I resisted... for more than 5 years to play eve. Hoping there will be another UO/starwar galaxies sandbox with enough popularity to sustain itself. It is depressing the sad state of the mmorpg industry got itself into, wow ruined it all. After finding out the new bioware starwar mmorpg is nothing more than another wow clone with some fancy bells/whistles, it was time to go eve...
So i started eve like any other: -google researched on best efficiency -map out my build template -log in and looked up some of my old clan from eq/wow, and grabbed a few million isk for a heardstart -remap the attribute to max int/mem -get +3 int/mem implant -max out 2x int skills, 2x mem skills, and 1x learning. in low to high duration order. -applied for a newbie friendly corporation: eve university, but the process is all over the place worse than a college application and the waiting queue didnt work. So gave up on that for now.. -did all the newbie missions, they were pretty decent in helping you learn the game. Had some trouble with the military one since i didnt have any other skills but learning at this point. Had to turtle the last mission.
So now here I am, with still 15 days to max my learning skills - which involves me logging on for 2 mins each day and check on the skill queue. I must say this is a very strange design concept, no mmorpg i ever played force a newbie NOT to play the game for the first 30 days...but eve takes pride on not being the norm right? ;)
Meanwhile I looked into the class templates, deciding between a trader or a miner. A trader seems more work since you need keep up with the market all over the universe but more reward too i suppose. I am however leaning towards miner (at least for now), for its simplicity.
Do you guys think one can make decent money after maxing out the mining template skills + hardware(ship/upgrades) and only mine in >0.5 sectors?
So far the game is what I expected - a giant well ran sandbox. And very well polished, usually those sandboxes are full of bugs due to the complexity but eve online got it down pretty well - that's a definite plus. Cant wait until i can actually play the game in 3 weeks...

Why exactly do you need to max your learning skills first? See what parameters you need for the profession you choose and get your learning skills for them to lvl 4(standard skills) and lvl 3(advanced). It would take you 2-3 days tops. Actually I just checked in evemon - in order to get in a hulk it'll take you 3 days and 17 hours to get all the relevant learning skills. And that's if you don't use implants.

Most of us prefer to get.
Learning 4 First Teir Atribute Skills 4 Second Teir Skills Atribute 3 +2-4 Implants
That is usually enough Training speed.

You are starting the hardcore way like that. Efficiency shouldn't overrule gameplay: I would really advise you to leave them at 4/3 or so for a bit and train some useful skills instead; this will vastly increase the fun you have early in the game and you have more than enough time to max those learning skills in your first year :P (If you really want to, that is. I don't have them maxed myself yet after more than a year) :P
Have fun and fly safe though o/

If you start out going right in to learning skills, you're doing something wrong.
Get some basic support and fitting skills trained, grab a cheap T1 frigate or destroyer, and go out PVPing or running missions while you work on skills. You'll have a lot more fun actually learning how to play the game than you would if you just trained right up for something and jumped in with no experience of game mechanics.
Mining can get you some starter ISK, but it's really not the best way to do it. Like mentioned above, buy a T1 frig, then go run the full tutorial and you'll get some free skills and ships from that. Then you can hop over to the Sisters of EVE epic arc for even more free goodies and ISK. If you take your time with that, you should have a basic understanding of fitting and how to fly your ship somewhat decently. And by then, you'll also have some skills trained up so you won't be bored while you work on the learning skills.

3 weeks? and you're talking about maxing out mining skills and such?
try 5 months or so to get into a hulk and making mining in high sec reasonably worthwhile. Even then, it doesn't pay that well

In the beginning there where no learning skills. Then a 2nd set of learning skills got added. Then bigger implants got added. CCP is rather bad at removing parts from the game that where a bad idea to start with. They are all up for compromises. (Big Company Syndrom)

You are going to compete with players that run 4 hulks and an orca with maxed skills and imps. And I mean individual players, not corps. You like minimum wages?
On top of that mineral prices will drop by another 30% until they get catched by insurance. (Think of insurace as a indirect mineral buy order that got nerfed a few month ago.)

running level 3 missions is more profitable than mining. very easy to do in a drake that is passive tanked. eve is nothing like wow, in case your worried.
anyways when u get to lvl 4 on the first tier learning, get to level 3 on the 2nd tier, also get learning to 3-4
you can kinda skip charisma its not used as much as the other. run level 1 missions in a tier 3 frig, check out battleclinic for fittings then lvl 2's in cruisers ( skip destroyers) lvl 3 in battle cruisers lvl 4 in battle ships.

