Hi all,
I want to train my char to become an efficient salvager. The way i see it, salvaging is a profitable profession that doesn't take you to long to train to be any good at and it doesn't require expensive equipment etc. The obvious question is, of course, where do all the salvagable wrecks come from.
So far, i've been flying a frigate. I created, looted and salvaged NPC pirate wrecks in 0.6 to 0.8 roid belts, hopping from one belt to the next. Depending on NPC pirate ship design (whether they contain "Amor Plates", "Alloyed Tritanium Bar" etc.), i can salvage stuff worth a few millions in the course of about an hour or so.
So, one option are the asteroid belts to look for pirates and wrecks. Another option i have tried to exploit are hidden pirate bases and hideouts or rogue drone hives which can be found with little difficulty via core scanning probes.
Are there any veteran salvagers here that like to share a few tips on what else i should try and where i might look for more wrecks?
The obvious choice of running "encounter" missions for NPC corps to salvage the wrecks during missions is out of the question for me. I don't want to run those missions as they will, over time, make you an enemy of other empires.

The correct term for this type of character is a ninja salavager.
You find the best salvage by probing down a mission runner and then salavage his wrecks. You can also combine this via ninja looting.
Some people will poo poo this however it is a valid form of isk making. I would suggest you search the forums for ninja looting / slavaging.
Now to make a long story short, if you do this solo it can become very boring very quickly. It can also be a hit or miss type of activity. I have looted for hours to make maybe 3-5 mil. Sometimes if I got lucky and was able to ninja loot something it could be worth 6-20m. But morale of the sotry is it is luck based and can be extremly boring. Now some people use the ninja looting as a form of pvp. The idea is to get the mission runner to shoot you and then run back and pop him with a gang or a better ship. Most MRs dont know how to pvp so it is a form of griefing. Check out suddenly ninja. They are a cool bunch and can answer some of your questions as well.
But be prepared for people to rage at you whether you ninja salavage or ninja loot.

If the only drawback that keeps you from runing the missions is that you are afraid to loose your standings with opposing factions, then I have a good news for you you are able not only awoid loosing standings, but you can even improove your standings with all factions while runing missions. The trick is that you loose twice less standing with opposing faction than you actually are gaining with the faction you are doing the missions for. And faction standing changes only when you do storyline missions which you get once you compleete 16 ordinary missions. an if you don't like these story line missions you can simply decline them and there will be no standing ajustments at all. You should pay attention whom you are geting missions against though. There are some missions that require killing opposing faction NPCs. Decline them an get other missions. You can ecline mission once each 4 hours without loosing standing.
Back on topick about salvager's carier. if you'll spend some time writting in local chats near the location of popular mission agents, you'll eventually find some mission runers who are runing missions without salvaging and often even without even looting them. So if you'll offer to salvage and loot their missions wrecks and share the salvage with them they will most probably take you with them and won't need to kill anything yourself |

Ok, thanks for the info. Actually i wouldn't mind running encounter missions if only it wouldn't ruin my standings with other empires. If i run Gallente missions, i will (over time) make an enemy of Caldari State for example. I still want to be able to traverse Caldari space without the faction police after me.
Are there, then, any NPC corps with agents offering "encounter" missions, that effect only pirate organisations (or rogue drones)-without the occasional "anti -Caldari" mission and the likes? "InterBus" might be a viable choice as they are, supposedly, neutral to all the five empires. Any other suggestions?
Thank you! |

when you run Caldari missions for a while and then switch to Galente missions you will balance out your stanings an eventually both Caldari and Galente standings will increase. Just be sure not to take missions that are directly agains the opposing factions. Do only missions that require killing NPC pirates.

Sounds good! I guess I'll do that!

Salvaging as a source of income has taken a heavy nerf from the last major patches - attributed to changes in rigs size and NPC loot drops. So, it's slice in your overall income pie is significantly smaller than what it was.
Nevertheless, it's still a viable source of income for young characters (less than 5mil SP generally) .... if they abhor missioning, wants to explore EVE or wants to spend the mojority of their SPs on something else first (other than ship & weapon skills).
Bottomline, in terms of isk/hr, salvaging as a pure income source is a very poor performer.
If you're set on this course, the best salvage comes from BS wrecks, and to a lesser extent BC wrecks. Optimally, all cruiser and frigate wrecks should be ignored as the returns aren't usually worth the time you spend on your salvage cycles. This of course assumes you're in a field of wrecks from L4 missions, anything else's not worth you time tbh (high belt hopping? ahahaha ...only if you're new).
You can try the "Free Wrecks" channel. Folks running L4 missions offering free wrecks to newbies. I'm not sure how active they are atm, but it's probably worth the shot. With the upcoming Noctis dedicated salvage ship (BC class hull) in Incursion, I wonder if this will spur and swamp the salvage market even further
P.S If you're missioning and you want to keep neutral to all 4 empires, it can be done quite easily. |

