mil SP pilot if the 10mil SP pilot knows what he's doing more than the 100mil pilot.
To answer your question, yes there is a much easier way to fix the time to reboot the servers.
Get away from MS, MS adds in hundreds of lines of code which are processor intensive, and destructive to a good database. I use to build databases using Apache (not the free version), and all other things you spoke about in your post.
I could get a massive database with over a million lines of data up and running in less than 10 minutes. Of course I was using Linux, but if we did that heaven forbid we actually have programmers that stop using the MS crutch to really build a great game from the ground up instead of patching flaw after flaw because of the bad code produced by MS in the first place.

Compared to some of the last downtimes imo it's quite quiet in here.
I think that's due to the effort they invested to be a bit more verbose during update this time: Providing info on facebook, twitter and on the update webpage in parallel. Thumbs up for that.
Did you notice not too many people did jump right into CCPs faces for coming up with a 10+ hour DT estimate? Users are kinda fine with downtime if it in fact fixes stuff.
With the forum websites being up again, the original post of this thread should get updated (or have at least links to twitter/facebook), too:
"15:40 update: We have uncovered one issue with reprocessing items."

16:15 update: Deploying a hotfix, a client update, and some additional internal testing. We expect the downtime to be extended to 17:30 UTC === 7 minutes ago via web/twitter
Keep calm, folks! For now that's less than 20% deviation from the 11:30h estimate ! :)

I like DT because I feel like I get so much done, but now I've got nothing left to do lol.
Consequently, CCP may have a reputation for extended extended downtimes, but they are hardly the worst. I remember Star Wars galaxies...you'd best not plan on getting on on patch day or sometimes the day after. No way to gain xp or skills while the servers were down there either.

I have the same problem, and it does not add to enjoyment when you are primaried, attempt to warp out and the whole thing stops working and you have to boot from start, OOhhh what fun to arrive back in the fleet battle to see your pod pop in front of your eyes. And to Quote CCP full computer crashes are not our fault, we suggest you make sure your drivers are up to date!!!!!!.....started happening "optional patch 4" and got worse "optional patch 6"......where did 5 go ???

They rolled back/disabled Patch #5
/speaking as a Computer Technician:
The fact of the matter is "Full Computer Crashes" may, or may not be their fault, there are several reasons that either the computer, or the game client could cause a full system crash, however, while my computer has never crashed when playing EVE, my client crashes allot since those patches and my drivers are up to date. I'll be running 4 accounts (one in each monitor) or 3 or 2 and one or two of them will crash with the CCP.EXE file error, yet the others keep running fine. so the problem isn't a user problem entirely, and those errors realistically don't relate to drivers otherwise they would be persistent, not intermittent.
Of course, I'm not trying to dog CCP, i'm just saying that throwing out that type of "blanket" reply is being disingenuous to providing real customer support.
Just an update, I'm in game right now and there are almost 4000 users online.
be prepared for two patches, a 15mb one and a smaller fix.

Cheers fella. play more than a couple of mmogs and the only problem is on this one post patch. Running a new graphics acard too with up-to-date drivers....too many people suffering the same for it not to have roots at ccp

Yeah... if you're on that piece of bull droppings called windows. No operating system that is worth its name should consider "full system crashes" something that "happens". Linux doesn't (and very rarely crashes, even more rarely due to some software failure), all unix systems don't.
CCP is right in saying that full system crashes should never happen due to client activity. Yet driver coders aren't perfect, and those who made windows are drunken monkeys that passed out long ago.
Quote: and those errors realistically don't relate to drivers otherwise they would be persistent, not intermittent.
Not really, it fully depends on what part of the driver/OS/client interface has a quirk, and what kind of quirk it is.