Should be postin in the skills section but nevertheless, here's a cheap skill plan (far from optimized, just a hobbled together one) to show just what you can do in your first month:
First thing to do is reroll. Your name is terrible and you cant change it later. Ever.
Skill plan for Gagaliya BaLaBoom

143 skills; Total time: 29 days, 23 hours, 25 minutes, 54 seconds; Cost: 5,651,500
Cybernetics to add implants as you get em right off the hop. 1 level is good enough for +3's, your gonna play this game not sit and spin. That means your gonna lose your pod and your ship.
Forget mining. Don't even consider it. You need to learn to play, not learn to afk. Hop into a Caldari missile frig (Kestrel)and start shooting things. NPC's, rats in belts, whatever. During this time you will acquire basic T1 modules and fit them completely wrong until you figure out what goes where and why you lost your ship. Start the Sister's of Eve Epic arc, do your tutorial missions, get into missioning/ratting. Learn salvaging, still remains decent for ISK for the books, ships and mods that you won't be given from the mission rewards. Get a Drake, make more ISK than non-bonused high sec miners in Level 3 missions (you will have within 1 month). PVP - fly Rifters all day long. Join a fail corp, make friends.

You really don't need to max them, getting -all- of the learning skills to 5 only pays off after a year or so to play. Get them all to 3, maybe 4, and then start playing the game. You will want them to 4 eventually, and maybe 5 once you start training really long skills, but by then you can focus and enjoy the game instead of sitting and waiting. Regarding the strange design concept, CCP has stated it wants to do something about that before, but they couldn't just yank them out of the game without a few hundred thousand vets *****ing about the SP they wasted on it. Hopefully one day it will change.
Originally by: Gagaliya BaLaBoom deciding between a trader or a miner. [snip] Do you guys think one can make decent money after maxing out the mining template skills + hardware(ship/upgrades) and only mine in >0.5 sectors?
Of course what you play is based on your own personal likes and dislikes. However, I say don't do both. If you are a trader the only think you'll be doing is running goods back and forth all day on autopilot (or worse, manual if it's expensive, suicide ganks happen in high sec). Or adjusting Jita market orders by .01 ISK, although I hear that can be very profitable if you know what you are doing. Mining is usually half afk, it's done on alts to get some extra ISK. Again, you can be suicide ganked. Although the price of minerals is way down, you can make good money depending on your dedication (see Chribba).
I would fit up a frigate and at least jump into PvE. Start killing rats and running missions for ISK. It's a lot better than mining or adjusting market orders, you are actually engaged in the game. Get into a good corporation, Eve University is good for helping new players, and get to know the other people out there.
At the end of the day all of that isk really isn't worth anything if you don't spend it on something. Some people end up with 30bil ISK PvE ships, but I say get used to PvP, the sooner the better. No matter what your profession is, you can make more money in PvP areas (namely 0.0). Adventure and excitement! you know you want to!.

Again, you're doing it wrong :P If you -really- know you will still be playing in a year+ then it's probably worth it, but I think most people here would recommend getting into the game for a bit first. Level 4 is high enough.