You'll make more ISK as a young toon doing ninja salvaging then just about anything short of scamming or trading. However, to maximize your ISK, you must be willing to loot, turning red to both the mission runner and his corp. Salvaging without looting is better ISK than high sec mining, but it's pretty much lame sauce. Go ahead, grow a pair, and start looting aggressively. Don't even be too concerned with the consequences. Over the course of a couple of months, this will probably cost you a few cheap salvage frigates (cost of doing business) and eventually, you'll be skilled enough to shoot back, which opens up another (potentially enormous) income stream; harvesting faction and deadspace mods from foolish mission runners.
While most mission runners won't shoot, and I mean the vast majority (75% or more are wise enough to hold their fire), there are certain Lv 4 agents that draw LP grinders. In those systems, you can make an astounding amount of money just flying around to abandoned wreck fields and efficiently vacuum up the wrecks and loot. You might play for an entire week without even being "yellow-boxed" by a mission runner, let alone shot at.

oh, what's that? Looks like an opportunity for a shameless plug!
Anyway...OP, another option, which is less reliable but can have greater payouts is going around well-travelled lowsec/0.0 and looking for delicious t2 wrecks. There's a few pieces of t2 salvage that are worth 15-25+ mil per item. This is more of a passive thing for when you're going through the area anyway, though.
Quote: I have looted for hours to make maybe 3-5 mil.
Okay, I know salvage/loot prices have dropped a bit but...I suggest that if you only made 3-5 mill in multiple hours that you were doing it horribly, horribly wrong. Ninjalooting/salvaging is probably not as profitable as running level 4's in a well-skilled, well-fit missionboat, but it takes far less time to get into, is more fun, and can make a good amount regardless. Plus, there's opportunity for ganks which can periodically give you a large sum of ISK. Pretty much all long-term ninjas I know have at least one 1-2+ bil missionship kill.

Diplomacy can really help you out. I have it at 5, and well, even though my Gallante standing is technically under -8, the diplomacy raises it to -4.8 and I can travel through their space.
Also, once every 4 hours, you can skip a mission. So if the mission pits you against an empire faction, skip it.
As for salvaging... other options would be right outside Jita or follow a Red or Blue fleet around. They tend not to have time to salvage.
Isn't there also a ninja salvaging channel? And honestly, go to a level 4 mission system and ask in local. Many people don't salvage and will let you do it for them without any worries.

Nah, 'ninja' in eve means doing stuff in hostile space without getting caught/noticed. Y'know, like a ninja. The term's since been misappropriated and is now used to describe hi-sec carebearing for rig parts. --

Hehe, i like that! Why not get a cloaked vessel and roam null sec space unseen. Then i de-cloak for a few seconds to salvage any wreck i come across and then cloak again. That would be nifty ninja style to me.
Anyways -perhaps salvaging is not the best of ideas but the other viable option was starting to mine in high sec which i considered incredibly borring and little efficient with an Exequror. That's the best i can fly so far. If you don't run missions you can either salvage or mine, don't you think? And when i get 245.000 ISK from a single "Amor Plate" of any dead "Blood Follower" -and they drop those APs fairly often- then mining is not really an alternative isk/hr -wise. Takes me about 30 minutes to mine enough high sec ore to make 245.000 ISK... But, what else? I didn't even run the tutorials to avoid bad standings towards other empires.
I still consider running encounter missions for NPC corps with the occasional skipping of "anti-other-empire" mission. Or i continue probing high sec space for hideouts and rogue drone hives etc.
Also it's true that i do salvaging because i can already. So i can max out learning skills while i'm salvaging and shooting lo-fi rookie rats. If i started a mining career i would have to concentrate on the myriad of mining related skills.
Thanks for all your input, guys!