ps: i like my name
Don't worry about maxing out your learning skills, level 4 at the most. Also keep in mind that whatever field you want to focus on doesn't require you to have all learning skills, if you're going to be trading you don't need to max every attribute before you get some trading skills going. Level 5 learning skills are pretty much a waste of time for most people, certainly for someone who wants to find a new, enjoyable game to play.
p.s. your name is p.cool. p.p.s. all the cool rich people are traders p.p.p.s. mining sucks (Veldspar god is an entirely different occupation and not covered by this statement)

training skills need to be removed. people join the game and start training them and get bored. forget them, train them in a month or so.
for isk, don't go mining, running missions is quite profitable atm.
the best thing about eve is pvp (although it is not for evrryone). so once you get some missions done, grab a cheap rifter, or a kestrel, join rvb, and start pvping. yes unlike wow, you can start that just a couple of days in.
people in rvb are very friendly and will teach you how to pvp. just remember, everyone is out to scam you or to kill you. have fun

It doesn't force you 'not to play the game' YOU are doing that, in some misguided quest for the 'optimal/perfect' starting order. Just about any 'profession' benefits from standings, ie a miner, manufacturer, trader, mission runner for taxes/refining/broker fees so in your research you'd look that up and find a decent corp to operate with/out of then do missions for them.
SOE arc is a good 'next' path to take for new players that want some more guidance as well as more isk and a 'challenge' to train more skills that will benefit them later, JMO.
Someone already beat me to it but Play the game/have fun however you do that your skill training is a means to an end not the endgame or ultimate goal of your playing if you aren't enjoying doing something now you won't magically enjoy it when you have a ship worth 10-30x the cost etc. Sitting in a station doesn't help you learn/explore the game or mechanics of how things work or why they do to even really see if you'd like to try this or that. Thee SOE arc is a good next step if you don't know what to do yet, just want to 'take it easy' for a bit as skills build up and you read up on guides or whatever research you do about the activities you want to try in game.

Keep in mind that maxing out your learning skills only pays after years: It's faster to get into a titan from scratch WITHOUT learning 5, for example.
Get your learning skills to a 4/3 and then only bring them up to 5/4 after a year, in my opinion. Fun in the game >>>>>>> anything else.

Anyway bottomline is max 5 learning skills is the most efficient route for the long term. Besides it's not like i have to sit there keep clicking a button. It only wastes 2 mins of my time to log in and queue up the skills, it just means to start the game 1 month later. I held up for 4 years, what's an extra month.
Still dont know what i want to specialize in though, since everyone says miner sucks. Guess i could focus on getting a drake and do mission runs, but that's just too "normal". What else is there... explorer? pvp with the kewld00ds?
Want something passive, i can do on my own while watch some tv or read a book. Is mining really that unprofitable? after you max out the skills and with a hulk? what's the isk income for 1 hr of play?

Actually, IIRC it takes something like 3-4 years before advanced learning skills to V will pay off. Of course, if you have nothing better to train, then by all means go for it. The next time you decide to train something you will train it faster than if you didn't.
Anyways, let me give ALL new players some advice:
Don't train only learning skills - it is INCREDIBLY inefficient. By sparing naught but a few weeks of training time, you can get yourself into a battlecruiser and running level 3 missions, making FAR more money while you wait for your learning skills to finish than if you stuck with training your learning skills while dying to World's Collide level 1 over and over again because your character can't fit a non-civilian module to a ship. ----------

This really, If you got the skills for a HAC, but no isk to buy it, you're still not flying that HAC.
Never mind that training a token amount of skills will let you get practice in.

The same people who tell you not to max out training time by maxing learning skills are telling you to max out ISK by running missions not mining, which you seem to have an interest in. If you chose the industry path mining in something other than a Hulk is the natural starting point. In a year or two you can progress to running a manufacturing operation that starts with mining or becoming a major industry player in a 0.0 corp. Choose whatever path interests you and take it from there. You will enjoy the game much more than training for a Drake right away so you can run Level 3s and 4s.

Don't worry so much about making a plan to follow, just train skills as you need them. You should probably go straight for a battlecruiser to start though. BCs are very cost effective, and share weapon skills with cruisers. After that, who knows, but a tier3 BC is useful even in "endgame" content if properly fit.

Everyone talks about this game requiring intelligence to play, then tell you to do everything a specific way.
Just follow whatever you're interested in and feel things out as you go. Try mining for awhile, and if you get bored with it move on to something else for a bit.
Learning skills do speed things up, but you don't have to do it all right away.