Hello I usually just surf the threads but since this is something that directly applies to what I do I thought I would pipe in.
Have you ever considered contracting out to pilots for salvage? I agree that ninja salvage is not worth it in the overall scheme of things unless you loot and that gets you flagged and if the guys having a bad day and don't like loot/salvagers in your mission your going to loose your ship, which is generally cheap, but to a new player, everything is expensive.
I have a small salvaging business that me and 3 other friends do working with, not against mission pilots to make are isk. Depending on who you work for it can be quite lucrative.
I will work each deal separately but the standard is I will go to a "mission rich" sector and talk to pilots about salvaging and looting there missions. The 2 "deals" I run is if they allow me free access to there loot (via join fleet) then I will cut them in on 25% of the profits. It may not seem like much of a payment but its free money for them leaving me a jet-can with bookmarks in a mission.
The second one is 30% if they share mission turn in with me. Now what I mean by this is I usually run with 2 different mission runner pilots at once in the fleet and when they turn in there mission they share with the fleet, sharing there award but mainly there standing increase.
Now the way to really make money at this is like I previously stated in my last paragraph is be running simultaneous missions with pilots. I usally run with 2 at a time (or someone running 1 main and an alt).
Second thing is you want to be salvaging in the room they are fighting in. This way you will get bounty isk on kills hes doing. Of course you NEED to realize that if a secondary wave pops in, you need to be spooling up the warp drive on the spot, no waiting to finish a salvage, just go, warp back and continue salvaging. Some pilots feel "uneasy" about you being in the room there working in but I tell them if I get destroyed, its my own problem and that usually settles that.
The third thing and probably the most important is what type of salvager ship you use. Dessys are real good but you have to make sure it is a ship that cap stable enough to keep going without breaks. I usually run 5 salvagers, 3 tractors and fly to the forth wreck. You will want to strap like a 1mn afterburner on the ship to give a "slight" speed increase to get you around 400m/s. If you go faster 500m/s you will "out-run" your tractors and loose wrecks and have to turn around to get them but you don't want to be so slow your flying forever to get those 85km away wrecks.
Last tip is don't spend to much on your salvage ship to start because that cuts into profits and there is a high chance running the way we run of loosing a couple ships before you perfect it.
I usually rake in about 10-24 mill isk an hour and if there letting share bounties/quest turn in 20-40 mill isk an hour (depending on how fast they are).
Now to work with pilots, make sure your working with a well established pilot who can do missions quick because if there slow, your slow and you loose money. The looting is a MUST to make money with salvaging. I do have more things I do but are trade secrets but if you want to make some isk while getting to missions hopefully this will help you out.

Well another thing you can try out which can have huge payouts is exploration, probe out radar sites and wormholes and whatnot to find some sweet sweet hidden loot.

^^What he said.^^ The data chips you can pick up from a radar site can be as much as 10mill each, added to that you might find a few combat sites that escalate which sometimes leads to nice T2 salvage (I think intact armor plates are worth about 30 mill each) You'll need reasonable probe, analyzer, codebreaker and salvage skills

There are plenty of mission runners who will let you salvage their wrecks, some will even let you in on the mission standing if you split the loot.
Do a search through this forum, you will find a few people willing to do this or just go to any hub and ask nicely.
That should get you up and running, then you can choose to Explore or W/E once you have some skills etc.

Absolutely. I don't really do this myself, but I've been living in 0.0 long enough to know that it'll work often enough to make it worth the effort.
Train cloaking. All you need is level 1 for this.
In lowsec or even 0.0, get yourself set up in a hot area where gangs clash a lot. A little research goes a long way here.
Make sure that your destroyer is fitted for your plan: prototype cloaking device, 3 salvage tackle rigs, 4 tractors + 3 salvagers. Fill out your lows with cargo expanders.
Create tactical bookmarks for the gates in the systems you're going to monitor. Spend your time cloaked in them. People will get used to your presence and ignore you as they roam through.
As a fight winds down, you'll typically see all ships leave the grid as the losers run for someplace safe. When everyone is off grid, warp down to the gate and start salvaging. If anyone returns, warp to a tactical and cloak up. Even if the winners hang around and loot the wrecks, they rarely salvage them. Sometimes they will shoot them. C'est la vie.
This will net you more T2 salvage than you can imagine if you're patient and you fly smart.

Aye, not at the gatefight. I was running out of time with the first post and didn't cover this part: The tractors are for anomalies (which you can scan down without probes) that have been abandoned. Many alliances have adopted a policy about abandoning rat wrecks (in belts as well) so that friendly salvagers can work them after they have been run. This, while a bit less profitable than the cornucopia of T2 loot+salvage you'll see from a gatefight, is still quite profitable, especially if there is an NPC station somewhere nearby where you can put the goods back on to the local market.

Hi folks,
I thought i'd share a freak experience with you lot. Apart from salvaging i also try my hand at exploration. I found a wormhole that let me to an "Unknown" 0.0 system with no other way in or out but the unstable wormhole (no stations, no stargates, nothing). I scanned down a "Perimeter Ambush Point" and without knowing what that might possibly be, i warped there. Turned out it was a sleeper site and first volley of one of the drones there nearly depleted all shield points of my puny Heron. I warped out just in time. Now what would have happened, if the drones had podded me there? I had no bookmark on the wormhole yet and, as i said, there where no stargates... Sitting there in a pod, i would have never found my way out of that system! Or am I wrong? However, i never felt quite this lonely and forlorn in New Eden before!
